Yes. I understand it's a complex issue and that sometimes seemingly contrary advise simply reflects a better and growing evidence base.

Now and again they get it wrong. But it's better than simply ignoring it just for a simple life...

I disagree. Has anyone ever lived a day longer by following the latest food advice as it happens? There's a really simple logic to food; eat slightly fewer calories than you burn. Once you're an adult it doesn't even really matter what. Most of your health risks will be down to your own genes anyway, so "general" food health advice is worthless.

Nah, I've just got no patience when people say dumb things, like "doesn't everyone ignore well-meaning scientific advice because it keeps changing?"

And it also fucks me off when people ignore others statements and keep accusing them of the same thing. I find people like that obnoxious little twerps and like to show them how dumb they're being...
Does your nose honk when you push it?

You are willing to blindly follow advice despite repeated evidence to the contrary (backwards and forwards, so on and so forth) Evidence obviously based on extremely narrow and flawed, yet accepted science. It used to be scientifically accepted that giving thalidomide to pregnant mothers was a sound, healthy scientific method. Woops.

I eat pretty much what I like at a sensible rate, I haven't died in years.

It's really easy to incorporate the latest scientific evidence into a diet like that. I don't see any difficulty at all.

If, in the long term, it adds twelve months to a life, or even if it simply adds a general feeling of wellbeing because at least you're making a cursory attempt to look after yourself, then it's win in my book. :)

No, I didn't say I'd follow anything blindly.

I was going to rejoin the conversation with you on a more resonable level because you made me laugh with the clown comment, but then you went and let your fat fingers type a load more brown that shows you simply don't get how the advice works (and seem to be stuck in the 1960's)...

All i'm going to say on the matter; quality of living over length of living.

Do what makes you feel better, be it mentally, healthwise, effort wise or other. There is no wrong way to live your life.

Ah, thanks for posting a link to part of the counter argument that was ignored by the greater scientific, medical and political community.

Not sure what you point is but carry on.

The thing with the salt advice is that there was never ANY evidence to back it up, the 4 major salt trials showed nothing, as the studies show the advice was plucked from the air based on a worry that increased salt must do something and small tribes with low salt intake had lower blood pressure, the same small tribe bullshit was used to link roughage with lower bowel cancer rates.

I think it's clear - if science is followed correctly then the advice given is usually sound.

Political and economic considerations are put before scientific considerations - but you shouldn't diss the science because of that...

You really are an obnoxious little twerp aren't you? :)

That's twice you have suggested someone isn't intelligent because they don't hold the same views as you.

Pretty low to be fair.

You need to sort yourself out mate.

Ive noticed this, and it isn't an entirely pleasant debating tactic.Always quite amusing to watch people use it then completely disappear up their own arses.

Neither's ignoring what people say and then repeatedly accusing them of things they've been explicitly denying for years.

But I'm glad it annoys you. You deserve it for employing your own shitty tactics for so long...

Hate to disappoint you Comrade, but it doesn't annoy me in the slightest. In fact I find it quite amusing, the same way I laughed at the Prius drivers in South Park.

Jesus, you're still a twat aren't you. I only un-ignored you because you post so much bullshit it made reading threads impossible. I think I'll just see if I can get adblock to draw a big penis over your posts.

OK.

There are easier ways to look at a load of penises though.

I recommend cycling weekly.

I think anyone who advises people things are good or bad for them probably has shares ( or not) in whatever it is!

Especially the NHS. Advising women not to take HRT for example has saved the government millions if not billions because women who should be taking it are old enough to get free prescriptions. My mother stopped taking it because of the scaremongering and went downhill rapidly.

I feel the same way about a lot of medication doctors tell you to take. Highly suspicious if you ask me.

As more is known about the body more research from previous times is debunked. They are even saying some animal fats are good for you now. And there are some research to show that colesterol might not be the evil it was made out to be.

No one has proven that any of this advice makes you live longer as you can't have someone live the same life twice with different food. You can make conjecture and hypothesis and what might happen.

But I am with Giles Coran. Where he stated that if it means nocking ten years off his life for a couple of burgers a week and another ten for drinking alcohol. Then that's a price he is willing to accept because otherwise life would be boring.

So I agree also with the Seel. Live how you want to as long as you enjoy it and don't let everyone else tell you what you should be doing.

Kinda how it's supposed to work. Should give you a warm glow of reassurance that it's working this way.

Unlike, say, the church, who's teachings on, for example, gay people and women priests, are only changing now that millions have left because they realise it's irrelevance.

When advice changes, it shows one thing - that people are working hard to make sure that it's the right advice. It will get more accurate over time - and we're at the beginning of a curve, not at the end of it.

Stay on the rollercoaster. It's a ride that'll flatten out...

I get that and totally agree.

However, my point is that you should take all advice, regardless of its source with a pinch of salt (hur hur) because it is in constant flux and pretty meaningless anyway unless you are spooning it in on a daily basis (which would be silly with any food type) you probably aren't doing yourself all that much harm.

Obviously there are exceptions to the rule but they are usually found in chemically altered shitfood that nobody should be eating anyway.

And a lot more people are working hard to take every penny from people who follow every shift in science.

The scientists may be working on correct advice, but the ones peddling the advice sure as f*ck are not. As long as the cash flows, it's all the same to them.

That's why you follow the scientific advice - not whoever's trying to sell you shit...

That works until you find out the people who are trying to sell you shit are finding the science, then it all gets a bit messy.....

I agree. There's loads of research projects funded by people with vested interests. That happen to get results that support their cause. Etc etc. especially with the Americans.

A lot of sh*tsellers claim "scientific advice" afterall.

Which is why the peer review process is in place and a body of evidence gets to be built up.

Choosing a lifestyle based on the results of a single study would be stupid - but abandoning science and all it has to offer because some people are doing their best to subvert it would be monumentally idiotic.

The science itself is fine, it's us humans that try to fuck it up - and that includes those of us who take pot shots at the *only* system we have that can possibly find truth.

In terms of lifestyle, there are very few legitimate sources of official advice. Your government should spell out the best scientific advice on diet and lifestyle.

If you're getting it off the web / newspapers / blogs / any other source then you're opening yourself to shysters.

Of course, as Mr Sagan said - one way to help protect yourself is to learn more about science...

But there's no agreement between governments. One will be five portions of fruit and veg another seven. Some less some more. So which government is right? Should you only listen to yours.
