Except, it doesn't because the 120bn excludes any tax or ni contributions that group made pre-1995.

It also doesn't include any costs or services used before 1995. In fact it doesn't look previous to 1995 at all. So this figure is likely to be higher.

No it isn't.
Dustman and Frattini say it is misleading to use the £118bn figure as the Telegraph and Mail have done. As they point out, this is based on the cost of all immigrants living in Britain between 1995 and 2011. This isn’t migrants who arrived in Britain in the late 1990s and 2000s but all the non-UK born people living in Britain at that time. More than 90% of them will have arrived in Britain long before 1995, including Britain’s large long-settled Asian and Caribbean communities who were born abroad.

The authors say that, for example, the calculation will include people who came to Britain in 1950 but only what they paid into the state and took out in benefits and public services after 1995.

The authors say this doesn’t tell us anything about how much these people have cost Britain in net terms because it ignores their contribution during the first 45 years of their residence.

“In fact, as they are now older, they are likely to have higher rates of welfare dependency and low labour force participation that does not reflect their overall contributions,” say the authors.

As 90% of these migrants will have been living in Britain for many years, possibly decades, before 1995, it is difficult to see how Labour’s immigration policy in government between 1997 and 2010 can be held responsible for them.

The authors say they have only reported these figures “for completeness” and such figures are “difficult to interpret” which is why they believe the discussion should focus on the positive contribution made by migrants who have arrived in Britain since 2000. It also tells us far more about what our attitude should be towards migrants now coming to Britain.

Kind of thing that would be legitimate grounds for asylum in 2014...
That's not asylum if they already have british passports to renounce they could come here as legal citizens.

Asylum is entering the UK illegally and declaring asylum once they get here. The other is moving legitimately and finding a place to live.

In my ideal world we should move all humans to a single continent and manage the others to provide food resources and to keep the rain forests etc.

Obviously would need small numbers of people to do the farming and all. But that way you wouldn't need so much land and it could be managed easier.

Never work tho lol.

I should really stop having two showers a day, but I'm addictive, it feels so good to be so fresh when going bed.

Sort of defeats the purpose of having the house at like 16 degrees -all- the time though. :p

Nonsense. They would have been "displaced persons". Just because a freak circumstance of British foreign policy gave them a get-out clause doesn't mean they weren't effectively refugees. And you don't have to arrive illegally to be able to claim asylum; you can walk into any British embassy in the world and do it. The fact that you've got a better chance to get leave to remain if you're already in Britain is one of the reasons why asylum seekers turn up first, but it doesn't mean that's a legal definition.

Not entirely correct. Don't believe the colonies had full British Passports that gave rights to live in Britain. If you remember what happened in Hong Kong for instance. The Passports they held as a British Colony Citizen did not give rights to live in Britain, they had to apply for that right before the handover.

there was a lot of controversy around that and the fact that they had to prove they would not be a burden on the UK by moving there. Given the attitude of some of the Chinese there I think the UK did the right thing. Flying back from Guangzhou one time and this Chinese Hong Kong guy sat next to me told his mate in the window seat the following joke.

How do you get rid of all the undesirables in Hong Kong
Blow up the Hong Kong Sevens

I then replied to him, you won't be telling that one when you want a bloody passport, I bet!

Example of the attitude a lot of them had. Wish I had a pound for every Guilo comment I heard there.

Cause it would require one over arching world power and religious harmony along with a lack of nationalism.

A bit like mega cities in 2000ad except the land around is viable and not a wasteland

Just a bit too far if you ask me..Pakistan is hardly on our best friends list and people are bound to question his true loyalties.
Anyway what I'm here about is that Asian guy from one direlection is the tenth most powerful asian in the UK...whatthelivinfuk.

But you said "it'd never work, lol". - but given those sets of conditions, it would.

Shouldn't be afraid to discuss the seemingly unlikely just because conditions on the ground now make them seem impossible. We'd never have gotten to space.

Far from "it'd never work" - I think it would definitely work, given different conditions. One of those conditions - one world government - is a bang-on certainty in the future, if we don't kill ourselves first.

Your second - religious harmony - may well be achieved as global educational levels are raised - because there's nothing like knowing actual facts to killing religious twattery...

Noticed @CorNokZ hastily facepalmed a perfectly reasonable "why" question :p

Told a friend they look nice today.
They asked ""What's wrong with how i look other days?"
Said "Most things."

Teaches her to take a f*cking compliment.

Neither did I. Not of the vasectomy you understand, but of Good Morning Britain. It's like a Sixth Form Media Studies project scripted by mumsnet, with Ben "I'm on everything don't you know" Shepherd, that vacous bint and Andi "Look how far I've fallen - if I wasn't anouncing the competitions I'd be on QVC by now" Peters.

I'd have less rage around the program admittedly, if I wasn't forced the watch the utter bilge every morning whilst the OH gets ready for work.

So Germany and France are due refunds and the UK have to cover the refunds & more?

O'rly?

Tell me moar.

I don't understand why they'd do this, they know the UK wants out, and I thought they would've wanted the UK to stay, but clearly not.

What do you expect from an unelected body which hasn't had it's accounts audited in 10 years? I honestly don't think we need to worry about leaving the EU, give it a couple of years and a referendum in Catalonia, the entire lot will come crashing down after the Germans have decided they've had enough of paying for the rest of the basket cases in Europe (I think the UK have reached that point).

Because out economy performed better than expected and France and Germany didn't, so we have to pay more than what we did. Its what we agreed to and as a member of the EU should pay. Regardless of whether we should remain in the EU or not, we agreed to it months/years ago.

That's silly, I'm game for being a part of the trading bloc, but we're not a part of their currency, I don't see why we should pay more because our economy is improving, seems a bit daft.

Its much like tax on profits for a business, the more profit they make the more tax they pay.

The thing that pisses me off the.most is the way Merkel seems to.be the unofficial spokesman for the EU..it's like we need her blessing
