My first car was a Fiat Cinquecento Sporting, in red with matching seatbelts, and one of those Kenwood MASK stereos that appeared as if from nowhere. I cared as much then as I do now what people thought of me, and I'm glad I didn't, as that car was an absolute riot. Weighed about 30g, had a thrashy little engine that demanded you give it absolute death, and sticky tyres that means braking for corners was entirely optional. I loved that thing, 4 years and 65k miles later I traded it for a Golf GTI, which was nowhere near as much fun. Only way I've been able to beat it fun wise was in my old BMW 328i, but that was a different sort of fun, and the higher speeds meant it could go from fun to scary very quickly, especially on Chinese tyres....

Funny story about the Cinque, we had to ask the garage we were trading it in to if they could jump start it off the forecourt for us, as that morning the battery had decided to die. Felt a bit sheepish after he'd given me 2 grand for it.....

Oh and I managed to have sex in it. Wasn't especially comfortable, but it worked. And then I reversed into a lamp post I couldn't see as the rear window was still steamed up. Oops.

I had sex with a 16 year old in the passenger seat of my Fiesta 1.1 in an industrial park. I think shagging in your first car is a right of passage.

I had to wipe cum off the seat with my Halfords demister sponge.

Same with my escort. And was. 16 year old too. Hehe. Cars were good for getting knickers down. Lol. Not the most comfortable of places tho. Didn't matter when you were living at home tho. Was in a car park of some lakes in Welwyn garden city.

My nan recently got a new hip, so we have her car atm. Drove for the first time without an instructor today, gf and son in the backseat, and i was awesome! Parallel parked, freeway with 110km/h and only stalled once, but it was uphill at a signal in a car I've never driven before (Hyundai i20 lime green). I liked my instructor's Golf 7 a whole lot more. Will try to convince gf to have sex in the backseat*, if that is the custom?

*Son will NOT be present

A bit daft but in the real world both are used. Kids should learn how to use both.

...and pounds and ounces in various cookery books. Feet and inches in various construction projects, if you are working on old buildings with old drawings etc. Most end up needing converting one way or another. Importing goods from the US too, you need to understand imperial measurements (although they are a little different)

While I agree metric is so much easier, in reality you need to learn both.

Increasingly, all those things you describe are edge cases. Cookery books will be metric because food is metric. Old buildings aren't exactly a major issue and the Polish lads doing the work grew up with metric anyway!

As for the US thing, Imperial probably creates MORE confusion, not less, when for example, people talking about gallons are referring to different things!

Let the septics sit in their weird little world that consists of them and Myanmar. We don't need to slide back into that.

dont the US and UK non-metric stuff have different measurements?

wasnt that the whole point of the metric system in the first place? :p

(see the Vasa ship story of why its good for everyone to use same measurements ;) )

mmm, mmm. But that still isn't the real world, is it?

You still need to be able to work with both, or at least be able to convert. Probably around half of my cook books are in imperial, I generally convert to metric but quite happily work with either.

As for buildings. A lot of original drawings for sites are in imperial, there is no getting away from that, unless you want to completely resurvey from the bottom up.

When you are buying your meat from the butcher and you happen to be buying steak, do you ask for for 340g of steak? No, because that would be dumb.

In short, for the time being it is beneficial to understand both.

Just signed up for the student 6 months prime on Amazon, if i cancel the subscription now, does it still work for the next 6 months or do they cancel it now? - I know it works differently with different firms.

Of course, and very simple. But Cameron wants to teach imperial as a priority and metric as a second.

He's a cunt.
