It is different enough that there is no need to reference Sherlock Holmes. I watched the first one then ignored the rest. If I want to watch a hyper observant detective I will continue to watch Psych which is multitudes better than Elementary.

There's also one thing to consider, which might be a bit odd to British folk; american TV is much lighter and easier to watch.

No doubt that British TV is good(in some cases superior), but also if you want a series that you can munch some dinner with, you tend to go american just because it doesn't require as much concentration on it, just on the language alone.

As such, this is a perfectly fine adaptation of sherlock holmes in modern days. It's entertaining, but not overly heavy.

But yes, i do agree that it would work without the sherlock mythos, but it also gives it a bit more interest. The lead character seems sherlocky enough atleast.

And that's where I'd disagree with you; making him sound like he just left the set of Downton Abbey isn't making him "Sherlocky" (in fact I'm doing a huge disservice to Downton Abbey, which has far less hammy dialogue), its just pandering to American ideas that we all still wear bowler hats. His behaviour is "Sherlock Holmes lite", which actually completely misses the point of Sherlock Holmes in the first place.

I didn't mean the way he talks, but the way the character is portrayed. But horses for courses, as i said it's lite TV anyway ;)

Finally started watching The Thick of It and demolished it all in days. It's wonderful.

Giving Veep a go. Pretty much the same thing but not as delicate, or as well delivered.

Have you watched ALL Thick of It episodes - all 4 series?

Its one of the finest things the BBC have ever put on the TV. Peter Capaldi's simply brilliant. And I love Phil, Will Smith's character. The interplay with him & Ollie is rib-splitting funny ("You're like the man who fucked the monkey and gave us Aids").

I have only recently watched it too, excellent stuff. I even found the specials and watched them.

The one when they are on the retreat is fantastic.

I think S4 suffers a little from having the opposition in charge, some of the characters aren't anywhere near as strong/funny. Mannion is fucking amazing though. The inquiry episode is fantastic.

I like the way Ollie silently raises to be in charge of everything.

Rebecca Front delivers such a toe-cringingly embarassing performance at the Guardian offices ("mass de-carcinogenocide")

Loved the Conference episode when Glen gets punched by Malcolm
Ollie's three words: "Sour, grumpy, and uptight".
The special episode when Manion pretends to lock Stuart in the bathroom and he goes nuts

Could go on about it all day.

Anyone see tonight's Masterchef?

You want to see the Sea Urchin skills test ... its a very expensive ingredient and they completely butchered it. The expressions on Monica's face while they attempt to prepare it

Me too. Did anyone else watch the last ever episode of CSI Miami? What a total damp squib!

Can't stand Dara O'Brian, Mock would be much improved without him.

Count me as the second - I dont dislike him I just find him terribly bland like daytime tv.
