VALVE AND VIVENDI have settled their lawsuit, and it looks like Valve, or at least Steam is the big winner. This one will have huge industry implications, mainly because Valve just said it doesn't need any publishers anymore. The part about Vivendi not distributing boxed Valve titles in a few months is the death knell of the entire software distribution network. Keep an eye on this boys and girls, Valve is signalling the future.

This is history in the making. µ

Hopefully with the publishers out of the picture it means that we should get better quality games for our money, or at the very least the people who work in the games industry start to earn acceptable wages.

What a load of simplistic bollocks.

Now that cost Valve a few $$$s.

Vivendi walk away giving up the rights to everything? Sure as expected they waited long enough that the vast majority of retail HL2 sales are in the past, but they didnt just give up future royalties without a large payoff.

It seems details of the settlement havent been released/leaked so far, yet folks are considering it some sort of victory for Valve. Without knowing just how much they paid - and its bound to be plenty - thats a huge assumption.

Agreed.

The retail sales of HL2 weren't great, this was down to so many people getting the game via steam...whether paying for it or using the ATI vouchers.
