ie Gandalf vs the necromancer

Gandalf v Sauron seems like it would be a short fight...

He had Galadriel, Saruman, Elrond and the rest of the White Council helping though.

I read somewhere that the 3rd movie is going to bridge the gap between The Hobbit and LOTR? Is that what the similaritarionismion(sp?) is about? Never read it.

The Silmarillion is an extreme prequal that covers from the creation of middle earth to the end of the wars against Melkor (for whom Sauron was just a servant).

Not a lot happened between the hobbit and lotr - most characters in lotr were born and Sauron rebuilt Barad-dur and Gondor gradually retreated.

Official: The Hobbit to Become Three Films!

Shame. The bits that Jackson added into LOTR were far and away the weakest bits of the movie.

It won't be The Hobbit any more. It'll be something very different. Which is a crying shame. :(

I tried to read The Silmarillion once. Utter toss.

I read it twice. One of the most amazing pieces of literature I've ever had the pleasure to set my eyes on.

Very hard going tho - until you get your eye in with the language Tolkein used.

The Silmarillion is not for everyone. You have to be a bit of a Tolkien enthusiast. Not the easiest book to read, a lot of names and places, and the story isn't always linear, but I actually prefer it to LoTR. It puts into context all the themes from LoTR.

3 films for a book shorter than any of the 6 lotr books screams cash cow. It better be fucking worth it. Making the fans that have been waiting years already wait even longer.

(The films are long because Jackson is a shit director and can't tell a story properly)

It's not suspicion, it's annoyance that they are trying to milk so much money out of a relatively short story. They will ruin the story by splitting it. I'll boycott it and download it in protest.

Well, have to see if it's milking or if it warrants three movies. I don't care either way as i'm not exactly a fan of the stuff, so three movies might actually be better, IF there's enough stuff(not fluff) to fill the time.

I thought this was a bad idea until I heard they were adding in a lot more of the appendices.

Sounds good to me so long as they pull it off :)

This basically - Elves in Helms Deep <shudder> - the whole point of that section of the book was to show that Aragorn could re-unite the ragtag army of humans into a force that could resist Sauron - having the Elves turn up like the cavalry absolutely ruins it.

What Horrors will he perpetrate on the Hobbit - I cant wait for the re-make of the LOTR tbh.

Thats right. God came down from heaven and stopped the mutherfucking bullets.
Lighten up, Moses.
Don't blow this shit off, Abraham. What happened was a miracle and I want you to acknowledge the fact.
What?
What ain't no country I ever heard of. Say what again. Say what again one more goddam time
All Im saying is you got me in a red zone, Moses.
Oh, you in the red zone, Abraham? Well I'm a mushroom cloud-laying mutherfucker, motherfucker. I will never forgive your ass for this shit. In fact what the hell am I doing back here? We're switchin' places. You're cleaning up this Egyptian's skull.

It is not very well put together. Try "The Book of Lost Tales". Even more complex read. Needs an extensive knowledge of the lore to piece everything together and understand it. I gave it a go when i was 14 or so.

I think many people are missing the fact that the "hobbit" films were never going to be JUST the hobbit. They have always been planned to include some of the back story of middle earth and the ring.

I remember reading long ago about plans to include some of the silmarillion, the necromancer thread and coverage of all the main characters "offscreen" adventures.

Best book by far, shouldn't be surprised to see you make an absurd claim. You were probably put off by all the long words. In Raven's world a vanguard is a crook lock for his white van.

In other news I'm not very impressed with the choice to make three films of the Hobbit, seems to be nothing but a moneyspinning exercise.

Once again... They ate not making three films from the hobbit. They are making three Lotr films in which the "hobbit" story is part of.

It started as one film - there may have been lots of ideas floating around but there always are.

Its not true that this was planned from the start - its a dragged out cash in.

Think of all the £90 box sets they'll sell. It's 100% about the money. They'd never sell the ancillary stories on their own.

I downloaded the hobbit audiobook the other day for some background noise, its 10 hours long. If you can read the book aloud in 10 hours, it does not need 9 hours of film, even with filler from other stories.
