If memory serves me right, in the "current" edition of the book they play the riddle game - if Bilbo loses, tough, if he wins then Gollum shows him the way out of the caves.

I can't help but think the casting Martin Freeman spoils it

I don't know. I think he could be really good. Better than Mr Wood as Frodo Big Eyes...

How's filming going Jup?

Really?

If so, then...

what?

he finds the ring
he meets gollum
they play a riddle game as Bilbo has a sword so Gollum cant eat him but hopes to lure him into goblins.
they both answer 2 riddles, bilbo cant think of a 3rd and puts his hands in his pockets while thinking and says "what have I got in my pocket" out loud by accident when he remembers the ring. Gollum throws a spaz and accusing him of cheating, but bilbo sticks to this as his 3rd riddle and Gollum loses.

Think ive read about 3 editions of the book (first one in about 1979) and its never changed so not sure what the "current" edition different to other editions malarkey is.

I meant that in the first edition Gollum knowingly gambles the ring, in the revised editions he does not.

I'm fairly sure he knowingly gambles it in the version I've got. Arrived at my mums today for christmas and in sure the book is here somewhere so I'll look it up tomorrow if I can find it.

Have read a few versions and in every one I've read Gollum DOES NOT know Frodo has the ring, and it goes the way Shagrat wrote. He goes out to his island to try and find it after he loses the riddle game which is when he realises its lost and Bilbo first puts it on.

It had to be re-written that way, else the entire story of the ring would make no sense.

Thread isn't about the book though and not all have read the book.

It's like telling spoilers about watchmen, sure there's a comic of it that's been out for ages, but there's a lot of folk who haven't read it.

Your effort of putting spoilertags against spoiling a movie will always result in your loss.

I thought you were leaving as you were scared of spoilers?

BTW BILBO WINS!

What's the bet , half way through they rewrite it with a part for Shia LaBeouf as Bilbo's funny sidekick.

Nothing major has been given away Tohtori- you know pretty much what happens from LOTR anyway. You should read the book though :p

edit- It's a two part film :( Hopefully the wait between movies won't be too unbearable!

It's one of those books that everyone should have read at some point in their life. More so than lord of the rings.

I don't think there is a need for spoilers really.

Yeah, got a bit angary at it since i really hate spoilers, or lack there of tags, even if people think it's a minor thing, to some it might not be.

Anyhoo, yeah, should probably get to it after the metric shit-ton of other books i need to read :p

Raven, that's simply taste. To me these movies are, well, interesting to watch the story as i've never been that interested in the books. Can't really have "you must read/see" things in life ;)

Sorry Toht...like others I just assumed the content of the story was common knowledge!

The fact that its a 2 parter explains the lack of Smaug and certain other elements in the trailer ;)

To be fair - they need more beard, more ginger, less sword and MORE AXE :)

Thorin is far too young looking, too clean cut & fashionable.

Kili looks like the stunted half-brother of Aragorn.

But I suppose they have to eye-candy the movie. /Sigh

Balin & Gloin are the only two who even remotely resemble the "classic dwarf" that I imagine

OT: Shame Peter Jackson didn't include Fog on the Barrow Downs / Tom Bombadil in the LOTR movie. I guess die hard JRRT fans will never be happy unless they're personally involved in the direction/production

Would have made sense to have John Rhys-Davis playing Gloin though.

And yes, not enough beard and axe.

Is it sad that I've just noticed from the above pick that Dwalin, slightly ironically, is from Red Dwarf? :)
