Benedict Cumberbatch is playing Smaug, I'm really interested to see how he does it.

I've seen a live version of the Hobbit some years ago, it was ace. Smaug was played as a very sinister well spoken English posh nob, it worked very well.
I hope it works out, really I do </grumpy fucker>

Listened to the unabridged LoTR audio on YouTube. Well, the first chapter anyway. Was a little disappointed TBH. Zero acting, and the narrator's character voices all sound the same.

Nothing compares to the 13-part BBC radio production. Michael Hordern had (and still has) the best Gandalf voice ever IMO.

Yeh I've got that. Michael Hordern is ace. Yeh, I know he's been planted years ago. He's still ace.

That had me nervous...but then I watched the trailer again, and the dwarves started their chant and I got so worked up again that I don't care.

So what are the jarring differences between 48 and 24?

Watched the trailer. Looked normal to my very untrained eye.

The trailer might not be the same?

The way I'm thinking it might be is....well can you remember the first time you watched something that wasn't a sport or a documentary in HD?

It just makes everything seems so different.

The difference is akin to that between 25fps film and 50 fields (or 25 half-frames) per second television.

Think how 16mm film looks (The Shield, for instance), compared to The Bill

fwiw I'm burning to see what 48 will look like. I have very sensitive eyes, and can see the flickering on the screen in cinemas, even though they bump up the frame rate by showing each image three times.

Meh. All I know is that I've got 2 films to look forward to this year: Hobbit & the Alien one (name escapes me)

You're burning but it's nothing to do with wanting. Skank.

How would you properly display 48fps on a TV at the moment?
From my limited knowledge you would need a TV that can display at 240hz, which is fine for US TV's as they do 60/120/240/etc hz, but here in euro land it's 50/100/200/etc...
Can't they just make a proper standard so us euro's don't need tv trickery pull-down so we don't get judder etc

You don't. 24fps films are shown on television at 25fps, which is why running times are always shorter.

One commentator described it quite well, but only us oldies will remember I Claudius, it was shown using old skool live tv cameras and had a weird, high contrast look to it, he said it was like watching a HD version of those broadcasts and I can picture that very well.
Surely someone somewhere can tweak the settiings.

Totally ripping off LoTR, they've even got a Gandalf. Is it a prequel or something?

thread tl;dr

Run the entire film through an Instagram filter to make it look more fake.

IMO it should have been a single 3 or 4 hour movie. Its not as epic as LOTR. Its a children's book. Bilbo meets the dwarves, Trolls, Goblins & Gollum, Elves, Mirkwood, Beorn, Dale, Smaug, Battle of the Five Armies. Don't need 3 movies for that.

The rumour seems to be they're adding stuff from the LOTR appendices - ie Gandalf vs the necromancer
