Err United have had a 50-50 hit rate? Has Berbatov not won a couple of league titles in which he played an important part as well as a handful of minor trophies and reaching a couple of CL finals that netted us about £100 million in revenue alone. Your classification of fail is obviously a bit off.

Anyway this is all irrelevant when you look at Downing for £20m, that trumps any 'fail' no matter the magnitude.

Yes, but I wouldn't go so far as to call Berbatov an unqualified success either. I don't blame him for that by the way, I think he's fallen victim to other factors that mean his face doesn't fit at United anymore, rather than his qualities as a player.

Without his contribution we don't win those two titles or make either of the CL finals. He is one man out of eleven and his contribution brought in enough revenue to more than cover his transfer fee.

Hmm, I'd say Berbatov is a bit more complex than a "fail" (more a change of system) and he has been top scorer at United. United have had far more clear cut failures on their books than Berbatov. Its also too early to write Torres at Chelsea off.

Berba's never going to win you the league - which is what he was bought for. He has games where he scores 5 goals then does fuck all for ages. I think his contribution is minimal - he flatters to decieve. Welbeck has more of an effect for you :)

Also, if it's too early to write Torres off, it's too early to write Carroll off...

Nah. He made up the numbers.

Example:

Man United need to win the last game of the season to win the league. You're 0-0 in the 85th minute of the game.

Dimitar Berbatov, who has not scored all season, comes on and scores a goal. United win the game 1-0 and take the league.

Dimitar Berbatov has not "won you the league". Your other players won you the league. If Berbatov hadn't been there for the rest of the season and you had another striker, one who could score 1 in 2 rather than go ten games wtihout scoring and then score 5, then perhaps you'd have won the league three games ago.

Berbatov holds you back - because he's not good enough for United.

United have been the best team in the country for the past twenty years. Dimitar Berbatov is not fit to wear the shirt, IMO.

Wasn't Berba the top scorer in the premier league for one of the seasons? Deluded Liverpool 'logic' on a new level!

Bullshit, he scored plenty of match winning goals, those points put us over the line on both league title winning seasons. No idea why I am arguing with a Liverpool fan about it though, not going to get an unbiased opinion from you but quite the contrary, you will imply that we have spunked money up the wall with him and yet the actual will numbers state something very different. If a player makes a significant contribution in two title winning seasons then he has to be considered a solid buy if not a total success. Failure is not on the agenda though, sorry.

didn't he score a hatrick against liverpool in a 3-2 win? I'm asking the question, I of course know the answer..... Berba did alright at united, didn't set the world on fire but scored goals which is his job, he was by no means a flop. Only critisism of him is that when things don't go his way his head drops then he puts no effort in.

So like Torres Carroll scored a goal in the CL final that netted his club a lot of prestige, cash and next years CL spot to balance his failed PL season?...

No. But one goal, in any match, does not make a success.

If, for example, Chelski had had Aguero there's a fairly good chance that they wouldn't have needed to win the CL to clinch that last spot. They spent 50 million on Torres for 20+ league goals to ensure they were challenging for the title. He failed abysmally.

Not like the club help themselves, let's not forget the time Torres got sent off and it was announced at half time at Anfield. Not hard to see why non-Liverpool fans dislike the club. ;)

Anyway, in all seriousness, all clubs make bad buys. I think Caroll's performances at the back end of last season show he can offer something to the team, it's just a shame that he clearly doesn't fit with Rodgers' vision for the team - therefore I think he'd be better off leaving. He'd probably do well back at Newcastle or at a club such as, say, Spurs.

When Torres got sent off for Chelsea against Swansea, it was announced on the PA at half time at Anfield.

I think he's an exciting player - he's not at full confidence yet but could be a real gem to a side that stuck by him.

Funneh tbfh. If that bit of banter doesn't make you smile then you've no sense of humour.

They often call out different results and points of interest at half time - and Torres being sent off is undeniably a point of interest. Stop being such a cry-baby tbfh :)

It's pathetic, nothing to be upset about, just disappointing as is consistently the case with LFC.

Calling out results and points of interest is pathetic?

Is it pathetic when MOTD points out that Torres got sent off? Stop being so touchy-feely. Results get called out at half time at lots of clubs. You're just pissed off that the announcment that Torres got sent off drew lots of laughs from the Scousers.

And why shouldn't they? Torres put a gun to LFC's head in a January transfer window and left for Chelski - he had a horrid, horrid season. I find that funny - just the same way that when other big-name players defect from other big clubs and do poorly their fans find it funny.

Nothing liverpool specific about that. You're just a touchy chelski fan ;)

I know it's ridiculous to even compare the three players based on stats given their positions, but still. :p

Then you won't be upset when people continually bash your mid-table club all season. As ever, like with the Suarez case and the recent John Terry case, you ritually ignore anything but what suits your view of something to make a 'point'. You're terminally blinkered, must be an inherent part of supporting Liverpool. If it was normal for sendings off to be announced at half-time (it's not - if you ever went to games you'd know this), then the BBC wouldn't have highlighted the fact that it happened that day on their match day text feed thing on the website.
