well I hear you there. tbh I was the friggin god of Tamriel until I installed the smarter combat ai mod. it was awesome to see enemies dodge my arrows and flank around me though, even if I did end up dead much more often pfff

Right NMM is annoying me in that it seems really flaky. But that's not my issue... I really can't be arsed spending 15 hours downloading and installing a million mods. So, what are the essentials? I'm looking for upscaled textures, better weather, better lighting and maybe some NPC visual enhancements. Not too worried about pointless shite like "detailed rugs" and "better wax on candles" etc.

most of what has been listed is "essential" either do it properly, or dont bother ;)

Probably a year since I last played Skyrim but this thread made me restart a new character and try out some of those mods as well. Haven't tried that ENB .dll stuff yet, that looks painful to install & configure, but the enhanced textures and the like make it look better already.

I forgot how much fun this game could be. I just killed a dragon and it landed in a house and the whole town came to look. Knowing Bethesda both events were probably bugs :)

Thing about modding is that there is no essentials :p

You pick&choose exactly how you want your game to be, quite the point of modding.

If you can't be arsed to find out what you want and then do the install, well, beggers and choosers eh ;)

@Zarjazz heh yeah, BEST events in Skyrim(etc) are bugs :D

It starts with better textures and lighting, then it's the GUI, some improved AI, maybe a horse mod, then before you know it you're logging in one day with giant chickens tormenting Skyrim and NPCs with mammoth dicks.

The default Skyrim HD pack is a good start, if you have it on Steam it will be listed under DLC, if not have a look at the Skyrim site. A lot of the mods use variations of this mod as far as I can tell.

Then look at the top downloaded/endorsed mods on the Skyrim Nexus

Thanks guys. Appreciate the pointers.

@old.Tohtori - it's not that I can't be arsed it's just that I want some basic visual improvements and that's it! - and I was hoping for some recommendation from people who have tested them. I really just don't have the time to test mods. I want to play the game and have fun. I understand your point but I'm really looking for opinions on where to start and maybe not about how I'm lazy :)

It can be quiet overwhelming when you want to combine a lot of mods, compatibility issues and such. Installing small mods in mod-manager and fucking around. Hate that.

As posted earlier in this thread I just installed most, but not all, from the Recommended Mods from the ENB page - http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/30936/? as they cover all the texture and mesh improvements you'd want with no "fucking around"

After that I just installed several mods off the Top list. The SkyUI one is amazingly useful and the unofficial patches to fix loads of outstanding quest bugs are useful too. After that it's up to personal preference to modify character models, extra armour & weapon sets and so on.

Going in that order I haven't had a single compatibility or crash yet.

Installed those recommended and some other visual enhancements - weather, lighting, HD textures, countryside shit, NPC (aesthetics) and the game looks fucking awesome now. Still getting a solid 60fps without any drops (I obviously have vsync enabled so I don't know how high it could go).

Cheers dudes :)

edit - although I'm now starting to see all those flaws which I want to fix like drawdistance, footprints and crappy looking snow. Will play for a while and change some more stuff.

Yeah took your advice with the beautiful eye mod and some others that people have recommended - dance of death, cloaks etc.

Fuck sake, so much for not having 15 hours to waste :)

I spent some time trying to add ENB to my pre modded Skyrim. NO dice died every time on launch.

Wiped my install as it was not recoverable, installed form scratch, still crashes when i try and load a new game. This is the same problem i encountered the last few time si've tried to install it, just seems super touchy about 'something' gives the game window menu then as soon as it tries to load 3D, barp dead.

:(
