but Salmond seems to think renewables will make up for the decline of oil revenue, but that's a load of bollocks.

Absolutely - renewables only work with fat subsidies - they aren't actually making any profits for the country.

I like the Scottish and would hate to see them go but part of me wants them to get independence just so fatso has to come begging to be let back in, in 10 years.

Depends how you account for the oil. And since Shetland and Orkney (thanks G) could claim some of that, then the books look pretty shaky. Without the oil, definitely an inflow of money from England, but Salmond seems to think renewables will make up for the decline of oil revenue, but that's a load of bollocks.
You cant really ship renewables south, it's not very efficient to send power that far over the grid, so there's no credible export market for their energy. A cunning move might be to open some fucking massive alu or steel plants and run them on dirt cheap power to get an edge over rivals.

Then why are there plans to link the UK to Norway so we can store excess energy in the fjords?

Please don't wish for this :(, there are more than half of us that don't want his utter nationalistic and borderline racist bullshit.

What makes me laugh most about his fuckwittery, are the bilingual signs in Edinburgh and Glasgow - for fucking what reason? Gaelic is an old, defunct, backwards, in decline and obsolete language. What's the point in having signs this far "south" for a language not even spoken here with less than half of highlanders speaking it? What a fat cunt.

Put Salmond and Brown up against the wall, shoot the fat useless ugly fuckers. One sold us all down the river and the other is now planning to do the same. Independence suits none of us and I would hate to lose Scotland as part of the Union, most English people would hate it as well, I just wish that someone in the Scotiish media was putting that point across heavily because from what I read and see on TV when I am up in Edinburgh or Fife that is not the case.

You mean Northconnect? Its not really about storing, its an energy arbitrage system, the idea being to get over one of the big problems of renewables (lack of decent energy storage) by sending the energy you do create to areas that need it and getting energy from other areas when the wind (or whatever) in your area isn't blowing. Its not an export market though; not really, its more about creating a massive internal market to gain efficiencies. For Scotland and Norway its the hope that their low local demand means they can gain a profit from their excess, but the economics of it are pretty shaky; its still going to rely on subsidies for many decades to come (the Scotland-Norway interconnect alone costs nearly 2bn, not including the power generation itself). Oh, and it would account for about 0.01% of UK electricity needs.

The only cheap power is hydro-electric and they already exploit them for aluminium - its cheaper to ship in gas and burn that than rely on wind.

That's not what my post is about.

If pixar did a film about Liverpool where cars were nicked and everyone said "cyalm down", then ..... Oh wait.

You know what I'm getting at though.

Yeah, and I want Hollywood to stop portraying English people in 75% of their films as being posh stuck up tea-drinking crumpet eating twats.

Oh wait, I don't give a fuck.

Hollywood is not the same as splitting up a country. Salmond's Braveheart agenda has been bad enough without this.

Edit: just noticed my ignores have reset themselves, I can see your and toht's posts. Need to rectify that.

Your point was saying that it's a film full of stereotypes, rather than 'splitting a country up' as if this film is gonna piss masses of people off, maybe he will just watch the film and enjoy it for what it is, rather than getting upset about stereotypes, I mean, it's a film based on Scotland, would you rather a bunch of average people walking around looking average, sounding average, or why don't you take the fact that you have these stereotypes as a positive thing? To be fair, the only stereotype I see that can cause any negativity is the ginger character, but not ALL the characters seem to be ginger - as for the war-paint, it's a good thing, because it's that war paint that signifies Scotlands resistance towards England (Braveheart) It's a bit like Scandinavia people getting pissed off that the Vikings are stereotyped as wearing horned-helmets, because they actually didn't.

Clearly, you only want people to agree with your PoV, hence why you're ignoring me again - See you soon :) xx

I hate to disagree, but it looks like a good film in the typical format of the Pixar brand, though it could just be Train your Dragon with kilts, he is right to jump on it's publicity, they've been selling this version of Scotland for years and there is even a lot of truth in the myths. The scenery looks gorgeous and it is in real life.
Scottish tourism will do very well off this movie

And that's why Alex is jumping on the bandwagon and riding it for all it's worth.
If it increases tourism in Scotland, it's a good thing.
Put it another way, Scotland has many cultural things going for it. Wales has some, but nowhere near as much as Scotland.

I love visiting my folks in Scotland. It's far enough away to make a special journey, yet close enough to come home if I want to.

But would it increase the tourism? from what I can see it won't. More US tourists well most of them do all the islands (including Ireland) From Europe well doubtfull as there are locations that do the same but at a better level, from what I know (little maybe but just as much as an average European)
Edinburgh well nice historical town but then there is Prague or a dozen other ones.
Glasgow? err only thing pops in my mind is industrial town
The hills/mountains water etc well Norway?
Anything else well there is always Ireland.
A movie wont really convince people to come over, much better is to reach out to the decendants of former Scots and try to lure them over, or people with some links. Same as the Irish did, more effective and cheaper ;)

I hope they do vote for independence - the tax relief down here would be nice and they'd have to take a share of the deficit.

Also the comedic relief in a few years after the SNP runs scotland into the ground would be hilarious.

I dont think so - we are linked to them come what may - if it all went wrong we would have to help sort it out.

Give Scotland complete independence, if they fuck it up and want back in, give them really harsh terms, like we're a Conservative Empire again.

Because as said before, if they fuck up, we will be the ones to help us, therefore we're the suckers.

Is there any source of info of what happens to English/Welsh/N.I people who live in Scotland but are not Scottish citizens if they go independent?

Many of my Uni friends (and me) are wondering if we will get kicked out after they graduate. Not to mention all the people who live and work in Scotland but are not Scottish citizens.

I doubt it, surely if you're qualified, they'll be more likely to want to hold on to you to make them more money, it's more likely peoples will get a choice to stay, or to go, but then again, it's like a European in any European Country I guess?

i imagine it would work in a similar way as the irish in the UK at the moment, pretty much the same as a british person (Irish citizens can still vote in general elections if they live in the UK, EU citizens cant o_O)

not sure how it would work in Scotland though, but it would make sense to start like that and then once EU membership/schengen/whatevz is setup phase it out

I know what you guys are saying, a tourism boost is welcome.

Boosting tourism is not Salmond's endgame, it's about splitting up the union for his own megalomania.

I believe if you're resident in Scotland at the time of the vote (or x months before it I'd guess), irrespective of your state of birth, you get to vote. As for after independence, the assumption is Scotland will be part of the EU (not necessarily a correct assumption, but there you go), so no-one will be getting "kicked out". Eventually Scotland would have to decide its own immigration policy for non-EU citizens, but initially it would probably follow the current status quo.

I would imagine if you weren't born in Scotland but wanted to become a Scottish citizen, there would probably be an initial offer to "naturalise" if you're already resident, then new residents it would be five years residency like it is in Ireland. I'd also imagine a fuckload of people having "UK" and Scottish passports.

I have read legal opinions that the approach Salmond wants to take with no votes for Scottish citizens who aren't currently living in scotland is inherently illegal and that the definition of who is legally a citizen is enshrined in International law so that should be interesting.

Basically a vote that contravenes that could be overturned in the courts - Salmond is trying to exclude that section of the electorate because he (probably correctly) fears they will vote against him.
