This tickled me ...any truth in it?

Scotland has not been a manufacturing country for a long time. At least not without massive English subsidies. Nor are they remotely thrifty. When the Scottish Churches collapsed so did the values that went with them. Scots are now mainly on the dole, one way or other, drunk, on drugs or in prison. There are vast areas of urban Scotland where there is literally nothing else for men in particular.

If Scotland joined the Eurozone their problems would be worse. At least being in Britain means that they have some exchange rate flexibility. Having the economy of, say, Slovakia, with the drinking problems of Russia, the spending discipline of Greece and the politics of Italy is not a recipe for success when combined with the exchange rate of Germany.

Scaremongering from the torygraph tbfh.

All the more reason for them to vote yes and attempt to fix it themselves by hook or crook tbfh.

Ah, the old "its negative so it must be scaremongering" line. Or as I prefer it, the "la la la, I'm not listening" line.

As for the second part, well, I'm sure if everyone in Scotland clicks their heels together and says "there's no place like home" it'll all work out fine.

Obviously. I stopped reading when I reached "dole" considering Scotland has an unemployment rate better than the UK average and only bettered by the south of England.

That's because the Southerners even see me as a Scot, I think alot of them believe everywhere north of them will become independent. :p

Well it's getting ugly.

My missus is a teacher and telling me today that a couple of the kids (8 years old) get a taxi to and from school, one of which was wearing a Yes badge this afternoon. The taxi driver refused to take the child with a Yes badge and eventually the taxi was cancelled / replaced.

Firstly, getting your kids to wearing badges supporting a political movement? Really? Secondly, a grown man (supporting No) refusing to take a child in his taxi?

What a sad day.

I'd be checking the terms of his licence to see if he's allowed to do that. And if not, I'd be making a stern phone call to the licensing department in the council. Yes, it's one-foot-in-the-grave style, but I derive a certain amount of satisfaction in knowing that twats like him aren't allowed to get away with shit like that.

So the three leaders have had a last minute attempt to appeal to voters by pledging a protection of the block grant and more powers:

... but then Louise Mensch tweeted this. You can see why voters are cynical about getting anything by voting No.

Nothing has been signed or voted on in parliament so they could easily withdraw this stuff if they see a chance to score political points (a politician not being honest what's next? :) )

Frankly, I sort of agree with her, the deal is, you either try something radical and have a huge change, or you don't, that's what you should be voting for, we shouldn't be rolling over for Scotland and tempting you guys to stay, that's just daft.

If Westminster said, ah okay, we hear your referendum, so Scotland, Northern Ireland and 'North England' we'll think about giving you all more powers instead of just the people that are bothered about doing something about it, it'd be better (for both of us, because it seems they're just saying that to secure the votes.)

This may seem really selfish and it could make people vote Yes instead, but Scotland voting No for the purpose of further devolution -does- effect England, so why shouldn't we have a say?

You're absolutely right, so I don't see how / why they're promising all this new free shit without England having a say (which they'll say no to, let's be honest) especially considering Gordon Brown, Nick Clegg and David Cameron won't be here.

Even if its a no vote Scotland is now in the driving seat...England has had to show its hand and it would appear we cant live without Scotland...either way Alex will be writing up a wish list as long as Loch Ness.

Every Scot I've spoken to in Dubai says it will be a yes vote, going to be very tight.

Haha, I spoke to a bunch of Scots that live in England for long periods of time, due to work, and they were all passionate William Wallace nationalists, yet they couldn't vote, they were convinced that Scotland would get independence too, but I'm not convinced to be honest, I think it will be close.

I have two possible predictions:

- a very very close, narrow Yes win
- all the cautious, silent No vote will come out and it'll be closer to 40% Yes, 60% No

In general, the Yes voters are very dominant and shouty, a lot of my peers are scared to speak up.

Careful gwad, if the yes vote is ahead the SNP might start proclaiming that a new poll shows they're in the lead.

I don't see what's daft about it. If you value the contribution someone makes to your unit, someone who isn't happy and who wants to leave, then you offer to improve their lot. Obviously you don't give too much away, but it'd be rather ignorant to say "like it or lump it" to people who think they're getting a raw deal.
