ive often seen these on tv and particularly the ones related to catholic type religions.
theres some bloke at the front chanting, a bloke walking around spreading some kind of smoke and a hall thats decorated in all kinds of colours.
is it possible that this environment is what causes people to hav 'visions'.

i can imagine the whole thing to be quite intense if you really get into it.

Ive been to church less than 10 times in my life so dont take my word for this but thats sounds like an orthodox ceremony to me.

I doubt that those things cause any hallusinations though. :O

If you ask me, it was Jesus who smoked a bit too much weed. The rest of them jackasses just pretended that they saw stuff.

Religion is bollocks, and so is anything to do with it IMO.

The world would be a better place without it.

maybe not a direct chemical thing but all the sensations cause euphoria or something.

Thank you for this deeply thought through comment. The amount of research spent on this subject must have been immense, if the outcome is such a great and complex analysis. xD

Yup, it's an orthodox ceremony.

Afaik every catholic ceremony includes incense, at least the traditional ones. Nowadays it's rarer (rarer? more rare?), but for TV it's some kind of eye-catcher of course.

I doubt it causes some kind of "getting high" effect, though ^^

The visions are more often associated with charismatic movements. Personally, I think they're more of a trance-like effect than a vision (there's a lot of rhythmic singing going on in a charismatic ceremony), but well, I've never seen such a thing and thus I'm not gonna judge =)

Religion is like culture - people take from it in different ways and give back to it in different ways.

Religion isn't bollocks - it somewhat forms the foundations of society, and some of the potency in religion is inspiring and full of postivity.

Instead of blaming culture and art as the means for a better world - maybe blame humanity - for we are the ones' who interpret such things in the way we do.

Well ofc, these lot have been fucking with peoples minds for 2000 years they are jedi at it. Catholic iconography is something else, you never really grow out of been intimedated by it, pictures of Christ nailed to the cross b4 etc you even can read.

Not answered the question. It's the other lot that normally have 'visions' and all that shit in church tho, the baptists and so on in the US.

Hm, sure that's among baptists as well? Just asking, do you happen to have any links or just general heard of? OK, I admit I didn't give any link either, but I'd be interested =)

P.S.

EDIT: Lol, is it normal that the "save" button in the edit window was labeled "vote now" on the last edit? ^^

Some do have extreme cases of "attacks", so to speak, of purifying thought but it's less likely to happen in a caucasian ceremony. Black people have so intense ceremonies, with singing, basically "partying for the lord", that there's plenty of cases of dehydration or some such, fainting.

I doubt the smoke has anything to do with it, as it wafts basically down the isle, and these "miracle sightings", true or not, happen all over church and even outside.

I would have to say that no, the place and time doesn't effect it, but extreme heat and sensitivity to sudden sensory effects could trigger something.

Usually though, those people who are so sensitive, see virgin mary on a coke bottle and smell bread and go to an euphoric state.

thats what i said. im not saying the exact cause of visions is the smoke. i actually said imo all parts of the ceremony together could probably get quite intense.

the effects of music is obvious as everyone can say there is one piece of music that will effect their emotion. now why couldnt harmony like that + sights + manipulation of other senses = visions etc?

Belief is a powerful thing, people can go "crazy" if they feel strongly enough about what they believe.

Either that, or there is a leaking gas pipe under the church

lol true story this (sad but true)

when i was a kid the only other kids who would be freinds with me were the christians (maybe they thought they could save me lol) anyhoo so i used to go to bible group with them and shit, anyhoo they asked me on holiday and it was this christian holiday place (like butlins but openly acknowledging satans presence, not sticking him in a red coat and calling him the entertainment), anyhoo so the first two days were alright then we went to a prayer meeting and there were people rolling about and their eyes all flicked up back inside their heads, lol i never ran so fast in my life!

scarey stuff, anyway after that i got home ASAP took down all the religious quotes off me wall because those gals wern't coming anywhere near my house ever again and became a lone agent lol.

Well okay I wrongly used baptist for these evangelical churches in the US where they all go mad shouting and balling and collapsing in religious ecstacy during the service. There is a particular word for this carry on - the collapsing in church - but I can't think of it right now. Sure googling that would give which denomination churches this goes on in, but it's not catholics generally who do this in church.

Went to the Vatican last month , just to see where all the Catholics money has gone, very nice indeed, must have spent about 100 gazillion hard earned gold whatevers from the brainwashed poor to knock up a nice pad for the Pope.

For Catholics to continue removing this reality from their minds astounds me, just goes to show how easliy led the masses can be.

There is about 10,000 reasons to realise the Pope runs the worlds biggest cult. One I picked up on while visiting the Sistine chapel, one of the paintings painted by Michelangelo basically was threatening the cardinals or bishops types not to learn German, they were doing this because they were worried there was no future in the Catholic bandwagon and they were likely to be invaded ,they were all about to religiously jump ship.
..You know to stay in power, which is all it is ALL about.
