Let's be honest here.

The 'deal' probably went something like 'So long as you take back power as peacefully as possible and you *appear* to not be nutters then we will fuck off leave you alone, just let us leave as peacefully as possible and we won't respond, as soon as we have left, then you can do what ever you like'.

I don't know how anyone can measure it as a success in any regard, Bin Laden is the winner here, he's become the ultimate martyr to their medieval cause, the Taliban wore down Western forces in the middle east until they signed a peace treaty with the Taliban where *clearly* they got everything they wanted.

The Taliban beat the Western coalition, not just militarily, but diplomatically.

They've evolved, and they'll be able to easily recruit from the masses of people that put trust in the Western forces, then they'll do something which will cause an invasion again, and we'll invade, and wonder why they're not grateful, again.

They didn't beat the West militarily. They just outlasted the west's resolve.

I was thinking about this too, and I guess it applies for both sides.

It does kinda make sense that someone who doesn't want a war due to the destruction it creates then doesn't want a war to end due to the destruction that it would create.

It's pretty obvious that nobody on the 'progressive left' asked for a hasty withdrawal with Afghanistan given to the Taliban, it was fairly obvious that the Afghan army were not up to holding the Taliban, so it would make sense that there was no expectation that they would hold them back.

The problem for me is the 'Bin Laden was killed, mission accomplished' as if that achieved anything, the reason why Afghanistan was invaded was so that the US could save face, then it was sold to the public as 'well the Taliban do some pretty awful stuff' which obviously was a lie if they're happy to allow what's happening.

I just think history will be repeated time and again and we'll end up invading countries on questionable motives, backing corrupt/inept regimes that enjoy the few occupation years serving their own interests.

It's also sad that this is descending into yet another pathetic left vs right argument in the west. Western political fashion is the very least of the issues at hand.

Oh don't worry, this particular gift will keep on giving when there are 50,000 Afghan refugees trying to swim the English Channel in a few months' time, to a chorus of "why should we let them in?"

Also reports of some people climbing aboard a C130 landing gear and then falling off as it was climbing. Also at least 5 dead at the airport though no verfication of how they died but US soldiers have been firing into the air to disperse crowds.

Or why one of them decides to come over and strap a bomb to himself and we go 'crazy Muslims!!!'

They are so fucking desperate over there. Shameful on NATO, UN, US, UK.

As I said, who are they there to protect against? The Taliban or the Afghan people.

The commercial side of the airport is no longer functioning but the US military side is.

Why couldn't the 6000 US and 600 UK troops (and contributions from other nations) run the entire airport? Unforgivable.

Um it does not matter whether the commercial side is closed and the military side is open. There is one fucking runway and it is now overrun, Apaches being used for crowd control (this was the plane in my earlier tweet) but not being effective.

Imagine some fucked off Afghan lobbing a brick into an engine due to their emotional state?

6000 troops is hella lot to protect one airport, just shows how unorganized and rushed this shit show is.

Also I will add there is nothing stopping the Afghans storming the military side when aircraft need to leave that zone to gain access to the runway. Imagine the US forces having to make that decision, shoot or let them overrun.

It is a fucking mess the West made on pulling out so fast.

Yeh but the only way they can stop this is by mass shooting thousands of unarmed civilians. Militaries are not police and are not really trained in crowd control using non lethal measures.

Everyone is hiding, Raab the cunt only got back from holiday last night despite being warned not to go, Johnson recalls Parliament for Wed, why not today. Psaki (Biden's chief spokesperson) has taken this week as holiday. Noone has stood up and said "we fucked up and will try and sort it out".

UN emergency meeting today, no doubt China/Russia will veto and even if they do not it will be "we condemn what is happening, our thoughts and prayers are with the Afghan people" and that will be that.

Finally, a little bit of humanity from our Government.

Interesting how he's split between speaking as a soldier and speaking as a politician; 'We're not going to get people out' and 'What the west has done' is definitely coming from him as a soldier.

Yeh saw that, and how the UK Ambassador has stayed at the airport to personally process as many visa applications as possible.

Russia called the meeting.

I think they'll go the opposite route to what you suggested; 'Why have you abandoned the Afghan people?'.

It's the easiest political points scoring they'll ever do.

Of course it is a stitchup, they and the Chinese have already announced they are willing to work with the Taliban, Russia are meeting with them tomorrow.

My point on the veto would be against any action against the Taliban at this point until things have "calmed" down and eyes of the world are elsewhere.

I play Squad with a bunch of guys that are former military, these usually jovial & banterific bunch were like 'yeah, we don't really wanna talk about Afghanistan'

But they did.

They were horrified about all the friends that they lost over there, knowing that the Afghan army wasn't up to the task, and that we would abandon all the people that supported us in the past, they're horrified because it doesn't just make the UK look terrible and all their hard work for absolutely 0, but because it makes the job of their mates still in the army impossible for future conflicts, why the citizens of occupied countries ever want to trust our Government/army again?
