You used one of those oldschool razors with only one blade or a Gillette style one? Tbh i found it a lot more effective with the oldschool choice, lot less ingrown hair and all that, but, more care was indeed needed.

I tried trimming once with a machine, nicked the skin around the balls. There were screams and blood.
