I always hated PLA's when working customer support, the damn things never seemed to work correctly. So my question is, why not spend a few more bucks and set up a proper TP network? To get wires out of the way I used bathroom hooks (the clear plastic peel off kind) to glue cables to the ceiling, or you can nail cables to the floor sockets. If you own a hose you can put them inside sockets and/or walls.

I have never had a good experience with power line adapters. Convenient? - yes, working? - not so much.

I've never understood the need tbh. 100m on CAT5, more than enough.

Wireless boosters if you use a tablet or laptop.

How do I get my PC upstairs connected across the house to the living room downstairs neatly?

It might be worth for @Big G but when im only in this house for another year, it seems a bit pointless really, besides, it's hardly ideal.

Also, do you lot seriously have cables running along your roofs?

I get putting it in walls, but on walls? :S

Unplug it all and take it down bit by bit. I usually start with the tower, then the monitor and usually manage the mouse and keyboard in a 3rd trip.

This is not an appropriate suggestion. APPROPRIATE SUGGESTIONS ONLY.

Fish it through the cavity walls and floorboards. Bit of a pain and will cost a little but the only real option aside from buggering up plaster. You can get pretty tidy trunking too that you can put around door frames or along skirting boards etc. Just big enough for CAT5.

TBH, a networked house might add a grand or so to the value anyway.

If you wanted to go mad you could add a network port to every socket.

Why don't you get a separate magic Scottish internet connection for each floor and then you can stream everything IN REAL TIME between storeys!

Do you get weatherproof cat 5? I could run it out the study wall on the top floor, run it adjacent to the Sky cable from the dish along the wall, then into the living room.

I've got some external Cat5e running across a wire (along with a power line) to an outbuilding which has an access point on the end of it, it works great I tells ya. I bought a big roll of it and did the terminations myself, though. It's best to get it like this if you're going to be drilling through window frames or whatever to get it outside and then back in again. You don't want ghastly big holes all over the place. Luckily I'm in France so you're pretty much guaranteed to have ghastly big holes all over the place already.

Yeah, raw it would probably be a little cheaper and you can get it whatever length you want...and it wouldn't have to be male/male so long as you are happy with sticking the sockets/plugs on yourself.

I reckon I might be able to feed it through the hole where the Sky cables come in the wall. Definitely the most cost effective / least disruptive solution.

I'd just buy a little unmanaged 4 or 8 port switch to plug it into downstairs (or on which ever floor t'inter isn't).

That's the Devolo unit that takes a feed from the homehub for upstairs. The BT master socket is to the right out of shot.

Yes (ceiling). Someone thought it was a brilliant idea to put the phone sockets right in the middle of the wall between the kitchen and living room

I didn't do a very serious job at getting the work look nice as we plan on moving out soon™

Christ, @Lakih, I know you're a Liverpool fan and therefore your standards aren't very high but I'm sure you could've done better than that. The ducting isn't even vertical ffs. :(

I don't have much of a choice sadly.
@caLLous I'm not a Liverpool fan :(
The duct is as vertical as my poor eyes can make it, I don't have a lever. Also the picture distorts it slightly, it looks a little better in life.
I wanted to change out the cover for the outlet (the dirt brown/orange thing) but I cba... and the landlord would probably complain if I did :'(

Measure from the middle of the top edge of the socket to the edge of that wall on the right and then mark the same distance from the same wall up by the ceiling. Join up the 2 lines and you have your vertical guide (assuming the walls are vertical).

I thought you were a Liverpool fan, I don't know why. I'm sure I have seen pro-Liverpool sentiment from you in the football thread.

I follow Liverpools ups and downs because I have close friend who is a proper Liverpool nerd (tattoo and shit), but I root for Arsenal.

I brought a 100m roll of cat 5 and a pack of connectors which also came with the crimps. As I have decorated each room I've ran it under the floorboards and chased proper module sockets in. I have 4 rooms networked now and run them from a switch in the office.

I think you forget that the vast majority of the people on this forum have a stroke when they think of a screwdriver.

I thought we were all a bit handy when it came to stuff like this, apart from @Trem of course, but that's a given isn't it?

I waited till i recarpetted my bedroom and put a drill through from livingroom to bedroom and ran the cable under the new carpet to the other bedrooms with a switch in each.

I have single link cables running up the corner into the roof space. The connecting to a switch in the loft. Then we plastered over the cables and touched up the paint. Made a hell of a mess knocking the plaster out in the corner but it looks neat enough.
