In all fairness its probably cheaper and more comfortable than the train.

But does the 60 minutes include just flight time or all the airport kerfuffle too? (Transport to/from parking, security, pooping etc)

Still probably faster & cheaper than train but not 60 minutes total travel time!

I am being slightly flippant, but realistically I can be at Edinburgh airport in 15 minutes, 45 minutes before a flight, 60 minute flight time, 10 mins on DLR, done.

So, leave house at 7am, be at airport for 7:15am, flight at 8am, London by 9am, office by about 9:30am. Not too shabby.

2.5 hour commutes of that nature are, however, a pain in the ass, environmentally irresponsible and relatively expensive.

Oh I wouldn't do it everyday.

However it does put it into interesting context when some of the London guys (who can't really afford a decent place inside the M25 perimeter) live two trains + tube (or 1.5 hours away) distance from the office.

The other thing being that you'd have to pay for a hotel if you lived up north and then stayed in London for a week. At which point, you couldn't afford to do that anyway.

Human's aren't (that) stupid. They'd do what they do for a reason. HS2 will change that - it's just a big "get to london quickly" ruse. The only way it's really going to benefit the rest of the country is that it's going to drive house prices up near the stations - making it harder for locals who live and work locally to purchase a house.

Just dropping in at the end of your convo, but be aware that the downside of planes (and int'l trains) is that you *must* be on time, always. Missing a connection automatically means hours of delay or an overnight in some random hotel. Both suck. I once had an overnight at fucking Gatwick Airport because I missed a flight (was caught without cash so couldn't afford a hotel). I chalked it up as experience, but it's not something I'd enjoy again.

My line in the sand with work is ridiculous commutes. I've done it in the past (1.5-2 hours each way) and never again, especially as I now have kids. Stupid house prices are the downside; I could have bought a much nicer house outside Dublin compared to the one we're buying at the moment (the Dublin/not Dublin house price divide is even more stark than London), but what's the point if all you ever see is your bed?

I choose to live in a nice area in Stockholm which is more expensive than closer to work... The commute is worth the increase in standard of living :)

Funnily enough it works the opposite in Helsinki. The further away you are, the cheaper it gets and most workplaces are at the centre.

Then again i think we can't really comment on commutes as Sweden/Finland commutes are rather pleasant.

I was lucky enough to get a job close to my home, 7 min record by car. I live in a nice village on the outskirts of town.

Now that I am looking to move on though I am finding I am having to consider a commute, which I am really not keen on. I like leaving the house at 8 and still getting to work early and I like being at home at 5:15. Weighing up the extra expense and time though it might not actually work out that great anyway and every time I say I am going to quit they throw more cash at me so may end up pretty good where I am.

Commutes round here are pretty shit, unless you like sitting in gridlock behind an empty double decker bus due to the double decker not going to anywhere even remotely useful. My village is about 4 miles out of town and gets exactly two buses a day, only one of them goes into town and thats mid afternoon.

My mum is being her usual insensitive self.... She is auctioning off my dads toy soldiers and sends me the link.... I have been through a horrible time in the last couple of weeks and had just turned a corner... Now I'm sitting in my office praying that people don't notice I'm sobbing, I still have 2 hours before I can go home....

A few years ago I went to my dads to ask him if I could get some of my mum's stuff, but he made some excuse about being too busy, I think he has just thrown everything away, really pisses me off

I dont really mind the auction, I can afford most of it, but I can't cling on to everything that was dads... It's the constant emails about it that get to me... I know he is dead, I don't need to be reminded of it constantly

Its difficult to deal with when its still fresh in the mind, but then that's maybe why your mum is doing it now, to get it over and done with.

Maybe she will find too hard to do later on, and this is a kind of closure for her?

Paid Apps. Bought a premium SMS app a long time ago that allowed me to practically customise it how I wanted down to the last detail. Now the developers have removed the customise options with their newest version and I no longer have the option to roll back so all my settings are gone and I'm stuck with a boring setup. I guess they are catering for the simpletons, damn arse wipes.

Sorry, but its not like he needs it any more. If you want it, explain to your mum and I am sure she will give it to you. My wife has instructions to throw all my shit out when I die, put it out with the bins with my body.

Well...playing Devil's advocate, if she'd done it without telling you, how would you have felt about that? And in addition, how is she to know how you'd feel about it without telling you? I know its something you don't want to have to deal with, but the reality she's dealing with it every day. My Mum didn't know what to do about any of my Dad's stuff and was kind of paralysed about it, and in the end I helped her clear some stuff, although admittedly that was a good year after he died.

I can see that completely. But I can see it the other way too - if she told you in a conversation that she'd sold all the stuff later then you might have felt left out of the loop.

Have a word with her, tell her that you don't need to know what she does with the rest of the stuff.

Mums here, mums there. My mum phoned me to tell me she worked out that she may have stiffed the tax man for 180 euros 20 years ago and now feels bad about things and wants to retroactively declare taxes. At first I wanted to point out that the tax man stiffs my mum for just about everything year on year on year but I ended up just admiring her character and moral compass. This post doesn't actually belong in the annoyance thread I guess.
