yeah chum. loved my old Z, and love my current Z. Atm it looks like I'm going to get a Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro because its a fairly decent solution. My only concern is the scaling of fonts. That many pixels demands scaling, and tbh then why get that screen. Point in case being that the Pro is better than the 13, otherwise I'd get that one because it has a more sensible screen.

That's what you get for failing the true master race with lesser, pfft, portable things.

My SZ1XP/C is still going after ~8 years of faithful service. I've put an extra giggle of RAM in it, added an SSD and replaced the heatsink/fan but other than that it's all original. It works brilliantly as a remote downloading box (except for lack of WoL).

In slightly less yay news, the shutter on my 50D has gone. It will probably cost more to repair than it's worth. :(

There was never anything wrong with VAIOs!

(except the price :( )

...and the support

...and the proprietary parts on their desktops (e.g. PSUs)

...and the shitty bloatware you couldn't remove

Never had to use the support, because the machine itself was so uber. :)

Well, ok, yeah, that's gay but I was talking about laptops (which are obviously full of proprietary parts) and iirc Dell were much worse offenders in the "proprietary PC bits" racket.

Ok, I'll give you that one but I turned my back on all that crap when I put (the unsupported) Win7 on mine. It was a bit of a chore, I had to dig around and find some Vista drivers to make things work but I got a nice vanilla OS install out of it. Next mission; try Ubuntu on it.

both of mine are still going strong; the one I'm typing on and the old one I gave to a friend. She uses it for all her business stuff and loves it. I don't *need* a new laptop, I just *want* a new laptop :(

I only ever had to deal with Sony Support once, and the guy broke the rules and told me to wait a month because all the new Z series would be getting an upgraded screen. I thanked him kindly and bought the current lappy a month later :)

Parts and bloatware though...my current Z series Vaio has a "thing" inside that is it's storage. The OS claims it's an SSD and I suppose technically it is. On the other hand it has a proprietary interface on to the mobo and is of an irregular shape. WHY? the other Z series didnt have this crap! FFS! Re bloatware, pfff is it just countries from the far east who get off on that? Both lappies and my new Xperia phone are riddled with it and had to be cleaned extensively? Why the heck does Sony insist on having their own "social" and "mobile" communities. If I read the word "enrich" one more time in a fucking Sony manual, I will kill one of their marketing drones in a way that makes the papers for weeks

That said, they've sent me a nice pair of noise cancelling headphones to go with my Xperia for free, so that's cool I suppose. unless I can only use them through the Sony Musical Enrichment Content Creation Center For Life Experience Enrichment Empowering(tm) app or whatever.

My previous Z ran Slackware, Debian and FreeBSD with no issues other than me having to choose between which GFX chip I wanted, the Intel or the Nvidia. Even the fast assist buttons were programmable if you could be arsed to actually configure them :)

I suppose I'm the worst user in the world for phones and lappies because the extra bells and whistles mean nothing to me. @ECA's banging on about how great NFC swipe things are in the hardware forums and Im exactly the person who would get such things and then never use them because I couldn't be arsed (and I spoke about them to my tame lezza friend who is a massive technophile and she was like..."why? there's a function for that on my phone!" sooooo....maybe not such a technophile as I thought).

I still think there's no such thing as a bad computer brand(or such), just bad computers. Much like not all asians are bad drivers, not all dell are bluescreening pieces of donkeydoo.

Computar are people too? :cautious:

I should also add that the battery is long since dead and I never replaced it so it runs off of the mains 24/7 now in Speed mode. It's working hard (it has been on 24/7 for probably 60% of the last few years) and one day it's going to lay down and beg for me to a bullet in it but for now it's wonderful.

I don't use any of it's fancier bits anymore (oh yeah, the facia fell off the CD-ROM drive too) - 99% of the time I'm RDP'ing into it so it's just a box on t'inter somewhere. Everything I need works, including the fingerprint scanner.

Lappies I've considered and the things that is/are putting me off:
- Acer Aspire S7 (/w8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, screen 13.3" 2560x1440) : *lots, srsly lots* of reviews claiming it breaks and that Acer C/S is absolutely dogshit.
- Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro (/w8GB RAM, 256GB SSD screen 13.3" 3200x1800) : scaling issues eg if I have to scale, why the screen? it will just eat battery. also, to make the screen the panel is laid out speshul which fucks up the yellows and the contrast (note: yellow fixed in firmware, contrast unfixable, lowest contrast in an ultrabook on the market).
- Lenovo Yoga 2 non-pro, as above but with sensible 1920x1080 screen : noisy fans.
- Asus Zenbook UX301LA (/8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, screen 13.3" 2560x1440) : poor battery, plastic fantastic.

Ideally I'd like a 14" screen, the insides of the Asus, the hinge of the Lenovo, the chassis of the Acer and made by Sony. Why internets? Why?

edit: oooh!!!

Must admit I was a bit gutted when Sony pulled out of laptops, was hoping to talk work into getting me a Z when we had a tech refresh earlier in the year, sadly support concerns with Sony pulling out puy paid to that. Ended up with a Dell Latitude 7440, and I must say, it's a lovely bit of kit. A couple of niggles (Ssd is proprietary and a bit small, Intel's drivers suck a massive amount of dick), but it absolutely flies and boots up in no time. I did have a power board failure due to it being one of the first produced, but Dell were great about it, engineer was out and laptop fixed within 24 hours of it failing.

Must admit since I've been in this job I've changed my opinion of dell quite a bit, sure their consumer laptops suck balls, but their enterprise kit is pretty decent. Lovely monitors too.

Dell have always made good monitors, it was pretty much all of their other consumer doings that got them a bad rep.

How much of that is manmade?
Isn't that sort of an impossible question to answer?

I think a vast majority of it is man made, and it's quite stupid to say 'OMG THAT 10% THAT NATURE DOES IS WHAT KILLS THEM DAMN YOU NATURE.'

Especially when we have the power to more or less curb what nature dictates, which we do, for desirable animals, such as Pandas.

Not really. Halved in 40 years?

Without man's pernicious influence then the natural world comes to an equilibrium and levels fluctuate around a point, they don't just go down for no reason.
