The vast majority of it is down to land clearance and habitat loss, much of which is for stupid "green" schemes like bio fuel and all that crap, none of which offer any long term solution.

Wouldn't be a problem if we built more nuclear reactors and put more money into fusion research.

No I know it isn't but habitat loss is the main reason and most of the habitat loss is to make room for fields upon fields of plants that we really could do without.

As for more local stuff, if we didn't constantly build shitty little housing estates everywhere then it wouldn't be half as bad. Most of the "countryside" is already heavily managed farm land but even that is far better than grim little estates of nu-build 2/3 bed houses and out of town retail parks.

If people want to live on top of each other then they should build more tower blocks of flats, in the towns and cities, not destroy more and more greenfield.

Humans are arrogant, we cannot continue to dick about with everything and expect everything to stay the same. If we chop everything down then the delicate eco systems will change, the biggest change is the lack of diversity.

People are far too worried about a couple of degrees change in temperature, it wont be long until we have the freakish perfect steady temperature but an empty world.

Not really. Halved in 40 years?

Without man's pernicious influence then the natural world comes to an equilibrium and levels fluctuate around a point, they don't just go down for no reason.
I don't think all of it was 100% of it our fault. A vast majority was our fault, and the parts that weren't our fault we probably encouraged it.

Which makes it our fault.

Natural systems tend to equilibrium. If a foodsource gets low the predators die of starvation - so the ecology becomes sustainable. We're the first animal that breaks that.

Sure there's always been a very low level extinction rate for poorly adapted animals - but we're in a massive extinction period of our own making. But we're not really talking about extinction. That's not the point of the report - we're talking, for example, about 70-odd percent of the numbers of freshwater fish have died since the 70's - not that they've died out - just that if there used to be 1,000,000 of them in each river there's now only 300,000 of them.

And that's across the board with all things. It'll be down to habitat loss, farming methods, pesticide use, hunting, pollution of various sorts, distortion of the ecological heirarchy.

The way humans eat up the planet isn't leaving enough undisturbed room for other species to live properly - so their population numbers are rapidly crashing.

It's the eastern Asian cultures fault for wanting exotic animal parts for stupid remedies that don't work. Like horn and tiger glands and such lol.

The reality is most of humanity is following your template; moving to urban areas, living in tower blocks or other high density housing. Concerns about English housing estates on green belt land are pretty parochial when the three largest cities in the world already have a combined population bigger than the whole of the UK.

The problem is not principally how we live, its simply that there are far too many of us, and unfortunately, all the real population growth in the last 40 years is happening in areas that were also home to the most biodiversity. Europe was already an ecological wasteland 100 years ago.

Tiny tiny amount. Contributes to the deaths of hte big cats, but other than that very little.

It's our economic systems and consumption levels.

I agree with much of what you said but that bit is over-egging it.

Even though european farming over the past couple of thousand years has definitely fucked a lot - the last century has seen a massive increase rather than decrease in ecological harm.

We've decimated the lowest level of the ecological tree with insecticides since WWII, for example. That has massive upwards knock-on.

I read a statistic somewhere that said if you had the housing density of New York covering the whole of Texas, you could fit the worlds population there.

It would be a fucking nightmare place to live but you could have the rest of the USA for food, energy etc and leave the rest of the world for nature to do it's thing!

Yes, but its all relative; you couldn't swim in most European rivers a hundred years ago because of all the heavy industry, and the species diversity was already a fraction of the diversity found in Africa or other equatorial areas. These are the areas being fucked up now, which is why the volume of species loss is so much higher; its a denser biomass to lose.

Bags of crisps that are only a quarter full when you open them. If I wanted to buy a bag full of air, that's what I would have picked

Its 12 in the morning, I've just woken up.

Two things:

1) 12 is the afternoon.
2) Pubs open at 11am n00b.

Call yourself a student? Why aren't you in the pub? Lie-in until 10:45, wake, put shorts on, don't wash, go to pub, whole day of pool/table-football/beer and being smelly...

'cos it aint the 90s, and I don't have a unlimited supply of free money, because society hates students now.

Don't conform to this decade's oppressive social normalities around washing - you're supposed to be nonconformist ffs!, use your copious loan money to get into even more massive debt and society has always hated students.

Okay.

Get a job, scum!

Anyway, student debt isn't real, you pay it back as such a stupidly low rate its not even worth thinking about.*

*If they don't fuck it up that is.
