I...opened the document? I really hate Word: imo it's one of the shitest editors that ever was...but this is going too fucking far tbh. I was working on the document in the train, I saved my work and shut down the lappy. Once home I started the lappy, opened the document...and this happend :(
Is it a .doc or a .docx ? If the first, try taking a copy and opening it in Wordpad as it doesn't support any of the formatting bullshit.

atm its a docx, but there's a tonne of images and graphs in there too, as well as 5K+ words man, I'm shit scared of it being fucked up :-(

if I select that particular bit of text, the weird stuff goes away, but if I move the cursor through it, it comes back. what to do?

Probably not what you want to hear but I'd assume it's screwed and copy the text out to Notepad (to remove all formatting and potential for shenanigans) and then from there into a new doc and go again. Images won't be fun, though.

Take a copy and open it in an XML viewer, see if the structure is intact. Then run a repair tool on it or open it with libre office

Good life lesson that teaches you to save documents as Document1_1, 1_2, 1_3, etc. Never lose more then 15 minutes of work.

But as Mystic said and since the damage is done; you can save the text in wordpad(should be) and then fill in the images and graphs. Shouldn't atke too long considering you DO have the graphs and images in a seperate folder and named accordingly. Right? ;)

this is version 6, I have all the graphs and images named, versioned, and saved in a separate place. I am just pissed off that Word is a steaming pile of ass. That aside, I don't mind falling back a version...but I am very concerned as to why this particular one is broken.

Use LaTeX. Not only is it better than word but it automatically makes your research paper look so much more authentic!

Yeah, I know. I actually like LaTeX and have used it in the past. Also, the built-in graphing engine is just awesome. Unfortunately, my delightful school assessors demand Word so they can do the sideline remarking thing. Barstands :-(

not this one, but the one for 2007&2010 unfucked the doc, specifically closing the file, renaming Normal.dotm in %userprofile%\appdata\roaming\microsoft\templates, and reopening the file.

Cheers Rob, you're a star and I owe you a pound of bacon!
No problem chum, glad it could be recovered.

Having a ring of fire 5 mins before an important meeting. I did Tex-Mex last night and experimented with a new recipe, hotter than usual. Nearly made my wife cry and now feel like my arse wants to turn inside out.

The shear volume of vaguely related to your search, search results that google now pukes out when you are trying to search for something. Its just not worth looking on the first page now.

I think the fact that most of France is run on nuclear means we should just take the plunge.

There's a fantastic documentary on Netflix (Pandora something) which covers nuclear power and the risk / reward.

I'm pro nuclear.

Me too, for now. There just isn't any alternative with current tech. Why could switch them all off and burn fossil fuels but that would negate any future benefit of renewables or we could sit in the dark for 20-30-40 years waiting for tech to catch up.

I agree, but there COULD be the tech -right- now, but because Nuclear is a cheaper alternative to investing in green energy, businesses aren't interested, because green energy, nuclear energy and fossil fuel energy is all sold in the same format, so it's how you produce that energy which makes money.

As a planet we should be forced to invest more in our greener energies, not relying on things that could potentially make the planet inhabitable.

Absolutely shit loads gets pumped into renewable energy, or so we are led to believe. Also, its not really the generation that is the problem but the generation at the right time and or storage.

Clearly not enough, we do it so were like, oh that's fine then sort of attitude, Yeah.

We should invest in Green Energies when we're leaving the planet because it's too toxic to live on anymore.

That the anti-wind lobby on FH are slow to point out the dangerous unreliability of UK nuclear power which is expensively failing us just as we are coming into our coldest, windiest months...
We knew it was coming as our power plants to to the end of there useable life and have not been replaced. Good luck wind all the investment has been in you so it is time to step up and show us what you can do! Ohh yeah not enough hence why we are still reliant on the old Nuclear power plants :D
