So for the same price you can either get a suped up Xbox or a cut down PS3? hmm...

The souped down version of the PS3 that still has more technology than the 360. Does the Elite even have wireless?

Completly random but is this value?
Xbox £48 for a recharge kit and controller
PS3 £27 for a controller that recharges with the cable supplied.

I know people will say the ps3 controller is shit but i think that about the 360 one too

As i have said before PS3 had so much potential but Sony took the easy route, trying to sell a console on the promise of a hand full of (what maybe) decent games coming out in 2008 and its brand.
How old is the 360 and Halo its franchise ame has just been released? Comparing the 360 game list to the ps3 list now dose not work when the 360 is a year older.

The cheapo PS3 is now starting to look good value, especially as you can upgrade the harddisk yourself. I don't need the backwards compatibility, the reduction in USBs I could live with, and if it still takes Memory Sticks the card reader will be fine. To be honest, at £299 it would be worth buying as a bluray player/media server (running linux) even if you never played a game on it.

Glad there's a price cut. Maybe chrimbo, but no cheapo model for me. I have a ton of PS2 games to play and only room for one console.

(I'd have bought an Xbox, great gfx, great games but the racket they make. Fuck that.)

Bloody tosspots, Lack of ps2 compatibility was what drove me from buying one at release, cutting back on that even more is moronic.

The ps3 needed more reasons to buy it not less.

I do think thing the cheap one is supposed to appeal the other version is £50 more and has 20gb more 2 games 2 usb a card reader and backward compatibility. If anything they are releasing the cheap one for people to buy it as a blu ray playing media machine maybe.

The new 60GB "value pack" will have a SIXAXIS wireless controller and two first party titles. This, and the 40GB version will be available in shops, and online, from the 10th October

Actually i prefer the PS3 one to the Xbox one :)

I am more playing devils advocate here anyway, i will be buying a next gen console before Xmas at the moment i am leaning towards the Xbox simply because it seems to have a brighter future and more game that i want to play on it

Like has ben said the brighter future i would not agree with i would think the PS3 has better list of game coming out so the brighter future. But the more games you like is the best reason to buy a machine so can't arguee with that. I could try but i would fail ;)

But halo was overhyped shit, it does not show off any capabilities of the console. There are other games that came out that made the console worth while within it's first year. I agree that the best games came out after the first year though. The problem that sony has is that not only does the 360 have a year on it, but that a lot of the latest "big releases" are out on both systems. The lack of exclusives on both consoles means that the one year sales advantage and price point of the 360 have counted for a lot.

No memory card reader at all in the cheapo version ps3

60gb one is while stock lasts aint it?

That was my understanding as well yaka, I thought sony had stopped making that version. The only reason they have dropped the price of the 60gb at all is that their 2 games and an extra controller bundle did not manage to clear the massive stockpile in retail.

Like has ben said the brighter future i would not agree with i would think the PS3 has better list of game coming out so the brighter future. But the more games you like is the best reason to buy a machine so can't arguee with that. I could try but i would fail ;)

As I said above there are very few exclusives now, not much reason for existing owners to switch console, and new buyers will most likely be influenced by the back catalouge available. So unless the game you really like is halo, metal gear at gran turismo then you could buy either and still get everyother racing game released, devil may cry, grand theft auto, pro evo and fifa, random new sonic games etc.

Will you even be able to play God Of War 2 on this cut down stripped out console?

If i bought a PS3 i'd be more inclined into buying some of the nice PS2 games i never played then buy the crappy ports the PS3 is getting a month after the 360 gets it.

I mean look at Orange Box comes out a month later on the PS3 which i think is rather crap.

Back to my question though will i be able to play any PS2 games on this cut down PS3?

Erm, no support for PS2-games = no support for PS2-games? :p

I bought my PS3 mainly for PS2-games and BD-usage, wouldn't even consider getting this ghetto-version :S Will be interesting to see how it sells and does the box have huge letters for "this version doesn't support PS2-games" or will the customers get disappointed at home :S Idiotic move from Sony.

How crap...

Even the Core 360 has access to Xbox games ;/

I'd have probably bought one at £299 but guess i'll have to save up half a grand.

Or learn to read and spend £350 on the top version with 2 games. Its not hard its just under where it said backward compatibility was removed from the basic version

It does? The last time I checked it required HDD for the emulator?
If if that is true it dose not matter as this is he 360 the fact you have to buy the hard disk dose not chage the fact the machine for £180 and thats all you need to play!

Can't disagree with that if Gran Turismo and Metal Gear Solid were both multi platform like Devil May Cry I would have a harder time getting a PS3 but as those are 2 of my favorites a PS3 is needed.

Techno Geeks might get a PS3 over a 360 just for the Blu Ray side. But games choice would be the 360 like you said for now who know what will hapen next year though. Maybe MS will anounce a xbox 6000 and stop making games for the 360 that would help Sony ;)

Let's be honest though cockbag If PS3 could play Halo 3 you still wouldn't be happy.

(I definitely wouldn't, as it would be cluttering up the PS3 release schedule with rubbish).

Well it looks like the pricecut is coming, not as much as I had hoped for but a postitive move non the less. Just a shame the killed backwards compatability with PS2, for that reason alone I can't buy the 'ghetto' version because my main reason for buying any playstation would be God of War 1 and 2, the greatest games Sony have have ever made. :(

PLAYSTATION 3 News Articles: - Entertainment like you’ve never seen before

In the UK and Ireland, a Value Pack consisting of a 60GB PS3 with extensive backwards compatibility and two first party titles will be on sale at a price of €499 (£349). Remaining on sale while stocks last, the 60GB model represents outstanding value for the keen gamer wishing to upgrade to the High Definition capabilities of PS3. Once stocks are exhausted the new 40GB model will be the only one available in the SCEE territories.

I would definately not buy a non-backwards-compatible PS3. My PS2 is on its last legs and I'm buggered if I'm going to buy a new one when the PS3 should play them upscaled. What kind of treatment is this for Europe ?

Yeah that's pretty lame - given that it was fairly costly for them to include the hardware to make the PS3 backwards compatible I think it's a good move to offer a fairly significantly cheaper model with no PS2 playability but removing the option of the 60GB model is poo. That über version is all well and good, but then the two options are both extreme ends. There should be three options like the 360, el cheapo, premo and über.

WTF

They just gave the 60 Gb BC COMPATIBLE version a big price cut. If you want BC then buy one with it. They're not forcing you to buy the 40Gb.
