Oh and Soze, you may want to check the pricing of the ps3 and 360, there is no £100 price difference now. The Pro console was discontinued. The comparable model is the elite which is £199 rrp. The ps3 is £249.

I know 1 - 1 they are similar or the PS3 is better value but if you just want to play a game you can buy the Arcade machine which is sort of £100 less.

I looked on VGchartz today for the first time in a while and noticed that the PS3 is now outselling the 360 in Europe.

PS3 had been doing bigger numbers in Europe for a long time. But don't believe anything from VGChartz, they pull their numbers out of thin air and have zero credibility.

360 sales are actually higher than expected for the holiday season, especially in the States so Microsoft might actually extend that worldwide lead a little bit. Certainly not the bumper Christmas Sony have been promising for the last 2 years and they are never going to get close to those annual PS2 numbers until the hardware hits the £100 mark.

I shopped around and managed to get a new (old style) PS3 for £190 but every where else it was around £250 for the slimline. That's still £100 too much if they actually want to compete in unit sales. They have lost, its too late now to win and they have made a massive loss, I read somewhere that its somewhere in the region of 4.5 Billion dollars.

I'm a little confused, compared to the Wii then yes both systems have been completely trumped by it. However this thread is over a year old, and the recent stats seem to suggest that the PS3 hasn't got far to go to catch up with the 360 (maybe by this time next year?). This generation isn't over yet if you're referring to the PS3 / 360 sales, but otherwise it's a one horse race.

A lot of people assume that 360's success in UK means it's doing well in mainland Europe. It's not.

Honestly though, this obsession with the 'winner' and 'loser' is pretty silly. Nintendo are the ONLY ones in it purely for the gaming business. Microsoft are in games to push themselves into the living room, and Sony had big format war win thanks to their console.

This time last year, 1 of my mates had a PS3 and about 7 had 360s. Right now 6 of my mates have PS3s and 2 have 360s :d

A mate told me that MS includes rma units shipped in the sales figure and the report said if thats true you have to knock 30% off the ms numbers. I could not find anything online that backs it up but it would be interesting if true.

It's bullshit, 39 million units sold through retail. That does not include any new units issued for RMA purposes and Microsoft repair over 90% of failed consoles anyway.

Or send replacements that make dodgy whirring noises that sound seriously iffy *grumble grumble*.

Hehe, you won't get me to defend the quality of the repairs, just the retail sales numbers. ;)

No, but it doesn include the number of people who just bought a second Xbox instead. I think you'll find this number is actually quite high.

Same for the PS2 though... I don't think it's worth making a point of.

I can't deny that, however most people have been able to get warranty repairs under the 3 year warranty program. The only people buying new second consoles are the ones who got banned from Xbox live for running hacked machines and that is estimated at around 1 million bans thus far.

I was actually considering that until I thought "fucking hell, that's an utterly stupid idea". So I'll wait until this piece of shit falls to pieces, which it sounds like will be any day now and complain that MS have sent me a duff bit of crap.

That may be *most* of those sales, who knows but it's certainly not all. Like I said, I've had my xbox warranty replaced and the thing sounds like a bag of hammers trapped in a hoover. If I had more money than sense I'd be buying an X360 elite about now.

Given the disappointing hardware sales and the fact that PS3's A++++++ title LBP has sold poorly in the all-platform charts, is it fair to say that PS3 came last this generation ?

(PS3 is the only one I own, I'm not being a M$/Ninty fanboi)

Discuss...

My PS3 plays Blu-Ray, my Wii is an ineffective door stop. Case closed.

Does the ps3 not win now as Uncharted 2 is better than anything the 360 has to offer? ;) /ducks

It still astounds me that the Wii has done so well - but I repeatedly hear about people simply not using theirs anymore. My boss at work has one, she hates computer games but her pal's son had one and she was all "zomg Wii sports" so she promptly bought one. She never plays it, but for the money at the time (£179 if I remember rightly) it was small change for a laugh when her pals came over, a welcome change to the usual Karaoke. My 59 year old mother saw tetris on the colour gameboy then asked for one for Christmas, again she never plays it. It seems the novelty wore off fast, but it's not stopping it from selling like hot cakes.

To those with a Wii - do you still use it?

Yes, but only socially, never alone, unless it's wii fit to check my weight.

I know people who use their wii's regularly, none of them are traditional gamers. That is where ninty won, they went after the market share that wasn't already gaming. It's why so few of us here still play wii's if we have them.

We still use ours, but again novelty wears of with new games quite quickly - they are exceptionally good for getting all of the family involved though, which can be fun :)

Makes sense Chet, but I wonder how they'll tackle the next generation war now that the motion controller market is truly saturated, surely they can't rehash the same again with (for example) HD graphics and media centre style functionality?

I doubt ninty will do anything with the wii apart from add-ons for at least 3-5 years. Makes no sense to. As for the next gen war, I see MS and Sony splitting up the remaining market between them, I don't see we will see a "winner" as we have had in the past. The ps3 has at least 5 years life in it still, IMO. The 360 maybe another 3 years. So i suppose it depends what MS do next.
