Not Premier League excatly, but what do we think of Almunia for England?

BBC SPORT | Football | My Club | A | Arsenal | Wenger backs Almunia England bid

Personally, i'm not too keen on the idea because I think it sets a bad precident for International Football in general.

However, I feel it's unfair to deny him the chance.

People are saying on 606 that if Almunia shouldn't play for England, then neither should the black players like Wright-Phillips, Heskey etc because they're 3rd/4th/5th generation immigrants, but it's a whole different story. Almunia was born in Spain, he is 100% Spanish, and has only lived in England for 5 years.

Difficult call, but I think the con's outweigh the pro's.

It's common practise to nationalise players all over europe, and the far east. Think we are too picky, but there is something that is not quite right about letting a Spaniard play with the 3 lions on his chest just because he has lived here for a few years.

What we need to do is accept that our current crop of goal keepers are not good enough, and spend time developing the younger keepers who have potential. If we have to turn to a foreigner to play in goal for us, than surely everything Trevor Brooking has been ranting about for the past few years is proven?

To be fair, this goes on all over the world all the time in all sports. The problem is it to do with gaining citizenship.

In other countries they gain citizenship of that country (ie: spanish, german etc) however almunia gained BRITISH citizen ship and not English which puts complication into the matter. Previously there has been a gentlemen's agreement in place where players wouldnt be called up through gaining citizen ship due to the fact it british and not English/Scottish etc. Really dont know where to stand.

Personally I think no to it, sure he a decent keeper but I want a ENGLISH goalkeeper. Hell i want every player to have some true bond ot the team above actually having just lived in the country for 5 years.

The only situation where I could see myself and the majority of the public accepting anything like this is if the player had lived here since they were a child. Growing up in a country gives you a bond with it, no matter where you were born.

I have no problem with a naturalised player being picked in the England team. But surely there must be a better choice than Almunia? No disrespect to the Arsenal fans but he seems very average to me.

Yeah the union side have Vainikolo, a Tongan, as well.

The Cricket team have Strauss (South Africa), Pietersen (South Africa), Shah (Pakistan), and now Morgan (Ireland), and plenty of others in the past.

I know it goes on a lot, but I don't like it.

This all started with a throw away comment form Almunia saying he had more chance of playing for England as he is about 5th in Line for Spain.

If he is a better keeper than the best english keeper and playing him would help i dont see a problem.

Fucking annoys me to be honest, we have Joe Hart and Ben Foster, both very promising English keepers who deserve a chance. Almunia is a fucking traitor if he wants to play for England, same as that complete cock Kevin Peiterson.

I may have missed it but I don't think he ever said "I want to play for England" just that if England asked him he would not dismiss it without thinking about it. But mo if Spain ever though England would play him they will give him a Spain cap in a friendly and thats the end of it.

Least fergi shows more passion then most the managers in the game, even more impressive considering the mans age :D

So far teh game going our way, as poor as middlesborough goal scoring is this season they still may be able to get one. It a very lackluster game at the moment. Berbatov (aka sloth-atov) slows play down to a standstill way too often. 2 old men in central midfield means closing down and chasing is very limited so hoping for a bit more through there.

Slow game, no outstanding football being played and all so laid back. hoping for a better second half... looking to much like Chelsea :flame:

Park, what a player. Never moans, gives 110% all the time, and pops up in the most unlikely positions to score :)

park is a good team player, not the best player in the world however his work rate is incredable. Great finish though along with a great reverse pass from rooney

and lmao at the ref on teh rafeal handball having just come on... gives the freekick and looks like he told middlesborogh player to fuck off when asking about a yellow card.

trying to decide which game to watch at 3pm kickoff. Thinking i go for the footballing team of Arsenal even though they not really playing for anything and as fergi said. They can play pat rice and wenger

There we go, with equal games played Utd are 6 points clear with the same goal difference. Puts us in a good position indeed for the run in. Drop points to Arsenal and we still in a good position. Can lose 2 as long as we get better goal difference then Liverpool which gives a little more confidence of finishing this up.

Haha. Insane football today.

so chelsea 2-1 up inside 10 minutes, Stoke had a goal disallowed and so has west ham in same game.

arsenal denied a penalty then score from the corner given.

then go lower down, bristol rovers 2-0 up in 5 minutes etc etc. Match of the day should be fun :D

Barcelona.....WOW

Could have been even more if not for Casilias, who made some superb saves that a lesser keeper probably wouldnt have

So in the Arsenal game the player got a touch on the ball so its not a penalty it looks like Arshavin points claiming a corner then wags his finger no when the penalty is given.

Is that something you want to see from your players or would you rather they just shut up when it goes your way. I will always remember Robbie Fowler doing it agaist us so I am all for honesty.

the almunia for england thing is interesting mind.. i know some peeps have doubts.. but if .. and thats a big IF... he's good enough, why not?

how many of frances world cup winning side werent french? djorkaef, zidane, desailly.. and how many of portugals team are brazilian born?

england have done it before with john barnes (jamaican) , and jamaica do it all the time with english peeps

like its been mentioned before... england cricket team never hd a prob with so called foreigners.. but on the whole they been good enough to play.

i mean peeps like: Gooch, robin smith, alan lamb, andy caddick, devon malcolm, alan mullaly, KP, christ.. we even had the king of spain play for us.... ashley giles!! :-p

thing is.. every sport does it.. and every country does it.. all that matters is.. are they good enough to get into the side?

The difference with the cricket team and John Barnes examples are that they're from former british colonies.

I don't know why i think that makes a difference, it just does in my mind :p

to be honest when a player feels it that blatent but dont want to lose everything they should walk to the keeper, tell him that he rolling the ball to him however he needs to throw it off for a corner. Would reset the game where it should be and piss of the FA and the Ref in one go :D

THis is the difference between english teams and overated teams like Real Madrid....the english teams wont let Barca play like that. Xavi received the ball in the centre circle and I counted 12 seconds he had the ball for before Real Madrid closed him down.

It's amazing that people think this Chel$ki game was a one off and that Barce will put 6 past them. They dont think hold on maybe RM are crap (Liverpool 4-0) so Barce might not be the super team people thinks against decent cmpetition?
