I bought it already so it doesn't matter. We're meant to be giving TdC advice anyway, not me!

My personal experience with Samsung is they are very sluggish with updates. But so are HTC the official WWE Hero 2.1 Rom was released at the end of June and the the HTC 2.2 update plans do not appear to include the Hero. I don't really think any of the makes whith Custom UI's are better than the others, the one thing to think about with HTC is they will always update the flagship phone first and that is currently the EVO not the Desire so by the time Android 3 comes out who knows how far down the list the Desire will be.

Rumours were that the Nexus 2 was a Motorola with a slide out keyboard so i am not upset about that tbh. What does worry me is that my next phone will come complete with a interface that the manufacturer thinks i want.

What i really really want is a Nokia made Android phone, Nokia has always had solid hardware but a dodgey OS so a Android Nokia could be a think of beauty.

I was quite concerned about this one when I heard it. I've got the HTC Hero, I really wasn't impressed with the slow updates from HTC and was hoping that Google would do a new phone in the future with the same fanatical updates the Nexus One received. Obviously I only had my Hero a few months when the Nexus One came out - a bit too early to upgrade back then.

Looking at the situation logically though, Google will eventually need another developer phone if they're going to take advantage of new hardware. They've previously sold the Dream/G1 and the Magic as developer phones (check Wiki pedia: Android Dev Phone), and they'll probably be branding the Nexus One as Dev Phone 3 shortly.

So they'll probably work with HTC (or another manufacturer) on the next phone, with an unlocked version being sold to those who are registered developers, and a public version with custom software on top and a locked bootloader.

Hardly an ideal situation really - many happy Android users love their devices because they can put new ROMs on them fairly easy. If the manufacturers keep on locking it down and the only open phone is the developer phone - some Android users will feel far too locked down.

It is still speculation. Putting people off buying a good phone due to random speculators is just not on.

Its not speculation at all; Samsung have set up a big development centre for Bada in Germany and are busy rolling out developer incentives to create apps as we speak. However, that doesn't mean they're going to dump Android; it'll probably be something like Nokia's Meamo/Symbian segmentation, and Samsung are also going to be the first manufacturer to launch a Windows Phone 7 device.

FWIW, the first Bada phone, the Samsung Wave, is actually rather nice and agressively priced. Its got a terrific screen and is a little less bulky than your average smartphone. Its biggest problem is the HTC Wildfire, which is actually all the smartphone most people need and hits a similar segment.

Supposed to be...
X8 Announcement and XPERIA Updates | Product Launch Blog

We are today happy to confirm that all of these phones will now get the update to Android 2.1 from the latter part of Q3 and onwards (timing will vary from market to market, some will be in Q4. Please follow this blog for further information with regards to exact timing of the upgrades). We are of course very glad to offer this upgrade earlier than originally planned. Xperia™ X10’s position will also be further strengthened through the addition of HD video recording as part of the same Q3 upgrade. A further upgrade to the Xperia™ X10 in Q4 will make it possible to connect and display wirelessly content on your television and enhance the Timescape™ and Mediascape applications.

Woo! Updates to 2.1! What 2.2 is the latest and 3 may be out not too long after these updates? :(

Welcome to the world of network approval. Google can throw out OS updates to their heart's content, but then they need to go through manufacturer and network QA, which often takes longer than the original OS dev (just because of the numbers of testing bodies available v. number of handsets in the manufacturer/network portfolio). Networks are getting faster at it (although some are better than others; Voda are notoriously slow); but until Android dev slows down you're always going to be in this situation with firmware 2-3 releases behind; and for most people this is acceptable; 95% of customers just want their phone to work, and don't want anything to break it; the vast majority don't even download the OTA updates even when they do become available.

After seeing a friends Galaxy S today i am totally in love with it after about an hours play about so much so my desire sold on Ebay today for £290 buy out after only being up for 3 hours and i've ordered a sim free Galaxy for £399.

I couldn't believe how good the screen was and everything just felt really good compared to some of the reviews i have read.

heh.

And Aada to be fair, you have this year done same post for the iphone, desire and now galaxy s.

You have a problem, seek help. Shopaholic.

The iPhone was last year get it right will you, and what i do and don't do with my money has absolutely nothing to do with you.

I got £370 selling my iPhone, bought the Desire for £160 give or take and sold it for £290 and the Galaxy is £400.

I've really not lost much money and tbh i don't really care either because you see i work and earn a nice wage something you may not do.

Look at your own spending habbits before giving others advice.

Loving it so far, the first thing that strikes you is the clarity of the AMOLED screen. This is my first smartphone, so i don't really have anything to compare it against, but i really like it.

The screen is stunning, you can also actually see what your doing when you are outside in the sun.

Haven't tried Swype text entry yet as i don't know how to turn it on without getting the manual out lol.

I can say though i do miss somethings on my Desire mainly the HTC widgets like the clock/intergrated weather widget and calendar.

I can though that Samsung Kies is a real pain in the fucking arse it detects my phone on our windows 7 32bit laptop but not on our windows 7 64bit PC. From what i've seen it's a pretty huge issue at the moment although one you won't find until you have the phone.

Since the Galaxy doesn't support OTA updates i think there will be some pretty pissed off people when 2.2 hits because obviously you need Kies to update your phone unless Samsung fix it.

Have you tried it yet Aoami?

Yep, I've got AMOLED on my desire and it's lovely, however the super AMOLED is soo much better, especially in direct sunlight.

It's a shame Samsung are not letting anyone else have them for the foreseeable future.

Should be: select, and then press and hold an input field (any input field, such as the body of a new email) and you'll get a menu come up. Choose "Input Method" and then Swype.

Kies works for me on my windows 7 x64 lappy. No problems with it, other than it's a typically bulky piece of pc/phone software, but thats never likely to change. Only issue i've had so far is the UI being a tiny bit laggy when i get a bit over excited and try and do things too quickly. Oh, and all the packaged apps I can't remove, which is annoying.

As i said, it's my first smartphone, so i'm still getting used to/finding out about apps and stuff before i look into what it's really capable of.

edit - also finding and editing a hilarious text message notification sound, naturally.
