Hopefully getting a Desire tomorrow, quite looking forward to it. The Nokia N8 does almost look worth waiting for though.

HTC Desire is what all the cool people have lately.
No one feature stands out compared to other phones, but as a whole package it beats all the other phones hands down.
Physical size, weight, screen size, speed and customisability all add up to a sum greater than the parts.

Also you're used to the flip clock look of HTC Sense. Flip clock + weather app is still there. :)

Odd thing though, my weather app has been acting up for a week or so now. It's saying I'm in the United Kingdom when I'm at home. Yes, I know I am, but a couple of weeks ago it was actually reporting my location correctly.
Any ideas anyone?

The Samsung Galaxy S is the current king of Android phones With the bigger and better super amoled screen and some internal memory and there are rumours it will get 2.2 in august.

If you want to have the newest software as soon as possible then the Nexus One is currently the phone to get it is a Desire with out Sense for all intents and purposes. But as a Google phone you do not have to wait for HTC / Samsung to release an update.

The Desier is a strong favourite here and if you like the Sense UI (Touch Flo to Win Mo users) it really is hard to look past this phone. The only downside i see is the delay in updates.

Galaxy S > Desire = Nexus One > SE X10

Galaxy S apparently has some speed problems if you use Samsung's huge widgets, but drop them and it is zippy as fuck.

Galaxy S also apparently has "protection" against rooting. Which sucks, if true.

Definitely the Desire (the missus has a Legend and I covet that - a lot); but if you don't want the Sense UI or any other pre-bundled overlay, the Motorola Milestone XT720 looks pretty funky; decent spec and cheaper than its main rivals as well. I quite like the unusual shape as well.

Between the Galaxy S and the Desire. I'd say HTC will support their phone more in the long term though.

You could also wait and see what is coming out in Autumn...

They said the same about the SE X10 as well, but jerpelea and Bin4ry at XDAdev managed it with some creative thinking and perseverence.

They still can't apply full custom ROMs as yet, but you can get su (root) access meaning you can install or remove any feature you want. Many people hate Moxier Mail on the X10 because it sucks up battery life. People who have rooted their phone have said that their battery life suddenly gets a lot better when Moxier Mail has been removed.

A recommendation to anyone with an Android phone... bookmark xda-developers because they're adding support for new handsets all the time.

As much as the hardware is lovely, I can't recommend the samsung. They are still pushing for their own linux os for phones and the updates for the old galaxy were shocking!

Still say that you are best off getting a nexus one, if you can. Else the desire.

I can get a new phone in August. I don't want the iPhone as I don't like it. I love the Blackberry, but the buttons are too small for my hands :(

The HTC Desire looks nice, also you can turn it sideways meaning the buttons are even bigger. What are peoples experiences texting with this phone?

Texting is nice.
It autocorrects slight slips so say that you type teztong, it will highlight texting as a suggestion. A space, punctuation or return accepts the suggestion, or you can tap one of the other suggestions.

Put another way, I can hold a conversation with my wife in Gtalk and my words come out fine, but I *know* I've made some typos on the way.

To be fair I haven't checked, just going by the trouble a mate had off them with their customer services (worse than BTs)

I guess its down to whats best for you. I can only really use o2 where I live, don't get much of a signal from anyone else.

The specs for the Desire HD were leaked recently - bigger screen, more memory and HD camera, maybe wait for that?

i've found their customer service to be average. not as good as O2, but a damn site better than vodafone, the only other 2 service providers i've used.

they will -at best- give me a new TP2. oh well. when I offered to take a Desire at cost, he wouldn't give me one, because of "people" being "fraudulent" with their "insurances" :-/

Bollocks, ask for full replacement value minus the excess. Then buy your phone sim-free.

But most of all, read your insurance contract!

I'm going for the X10 in September. A couple of people at work have them and love them, especially as the Android 2.1 update is out now. Whats more the case design is still teh sex.

Gotta say though I am still loving the Satio. No software issues to speak of, loads of features, an awesome camera, and damn good at calls and texts. Which, at the end of the day, it what these things are REALLY for.
