After about 15 years of microsoft OS'ses I finally decided to install my first linux (building an ION based HTPC) After a bit of help from google (a lot actually) I got everything setup and working as it should.... except network speed.
When copying files from my windows shares or my NAS I only get about 6MB/s. I also tried ftp but the speed remains the same.
When I use windows to copy to the HTPC (samba) I get the normal 10-11MB/s

Any ideas? Remember... complete noob so use easy and small words :D
(Oh and it's Ubuntu 9.10 btw)

Why not measure how long it takes to copy a certain sized file instead? More reliable than saying how much network traffic there is without knowing what kind of overheads are involved.

But seriously, sounds like a non-problem.

are all your network kit things on auto_negotiate network speed? in that case things may be going wrong there.

Yup, set to auto negotiate and connected at 100mbit according to the network diag thingie :D
Are you suggesting I manually set the speed?

what happens if you hard set everything to 100MBit?

Setting it to fixed 100mbit did nothing....

I did a few tests. Using the Ubuntu machine to copy a 1.1GB file from the windows share or NAS (tested both smb and ftp) took on average 3min14sec
Using the windows machine to copy the same file to the ubuntu share took on average 1min40sec

Really don't have any idea why there is a difference.
Copying over 2TB worth of movies and tv episodes so I better use the windows machine to do the copy :D

dude, tbh I don't know why it's taking so long. if you hard-set everything on the network to 100MBit the only thing I can come up with is that it may be doing a name lookup, something with SMB messing up or some odd rights issue.

thing is, it seems as if the box is not on full duplex in the networking whereas the NAS is (or vice versa). odd things can happen if a network interface is not in sync with it's upstream link partner. have you tried connecting the box directly to the NAS with a cable to see what it does speedwise?
