Yes - smart bulbs are effectively always on to power the WiFi / logic etc.

I got a pair of Intel 10GBE fiber adapters and some cable. Le speed, it's beautiful :D Heads up @caLLous, I have the baby (4 drive) version of your HBA and it can't keep up with the network now, maxing out at about 5~600MB/s. Price wise it was only a couple of WD RED 2TB disks so I'm not missing out. Seriously considering getting another of the 4 drive cards, and splitting the disk set 2:2. On paper that should let me double up speed again :)

Good stuff! I honestly don't know what the limit is on mine, the server is on a gigabit network and I don't do anything strenuous at all with it (in fact the whole thing is massive overkill for what it's used for but hey ho). Scrubbing is about as exciting as it gets from a read speed point of view. Those speeds I quoted before were from when I added a 6 disk RAIDZ2 VDEV to the existing 6 disk RAIDZ2 VDEV but those disks were spread across 3 controllers (some on the LSI card, some on a Highpoint Rocket 4 port card I had previously and some straight off of the motherboard) so it's impossible to guage speed from any one of those controllers.

I do have a problem recently though, it's told me a few times (over the space of about a month) that one of the disks has been removed by an administrator (which is a lie) so I don't know if I have a dodgy port on a controller or a disk is on its way out maybe... Each time I've rebooted and the pool has resilvered the "removed" disk and all has been fine. It's in the 10 disk RAIDZ2 so the pool can still run "in a degraded state" but it's slightly concerning nonetheless.

And stop messing about; what you need is this. :)

1GB ethernet? Meh, something like 100odd MB/s I guess? I got 450MB/s with a trunked quad-1GBE card point to point. Re your disk loss, hmm could be a dodgy cable or connector that goes as the server heats up or some such? Sounds disquieting tbh.

Me, Imma gonna upgrade my server to one of the small xeons with the intel gfx built in, and get one of those mobo's with three or four 16x PCIe slots. Then it's extra raid card time! Hoo boy, I'm excited :D

Yeah I hardly do any across the network transfers though, other than streaming ofc and that won't ever get close to saturating a 1gb connection here.

I have a Xeon E3-1245 v3 (with onboard HD Graphics P4600), I highly recommend it. I bought it with Handbrake encoding in mind but now I just do remuxes of Blu-rays straight to mkv so Plex can handle them. The Xeon actually performed better than the i5-3570K though (I think Handbrake likes hyperthreading). Now I think of it, I actually have a mobo with 4 16x PCIe slots too (the ASUS P9D WS), it was the one I ended up on when I was looking for ECC support.

And hmm, I'm going to keep a close eye on things and figure out which actual drive it is that's being funky and switch connectors around if it happens again.

great minds think alike it seems :) I was looking at things like the 1230-V3 but I'm a bit torn between 1150 and 1155 chipsets tbh. Only firm requirement is the minimum three x16 PCIe slots really.

You don't get onboard gfx with the 1230-v3, looky here for the full list - you need the 1225/6 v3 or the 1245/6 v3 if you want the speed bump too. I've seen loads of people with servers with the 1225 v3 so it will be fine. I would definitely go for the Haswell (1150) if you're building from scratch.

Hmmmm I am yeah. good tip, I missed the lack of gfx with that other xeon. I'm basically replacing my old server, which is my old i7, which as you can expect takes a lot of juice to keep running :)

How much? Nice but how's the viewing angles from the side in it?

I have my doubts on acute angles

So what 4k content are you gonna use on it?

Consoles don't support it, nothing over air, pretty much a few nature documentaries unless you have a gaming pc :p

I would sex it though.

4k is mostly pointless just now buuuuuuut it's getting hard to get a good panel with good features (e.g. micro dimming) that isn't 4k. Samsung do a 1080p 65" for £1700, and this is only £300 more for 4k not to mention a better panel. Made sense to spend a bit more for future proofing - I'll have this set for a good 10 years.

You didn't answer what the curve is like and how it is for viewing angles?

Gets delivered on Saturday. Shouldn't be a problem as it's just me and the missus and we sit 14 feet away, directly in front.

I asked my wife this question but her response was "we aren't having another telly" and also I got the feeling she just wanted to tell me to fuck off, but what I want to know is can these curved tellys be wall mounted and if so I assume it will have a straight bracket on the back and then won't they look really shit from the side? Also, what is the point of the curve @Big G?

Yes, they can be wall mounted.

Personally, I think it's a gimmick, but the theory behind it is that to fully enjoy a 4k experience, you should be sitting close to a large TV. Sony touted the same line when 1080p came along and it makes even more sense with 4k. In addition to sitting close to the TV, they want to immerse you in the experience by the slight "wrap around" of the TV itself. If you've ever had a demo of a curved 4k TV with 4k content up close, then it is truly stunning to watch. It's like looking through a window.

On a daily practical level, I don't think it's going to make much difference, especially if all you watch is Friends and Eastenders. I'm quite looking forward to the improved glare / reflections which the curve mostly eliminates.

10 years is a bit optimistic isn't it? 8k will come around fairly soon (or at least in gaming PCs, 4-5 years)

Still, very nice...though I think my wife might have a seizure if I spent 2 grand on a TV :)

The screens are great and yup, 1080p will be gone within a year or two which is great, but the problem still remains that over the air content won't be here for 5-10 years.
Netflix/Amazon putting out 4k content will help, and games look INCREDIBLE at 4k.

Assetto Corsa at 4k/60fps makes me sexwee a bit.
Shame consoles are going to hold everyone back for another 6-7 years :(

I've had my existing TV for nearly 6 years and it'll be going in a spare room until it dies a death. I'll do the same with this one - run it for as long as possible and then stick it in another room eventually. I'd say 10 years would be a minimum.

Its supposed to represent a more cinematic type experience but to be honest 4k Projectors would be better and bigger display, bloody expensive though.

Very nice - picture shown on the display is Dubai Marina I believe.

My best mate has just spent £50k renting an apartment on the palm for a year.....

...and on topic he's bought an 84" TV to go in it o_O

Massive TVs are dropping through the floor in price, a 75" will set you back under £3000.
