I can't vouch for the software experience of the LG Gaffa but the ReadyNAS software is solid.

As I finally used up my 2tb of media space in my linux server I decided to purchase the HP Microserver and another 2 2tb drives. So the setup is now 4 x 2 tb drives in the HP running RAIDZ1.

Later today I will sort out the AFP and the Samba shares and report back here but so far so good :) Oh and it is so quiet :)

FreeNas 8.01 beta 2.

Currently have a single raidz pool with 3 datasets all being shared over samba and afp. Fucking rocking, ordered an additional 8gig of RAM for it. Very impressed to say the least.

Did you order the HP Spare? The first bits I tried failed as it has DDR3 Ram under clocked to run as DDR2 like a lot of netbooks and it seems some RAM does not under clock well.

Indeed got mine up and running yesterday with some Deebs lovin'. Using FreeNAS 8.0.1 beta 3, got 2x 2TB Hitachi drives set to mirror.

My wife's got loads of 150MB photos from microscopes that she really doesn't want to lose! :)

I now have 2 HP Microservers. 4 x 2tb in each one in a RAIDZ configuration, 8gig RAM, and I keep a spare 2tb drive lying around just in case.

Seriously cannot fault the setup and I have to say after playing around ZFS is just awesome to use.

We did intend to do a patch to BETA3, but one of the issues took a lot longer to sort than I had anticipated, and we sort of lost our window. I'm also in the middle of a cross-country move that has cut into my FreeNAS time.

That being said we are putting the finishing touches on BETA4 right now, and I should have a sneak peek at it up on the nightly server in a bit.

FreeNAS-8.0.1-BETA3 - Page 5

So no hotfix for the SMB issue yet. Guess we'll have to wait until beta 4.

Hopefully we'll see Beta 4 soon.

How easy is it to update freenas when it's on a mem stick? Are there config files you can rip out and copy back in?

Update through the web interface is fine.

Alternatively if you're backup conscious:
Export the config from the web interface.
Overwrite the usb stick with the new version manually.
Login to web interface when it restarts using defaults.
Restore config using web interface.
