I'm on holiday in the US, so all I've done is seen there's a port on the sick beard forums giving installation instructions. If some guy is charging, it's GPL software, so he's boned.
Extra tip. SABnzbd 0.6 is out. It seems to me to massively reduce the load on the ReadyNAS Duo. As it's a sparc box this is quite handy so I'd suggest you go straight for 0.6.

Sods law, I ordered this morning: Proliant & 2xWD20EARS 2TB best part of £350.00 delivered. With the £100 redemption I'll effectively get 4TB of storage for the price of replacing my NAS with something much better specified and upgradable.

My proliant is ordered :)
Set mine up yesterday. It's not just a NAS it's just utterly a PC that can easily be used as a NAS.

Going to take me a little while to decide on just how I want it configured so that it's "just so" but I think the next step will undoubtedly be to just straight out order another two WD drives when the cashback arrives.

FreeNAS 8 is definitely not the way to go at the moment though. The documentation is too patchy. It's fine if you just want a file server but it won't help for anything else.

Proliant is just fucking epic.

Chet, dunno what drives have you picked up / are going to pick up for yours but I got the WD20EARS (2TB EcoGreen drives from Western Digital) for mine.

So far I've had the thing running just on my chest of draws and they don't disturb me. They're in Scan's "Today Only" today and as my cashback cheque has been confirmed I shall be ordering another two as it's about £110 delivered for the pair.

Went for the samsung F4's, they should be here next week. The deskstars have beter reviews than the wd from what I've read. I'm going to stick with just the two hd's for now, and probably bump the ram up

So what would be the best way to sync various pcs (selected folders) on my wireless network to such a server, software wise. Presumably the proliant can mirror and stripe at the same time?

ReadyNAS Duo bar none if you want a NAS. Trust me G.

Also, you can claim a free 1tb hard drive - Netgear RND2110 ReadyNAS Duo 1TB NAS Drive - GREAT PRICE | Ebuyer.com

i second a readyNAs too i have one of those :) with 2 1tb drives raided :)

Cheers blokes; my Netgear ReadyNAS arrived yesterday, the ebuyer offer had ended but found another place doing the same offer with 2 x 1 TB drives. About £180 all in.

Thanks again for all the musings.

What OS have yo got it running then? I'm not playing content directly from the box, I'll be streaming to my ps3, laptop and possibly wii (when I get round to cracking it).

I've not settled on one at the moment mate as one of the two drives that Scan sent me was DOA so now it's an RMA job :(

FreeNAS8 was ok but missed too many features I've become used to because of my ReadyNAS. It's also got a lot of installation annoyances, like you can't use the space on a hard disk if you install it to that disk and if you install it on a USB stick it uses exactly 1GB of space no matter the size of the stick. This means you can't add packages to it (i.e. run more stuff by hand) because the space is capped even if you have an 8GB stick.

Ubuntu was actually running on it fairly nicely. That's probably a better bet for you dude as it can take care of a lot of things itself (updates), there's a big community to draw on for support, it's got a GUI so you can login remotely using VNC and PS3 media server runs on Linux (i'm still running tests in virtualbox at home to see if I can get it running on FreeBSD/FreeNAS using the emulation).

250gb and 1gb RAM was the model on offer with the cash back.

So as I intend to use the box solely as a file server for now, I've gone the freenas 8 route.

After some talking with meg about what he'd done, this seemed like the easiest option for now.

The box is lovely, so easy to set up. My only bug bear right now is that I only have a 100mbit switch working, and while it gives me slightly more speed than going via the sky router, it's not the 1gb I need to transfer the gig or so worth of media over :/

I have mine running server 2008 and it also runs a virtual XP machine which I use for Torrents. It really is a very capable machine for £130

Stupid question but why would you run a virtual machine for Torrents?

The QNAP was recommended to me as well, but its a lot more expensive because you have to buy the drives separately.

As for the NetGear, I'm not sure 1TB is going to be enough (I've got about 750GB's worth of external drives and they're getting pretty full).
