I've said it before and here I go again.... There should be a test before you can drive on the motorway, Caravans should be banned from all motorways ( If your dragging a mobile home behind you why are you in a rush to get anywhere?) and the speed limit should be 90mph.

I spend a lot of my working day on motorways and have had many a police car pass me whilst doing 90 and not once have they tried to tell me off.

Having said that i did get two fines for doing 80 on an empty dual carriage way.

I've overtaken the Police doing 90 mph (according to my speedo) on the M3 quite regularly. I love all the other fuckers on the road that pull up behind the Police, clears the road for me to go straight past :)

Overtaking fine, but a constant speed of 90? Well it's your money and your license I suppose.

Indeed it is. I regularly do high speed down the M3. Police or not. I've been motorway driving since I was 21 (yes, that is 21 years ago). Not had any form of ticket since I was 17. I believe I have experience in this matters.

I'm a boring bastard. I obey the speed limit :( I value my licence too much I guess.

i have no problem with wankers who cant drive killing themselves.
i do however object to them killing other people. had people doing over 100 when visibility was down to 30 feet - all the bikers were stopped under the bridges in the downpour, about 18 months ago that was.

end of the day:
If its an empty road, and your only going to kill yourself, knock yourself out
if its busy, or stop/start then obv they need to crack down more - but thats common sense policing not "guidelines" and "targets for arrests" so...

Cars and bikes have different criteria for being able to drive safely in different conditions though. First sign of rain and bikers will go slow, cars do not have to. (Forget any speed measurements)

granted
but when everyone else on the road is alternating lanes and doing about 40 so people can see , and keeping massive distance, is not really time to be doing about 100 is it ;)

common sense ftw !

People have the mentality, i'm doing the speed limit why should I move.

But they seem to forget, it's not the fucking speed limit lane, it's the over taking lane. I use to tail gate, beep and flash (If I have to) to force them over, I know it's not right but I wanna get the fuck home and they are not in the right either .....

And don't get me started on people that pull out and don't shoulder check for bikes ...

By the rules they are correct tho aren't they? If they are keeping the speed limit you will break the law by overtaking them? :)

Altho I agree

lol gimly you really are a bit silly arent you

just cos you may not drive within the limits of the law, doesnt mean you're allowed to hassle other people

If you're not on the left most lane and you could be then you're doing it wrong.

If you don't know the Highway Code you shouldn't be on the bloody road.

I failed my first test for driving in the right hand lane on a dual carriageway.

I'd not want to put that to the test with police though - I was under the impression that their guidelines (note guidelines, before arguing) were 10% of the speed limit + 1 is considered an acceptable variance.
Close.
Speed limit + 10% + 2mph is defined as the ACPO enforcement level guidelines.

Page 3 of this document outlines the thresholds.
http://www.acpo.police.uk/documents/uniformed/2010/201004UNSAC01.pdf

I've driven past police cars at 78mph and not had a problem.
Interesting fact... every single car speedometer over-reads the actual speed being travelled by about 5%. They're not allowed to under-read, so the car manufacturers make sure they over-read. Compare your speedometer reading with a GPS reading and you'll see the difference.

Surely that depends on the road? If you're driving alone and there's no one in front or behind then without a speedo it would be hard to gauge your speed, and if you matched speed with the car ahead 9/10 they're speeding anyway?

if your driving your own car, or one you know, ie not rented etc
you should be able to tell roughly how fast your going anyway

From my experience in driving Mercs (which is only a 313 Sprinter and some other saloon thing), they're bloody ambitious with their speedos. Sat navs and those silly signs that tell you your speed are normally a lot lower than what the vehicle reckons :p

I agree with mabs. If you're driving your own car then you should know. I know by the engine sound what speed I'm doing.

Oh I'm not having ago at your speeding mate, 90 is fine on the motorway, all I was saying is that if you drive over the limit you have to accept any potential consequences if you get stopped by a copper having a bad day.

Absolutely. It's the only thing I do knowingly that is breaking the law.

Actually does purposely paying your Council tax 1 week later than required (on purpose) the same? :)

actual individual speed is more a factor of the speed of the traffic
doing 90 when everyone else is doing 75-80 is a lot safer than those (old) people you see doing 55 :\

My point wasn't about safety - but I agree with you on people who drive too slowly, very dangerous.

The thing that annoys me most is people who join dual carriageways or motorways at low speeds. You should be accelerating to join, not sticking to 30 ffs.

Lorries and speed limited vehicles shouldn't be allowed to overtake. Caravans however should be banned.
