i thought well u do have a load of good points, but then i got a pc games mag for the holidays with 2 cd roms with 19 playable demo's, most if not all of the games are gash, a few of the demo's crashed my machine, the others games that did work that i thought would be fun were very very poor. thus a good game is a good game even if you have played loads of games and a gash game is a gash game even if your new to gaming. problem is if somebody is new to gaming it will probable take them 15 secs longer to say this game is gash.

While I agree with you that a gash game is a gash game (whether its the 1st game you've played or the 100th), imo, having played games for 20 years, this has always been the case (ie the majority of games output are shite with a few gems). Some of this is down to the individual (what games they like - I dont like rpgs for example, probably because I dont currently have the time to get involved with them, so any rpg on a demo cd is not likely to interest me, no matter how good it is in its particular genre.

I dont think this was the thrust of that article though. I think it was referring to the constant hankering for the past that goes on, particularly with people who have been around the fps scene for a while, and I agree with most of the points they make. I myself find that nothing these days provides me with the excitment and terror that Doom inspired, I can still remember the first time I tripped a secret passage and two cyberdemons came out - I nearly wet myself with fright. I just dont get that these days, not because games are worse but because I have seen it all before. The articles conclusion is basically that older gamers should try to keep an open mind when looking at new stuff, and try to remember that there is a whole new generation of gamers out there who have never played Doom, and so think the latest fps, be it UT, Q3 or HL, is the best thing since sliced bread. Instead atm, what we get is x game sucks, its not as good as y game, or even on Ra3 servers these days, Ra3 suxx, Ra2 r00lz or whatever. I think if you had someone today who had played not 1 game, and you showed them both Doom and say Half-life, not one would choose to play Doom.

I think this is the same tho in everything - although the new porsche carrera is undoubtedly a far better car than the old one, Porsche fanatics still say the old one which had a shite gearchange, was very tailhappy and shite in the wet, r00lz the current namby-boy car. Or the Busby babes would hockey the current man-utd team etc etc
