Off Kimbles wikipedia entry:

Civil litigation and controversies

In December 2011, Schmitz's Megaworld...released its "Megaupload Song" promotional music video, which featured Kanye West, will.i.am, Jamie Foxx, Sean "Diddy" Combs, Alicia Keys, Chris Brown and more lauding the service.

Universal Music Group (UMG) responded by using the DMCA takedown process to have the clip removed from YouTube and other sites. Schmitz accused UMG of sending "illegitimate takedown notices", since UMG did not own the song in question, and Megaupload went on to file a lawsuit against UMG.

A statement released by UMG claimed that a special arrangement exists between UMG and YouTube which allows UMG to take down any videos featuring their artists, regardless of copyright status. This claim was later explicitly denied by YouTube, which has since reinstated the video.

Be careful who you bash. I think they're all a shower of disease-ridden excrement spreaders. The big media companies are orders of magnitude worse than fatboy..

BTW Spotify, if you didn't know, are the biggest cunts in the music business right now.

They pay so little it's a joke.

If you want to earn £2,500 you have to have a track listened to.... 750,000 times. So those who have a go at people who pirate and then use spotify to listen to everything are just as bad.

Except...its not really Spotify's call. That's the model they negotiated with the labels, because that's the basic model the labels have come up with, not Spotify. I've seen this process from the inside in the last couple of years, having launched a music streaming service myself. NB. that 750K figure applies to streams under the free ad version and after the labels and the collection agencies have had their pound of flesh. Its a bit better under paid, and a bit better again under mobile, although I'll freely admit its still pretty tiny. And at least Spotify pay something.

Not seen the actual video. But the link you gave said this:

This does make you question why an artist would say something to camera and not expect it to be used, though
...

I'm presuming they were all filmed saying they use megaupload?

After watching that I'm inclined to think that most of the artists in that clip who now say they've not given their permission are having their arms twisted...

Yes I know it's illegal, so's sharing music and video, but it's pretty well destroyed the music business and the movie business was next, that's why they acted.

Give over, the music industry is fine. It'd like you to believe it isn't, but really, it is.

LOL , Simon IS the music business and even he's on a slide.
Shayne Ward number one 570,000
Little Mix number one 210,000
Total sales and a good percentage at 99p, barely pays the production costs.

Makes you realise just how low the music biz has gone downhill.
Those figures are considered good sales these days. The Human League's "Don't You Want Me" sold 1million in less than than 6 weeks.

Only if you believe the bullshit X-Factor spouts.

Go research the acts he's responsible for: it'll surprise you how few and how shit and insignificant they are. Just because he's rich doesn't mean he's an all-powering don.

fileserve and filesonic have basically rendered their own services useless following megaupload's take down, you can now only download files you've uploaded yourself, what's the point in that?

good thing i cancelled my premium account there last week. sounds like my 4 years of paying for premium accounts on such host-sites is over, off to usenet i go :p

He's not the music business we want, but he is one of the biggest hitters and when you can get to number one with sales figures like that you know the charts at least are dire, you only need 2,500 sales to get in the top 40 now, two and a half thousand!!!
It's not just illegal downloading of course, it's the availability on so many formats for free.
You young-uns will never know the excitement of waiting for a single to come out, then walking to the shop to buy it and having to walk back to your player to hear it and that being the only option to own it...
worth a million free downloads that.

You seem to think a lot of us are a lot younger than we actually are, just because we point out you're wrong a lot. :(

It is, I get paid to spot errors and inconsistencies.

And then I do it for free on here. I think of it as charity work.

I need you to reproduce everything you spotted perfectly a hundred times in a row before submitting the sheets to the devs Glenn. Don't make me tell them you've been sneaking red bull from the private developer's fridge again

Job, you're missing the fact there's so much more choice out there these days. Access to music used to be very restricted. Now you have instant access to whatever music you want and the money gets spread around a hell of a lot more.
I'd like to see some figure that reflect the total world wide turnover of the music industry.
You need fewer sales to get into the charts these days because there's a greater choice.

I'd say more like swamped.
Well lets have a non scientific poll, do you download legally or illegally?
I for one have never bought a single MP3 in my life, I simply wouldn't bother to go through the process
of registering a card or even connecting my account in any way to any download site when I can get it for FREE with no strings attached.
Downloading off Youtube is the way to go and will they go after them..I doubt it.

I find buying stuff(never bought mp3s, i buy CDs if i want music) easier then pirating things. Want skyrim? Ok, launch steam, click buy, done, or just order my games home.

With pirating you'd have to do this and that and find the right version, trot through the garbage and avoid the pitfalls and so on. Too much work :p

I would say pirated games often work quicker out the box (so to speak) than bought ones due to being cracked and having wanky DRM removed or circumvented.

Yeah, it probably is faster if you've got your systems set up and been doing it for a while(or at all), just seems like a lot of hassle to save a nights worth of beermoney. I'd rather eat less for a week, which ironically is handled by a good game :D

TV shows are a bit different though as there's little if any way to see good shows if your country ain't broadcasting them.
