Gave it a go back in open beta and tried again this time, I really can't get past the first few levels, the game just feels hopelessly dull. Combat is clumsy at best or plain out totally random and not making any sense at all, quests(atleast the ones I tried) where not any different from WoW's quest, only they lacked any sort of reward making them worthwhile other than XP. From what I read the PvP system is just wank, hell it's bad compared to WoW's pisspoor excuse for PvP and that's saying something(although, Blizzard can still try and aren't limited to lore that is outside their hands).

As many people have already said, it's a poor mans WoW really and only 'beat' the giant in looking pretty, but WoW's graphic was never meant to be 'stunning' it was meant to portray the art of Warcraft III.

and to replying WoW bashers, yes I'm a fanboy to the in my opinion best MMORPG out there at the moment, and im very sceptical to how WAR will stand up against Wrath of the Lich King. The sad truth really is that MMORPG's going mainstream means that games like DAoC will die. They cater to a far too small crowd to be successful which in turn means that games like WoW and LoTR will be the future.

actually, games like WoW have a far higher risk of eating up themself then any of the other games that isn't a pure copy of eachoher.

blizzard made shit to easy with TBC, and will make it even MORE easy with Wraith of the lich king.

i have my doubts on blizzards survivability with this "strategy". think they are working on bursting their own bubble.

Actually making things more accessable gained them 1.5 million costumers so far.

ofc. but for how long?

not saying easy is ALL bad, but they need some kind of challenge that keep ppl occupied in the long run. and it just doesn't have it anymore.

none of the "high end" instances are especially challenging. even a half arsed raidguild can do those with a few tries.

i mean, the hardcore raid guilds are already doing the 25 man instances with fewer people fgs just to get SOME challenge.

in the end all they will have is millions of 10 year olds that want everything yesterday, and blizzard will give it to them.

Is anybody still playing this?

I really enjoyed it when I played, not the grind, but the chapter quests etc.
However my guild folded and so I had nobody to group with.

I have the lifetime deal but havent played for coupla months - I dont like the direction its heading personally - lots of new timesinks but no particular reason to do them compared to existing gear.

I enjoyed the PvP on both sides for a while but Codemasters are far worse than Mythic when it comes to game balance - everything they add is broken or has to be nerfed lol!

The housing addition was probably the worst I have seen in any MMO - theres absolutely no reason to have a house as you still have to go to town to do anything - craziness :p

You know its a TURBINE and NOT Codemasters that are the Developers for this, Codemasters are the Publishers + Hosts for the Europe side of LOTRO... much in the same way as GOA are for Mythic.

The games got some changes coming soon, big ones. Stay tuned.

Tilda, one of the biggest guilds on LOTRO is Aeon Knights, very friendly group always running events, if your interested drop me a PM.

Doh - aye - shows how long I've been away :)

Nah - they have done so badly so far that theres no real hope of them suddenly raising the bar.

One of their big problems is their slow reaction to major issues and if its a minor issue - good luck :p

I imagine this is due to lack of staff due to poor sales/retention of subscribers - once a game starts going down the pan like this theres probably no way back...

They have made their money already from the thousands of mugs who bought this piece of mediocrity at release. Shame really, it might have been a good rpg, but should never have been made into an mmorpg.

Still think it's a reasonably decent game, but in mmorpg terms it's a dog.

Aye and it taught me a lesson - beware MMO's that offer lifetime deals - it can mean that they expect people to leave fairly quickly so will make more from a one off payment than via subscription.

Thats an awfull business model from the customer point of view...

Absolutely agree. I think in their defence they probably weren't being this cut-throat when they thought of the lifetime sub, more of a way to get past the fact that a big obstacle to attracting potential players is the monthly subscription than to cash-in at launch. Either way, the end result is still the same and I for one will also be wary of any offers like this in the future.

The lifetime subscription was used to encourage people to play the game and keep a healthy subscription base, which it has. I forget how much the life time subscription is, but its still well worth the money even if you only play it casual / on-and-off for several months.

Don't forget it took some MMO's a lot of time to add new content, LOTRO has already released several large updates adding new content for FREE.

If you haven't tried LOTRO and got to 50 (or made a decent attempt), then I'd give the game a shot. Hell, even if you got the 14 days free and got to Level 10, go try Monster Play.

LOTRO is not a 'WoW Beater' - but its just a bloody good game to have a laugh and play Casual.

yes and much, if not most of it, is bug fixes/general tweaks. yes they have added lots of new things to. but it most certainly is not as much as it seems.

i'm still waiting for the day when the LM's bear will actually be a usefull offtank rather then the cute (but useless) fluffy furball it is now.

you know something is wrong when the so called tank pet dies WAY faster then the cloth wearing CASTER that commands it.

They did a lot of class Modifications during Book 11 for the Loremaster, have you tried since then? Book 12 is going to see some tweaks as well, but mostly that update will see updates to the Guardian, the Burglar and the Champion.

I have a 50 - GM in 3 trades - have full teal gear - reasonable pvp rank plus a bunch of monster chars with reasonable rank and most maps on tier 2/3 - game still sucks :p

In particular pvp is one area where new content has had a disastrous effect on gameplay and has shown their incompetance most blatantly.

Starman, I am. My subscription just finally went through yesterday. What server were you thinking of, perhaps we could make a leveling duo?

Tried a trial version, but was too WoW like for my taste, so I could just as well stay with WoW :)

Thats like comparing Tekken to Street fighter, Half Life 2 to Quake 4, or Gran Tourismo to Need For speed.

Wish this whole, "Its like WoW/ is it as good as WoW" thing would stop :p

Btw im on Snowbourn as either Dryden, Zalera, Sparda. Look me up :)

I'm on the free trial at the moment, and looks pretty good so far. For all those saying it's a wow clone, WAY off mark... It may use some of the familiar controls, interface elements and such, but the gameplay itself has a lot more to it.
The environment is richer, encounters with mobs are played out well, the mobs are in locations that they look like they belong... and they drop what you'd expect too... no crafting patterns dropping off a spider for example... or at least not that i've seen.... basically, humanoids for money, weapons, armour and the like, animals for crafting materials.
The classes don't have quite as much variety, at least up to lvl 10 anyway, but it makes up for it by producing a more detailed environment, a lot of well written quests, and a graphics engine that's so far beyond wow, yet loads so much quicker.
I'm not saying that it's a wow beater or anything, i've not played it anywhere near enough to make such a judgement, but it's certainly got a lot of differences.

oh yeah, I'm playing on Snowbourn, under the name of Syrwyn

thats only because u need so many addons to work properly in WoW :) load the game up without them and its just as fast as LOTRO :)

then u need to defrag ur PC a tad ;)

coz my old PC sure didnt loaded up WoW any slower whenever i did a reinstall and booted upp without any addons then it did LOTRO. and now with my new PC it actually loads WoW up faster WITH addons then LOTRO for some oddish reason.

tho i still cant run EQ2 on max settings smooth FFS! :eek7:
