Guys,

Well, it probably was... but there were most likely loads of them doing this, every1 associates hacking to be single peopl... its not, its a community, larger than DAOC, probably larger than the christian church :p...

Think of the damage to this hacker community if their mums saw the following headline in a newspaper.

"Hacker found Hacked to death"

Or "Script kiddie now Crypt kiddie"

they would soon have the whole community in bed by 8:upyours:

Yeah. Pulling off a DOS attack on a website is one thing - theres very little they can do except trace the attack after its started - but a DOS attack on an online multiplayer game SHOULD be much harder to pull off...

If you offer a service you are vunerable to DOS attacks. You _can_ avoid some of them but packet spoofing if easy and security is hard to implement without serious slowdown in service.

I have one solution, just give me there IP address (or as far as you've got with your trace). Give me your logs, I will find the hackers (and vunerable boxes that have been used for this, in my opinion to have a vunerable box is as bad as being a hacker!!!) and I will wipe then off the face of the earth!!! I (and also a couple of friends) specialise in network security. We'll spike the dossers, there probably only about 10yrs old anyway.

In the meantime I'm off to see if anyones bragging about it on the hacking IRC channels!

One hacker can gain control of any number of compromised boxes and launch multiple attacks from any of those boxes.

At the end of the day you shouldn't be allowed on the internet if you don't know how to secure your machine against attack, you are just creating a hacking tool by now running a firewall.

Embattle - go back to spamming BW forums with the usual bollocks along with Stu.

If these people want to complain what the fuck is it to do with you. yeah some are whining and going overboard but they're pissed off - its Good Friday ffs and they can't play their crack addict game.

Fanboys, trolls, llamas - all have a good easter anyway.

Jesus, Acron that's two banal posts you've made

of course he would be pissed off had his computer exploded but the point is the problem wasn't at his end, it was at GOA's. We hadn't been given any information so Zug was quite entitled to rant and get pissed at GOA. He was mainly ranting about the lack of customer service, ie keeping your customers updated. He STILL has a valid argument here.

Point 2...How can YOU be relaxed and annoyed at the same time?

Make sense man, and if you can't make sense then STFU.

Pay 'n' play... play?...

I agree in hindsight I admit that we were a little harsh with them last night, but at the end of the day the fact that they didn't tell us what was going on brought it upon themselves. Look at the support they've got now!!! If they'd said that lastnight then they would have had people begging to help track these fuckers (kiddies) down!!!

Just ban any IP that resolves to China for a start. Then implement a "honey trap".

Personal firewalls are a little sucky but better than nothing and they will keep *most* hackers out (mainly the script kiddies). A determined hacker can get into most systems. The ideal solutions is a *nix box sitting on your connection running a correctly configured Bastille Linux or something.

A good solution is to buy a hardware firewall. Watchguard do a good one (called Soho) that costs about £100-£200. It works very well!

Most hacks are coming from asia these days, scary but true.

A honey trap is a nice tool to implement. It creates a virual server (exactly the same as the box there trying to hack) and lets the hacker do as he pleases to that virtual box. The hacker thinks he's causing trouble. All he's doing is hanging himself as he is being logged and traced. You can also lock hackers terminals up with this sort of thing.

Other forms of defence are to implemement software that logs all system changes (mod dates, checksums etc.) so if you know you've been hacked you can see where they've been, and remove aqny malicious code they might have left.

And you call my posts banal??

In response to point 2, I am annoyed at arrogant pricks who seem completely oblivious to the facts about what has happened and thus continue to rant and rave at GOA even though GOA are working their arses off to fix this problem for YOU! This relaxes me because, rather than saying 'Fuck it, we'll do it tomorrow', GOA got right down to the problem and are currently fixing it.

Zug's argument suggests that GOA are not providing us with a good customer service. Well, in my opinion, it's quite reverse. As I said, they are exerting themselves to fix all the problems at hand. There is a small lack of information but at the end of the day, who cares what the problem is as long as they get it fixed? You're looking for an excuse to bitch at GOA - just jumping on the band wagon. Just take a step back, put yourself in their shoes.

If this attack is a DDoS then only an army of hardware firewalls would have stopped the attack.

Resolving technical issues and customer support are two entirely different subjects. Have you ever worked in an IT support environment?

I appreciate that there techies are working realy hard and full respect is due. However there customer support (some school leaver on the end of the phone) is non existant. They need mechanisms of feedback going both ways that doesn't rely on a buitin board that's not officialy connected with the game. Most people don't know what a BB is lat alone how to use one.

Agreed. But we don't know how many people are working there. There may only be a couple of techies there after 8pm, when the attacks occured. It may take the both of them to fix the problem and leave no time for public updating.

EDIT: And yes, I worked at IT support for an insurance company.

If you offer a service to the internet then you are vunerable. The Ack/Syn hack is one of many and simple to do. The only way to secure your machine is to unplug it from the network, turn if off and burn it! How would at there end help? They have to let thru legit traffic (us) don't they? Well all it takes is someone to spoof a legit connection using a syn/ack hack and spawn a few million of those request hacks to bring a server down. It's soo easy it's scary!!!

No offence intended there m8, but these are opvious points. A techie shouldn't have to have any contact with the end user. There not designed for it ;-)

If there are only two people there then we should have every right to jump up and down. They *should* have someone there who's job it is to mediate between us and the techies. And this person should be there when there is trouble. Not some faceless website that's down most of the time.
