#quake2.uk may not be advertised on game/barrysworld anymore, but IRC probably is. #quake2.uk then seems like the logical place to go for quake2 chat... you'd think.

A swear filter would prevent words like:

Cunt
Fuck
Wank
Tit
Bollocks
Shit
Scunthorpe

from showing.

Bring back Bodhi FFS!

*sigh*. From the Ts&Cs (again):

"Standards of acceptable Content may vary slightly depending on where you are on GAME.NET Multiplayer, the type of game you are playing and the expectations of the community. Some game play and chat rooms may involve use of stronger language than others, including mild expletives. However, strong vulgar language, crude or explicit sexual references, and defamatory comments constitute inappropriate Content on GAME.NET Multiplayer. If you believe your comments (or the comments of others) fall into a "grey area", please use your best judgment. Don't post messages in Forums or Chat that you wouldn't say to someone's face. GAME.NET makes the final determination about whether Content is objectionable or not. This determination is in our sole discretion, and is final."

So is bad language objectionable or not? If so, you ought to put a swear filter on surely? Otherwise, as long as I've known these forums bad language has been tolerated completely and utterly. Hence the lack of a swear filter.

So where do we stand?

I'd say that at the end of the day the people who own and pay for the forum bandwidth have the final say on who can and can't use it, for whatever reason they like.

Nothing stops you starting your own forum if you don't like those rules.

The irc thing is a bit of a nonsense as game can have no control whatsoever over quakenet, which even has the channel #vulva*.

I suppose they could pull the plug on the barrysworld irc servers if they were concerned about that, but it's really a non-argument in this thread.

There is a certain, 'change is bad' attitude in here which is perfectly understandable, but there is also a blind optimism that BW can continue as before. Maybe it is bad that it has to change, but it was really a case of change or cease to exist, so on that basis, change it has to be.

Some might say that the change means that it has ceased to exist, fair enough but bleating on and on and on about it isn't going to get you anywhere.

Ono's idea of a swear filter may well be the way ahead, (sorry mank), but then at least there would be no grey area.

*#vulva is a homage to GDW's word substitution technique.

I'm not saying that it's not upto them to make a decision, I'd just like to know where we all stand frankly. Judging by recent actions they're cracking down on the undesirables to promote GAME.net as a friendly nice place to be at the expense of doing away with a few luxuries we once had. Unless I get banned and/or they put a swear filter on, I'll continue reading the forums no matter how many people get banned.

I'm not trying to start a revolution here.

They got banned.

Thats it.

Its really quite pointless going on and on as to the why's about it all.

There have been plenty of warnings about what is acceptable and what isnt.

If you just carry regardless of the warnings then you've only got yourself to blame if you end up being banned.

It's not always about little Jimmy. Plenty of quite liberally-minded adults find swearing offensive. I mean, I do in a way, not because it's offensive as such but just because it's irritating and unimaginative.

If I thought anyone would I'd change it.

And don't start accusing me of homophobia. I'm happy to admit if it wasn't for CJRavey there wouldn't be a gayer straight bloke in the world than me!

No, one who says "hey shut up, if you don't like it go elsewhere". Which completely and utterly misses the point.

The point is there are rules....if you break the rules then you have to accept the consequences.

You cant break rules and get away with it.

Thats just life

We're not 'cracking down' because we think it will make the place 'nice and friendly'. If you look at the context of the bans that have happened, they have usually been for way language has been used, not necessarily the swear words themselves. There's a huge difference between dropping the occasional (and I do mean occasional) expletive into your conversation and swearing at someone. Its unfortunate that the internet fosters an attitude amongst some people that they think they can say things online to people that they wouldn't dream of doing in the real world, because a. it would be extremely rude, and b. they'd probably get a good kicking.

The reason we don't have things on here like swear filters is that you're not children and people shouldn't need this stuff explained to them and enforced with a technical straightjacket (and swear filters don't work anyway).

'Get off me you bummer' is a quote from Spaced, the finest sitcom in the world. An ironic sig choice fo JD at the moment, but a fine quote...:)

You seemed to have completely missed the point too.

And DaGaffer, we know why they were banned, it's just that Jonny Darko asked us to mind the language. No one has ever moaned about language before, just abusiveness. That's why I asked.
