The first book's a bit arse but from 2 onwards it really picks up. 3 and 4 were stunning, and it's been getting considerably darker as Harry (and his readership) grows up as well.

Umm, and to your other point, that's just tosh. The media hasn't made Rowling the success she is. They became interested after she sold seventy gazillion books, not before.

Yes they're not the best books in the world but they're lots of fun to read and I can still enjoy them again (I re-read them all last week). I first started reading the potter books after getting tired of reading portrait of an artist which was kinda heavy going it was much needed light relief.

HP is mainstream - though I found them (other than other book/movie adaptations) to be very close to the books.

And the casting was very well done.
