how do you set up your computer so you and a friend can play over the internet only

is there a way that just me and a friend can play counterstrike or quake 3 over the internet so that i am hosting game and he comes and join it . please help

LAN would be your best bet, but if you can't get access to one, then I think you'll just have to go public (its more fun that way anyways )

Use Gamespy to find a totally empty server and hope no one else joins in your little soiree.
