They are doing a great job of bringing the books to life. One of the best jobs i have seen, with that being said it does not and can never live up to your imagination. I read a book called the Dreamers Cat where they captured films from Humans imagination and until something like that exists Films and TV will only ever be a best alternative.

Yeah they are doing a splendid job. The first series was so close to the book.
I dunno, I think because I read all of them in one go, I'm Game of Throned out?

Sansa is MEANT to be boring....IMO she's cast perfectly....as is so much of it actually. Joffrey is an arrogant twat, the spider is as slimy as he should be, tyrion is just BRILLIANT, as is Arya....I'm loving it....and I have a small crush on Daenerys :)

Mycenae I know Sansa is meant to be boring. That's the point! I read all about her boring story throughout the books so I cringe every time it's her scene in the TV show.
Many of the characters (Tyrion, Cersai, Jaime, Arya, Eddard) are perfect, however a few are not, which is a shame. I think if they did such a great job on those characters, what happened when they chose Craster (sp?), Joffrey (to me he looks annoying, but that's about it), Melisandre, Davos (ok only seen him in one episode but he looks like all the other generic people. He was different in the books due to his background so I expected to see someone sticking out a bit). Oh and I'm disappointed with the make up on the Hound. In the book people are scared to look at him. In the show it looks like he got a bad case of sun burn!

Everything Bahumat says rings true with how I feel. The Hound is another example of a character that's pretty much a shadow compared to what I always imagined. Same with the Dire Wolves. Like soze says, can't beat your own imagination - but tis a shame :) It's a well done show though. I just wish they'd got the director and costume director that did Thor in - they'd have pulled the armour off :D

If I remember right we only got a Season 2 because how much Season 1 cost to make. The viewer numbers in S1 were not what they hoped for so there was talk of it ending with S1. So the new actors may be related to costs, seeing the girl from Skins as Gillie though made me horny I loved that crazy bitch. But the good news is the numbers are double this year plus the Sky Atlantic money mean S3 should be happening :)

Unfortunately I don't think "people who read the books" is a big enough audience for HBO to sink so much money in to. As such there will be some massaging (I'm sure Jon Snow was 14 when he went to the wall...he doesn't look 14...) and plenty of exposition, usually done in front of or just to the side of some soft porn and/or gratuitous swinging cock. I think the massive advantage they have over something like Lord of the Rings is that they have the author there to answer questions, work with the casting people and so on. As such I tend to think that this is likely to be much closer to GRRM's vision of the story (in terms of people, places and so on) than Peter Jackson's (pretty damned good) Trilogy.

I think start to finish S1 was awesome and I'm sure S2 will be even better (not started it yet, watching S1 again on Blu-Ray with the missus). I've always been a massive Fantasy Fiction reader and because of S1 my girlfriend has read the entire Song of Ice and Fire and is planning to start Wheel of Time (poor girl!) and maybe some Ian Irvine. :)

Actually that's all completely wrong. It was renewed for a second season days after the first episode of season 1 aired. They spent so much money building sets that a second season was pretty much confirmed anyway just for accounting reasons. The fact viewer ratings increased every episode all through S1, S2 ratings have been even higher and it's sold a shit load of DVD & BluRay's mean I wouldn't be surprised of a S3 confirmation any day now.

Incidentally the Blu-Ray has the best picture/sound quality of any transfer I've seen and some really good extras as well. No point, just saying. :)

Finished book 2 and ordered the rest. Though I can't wait (the ending of book 2 has far too many cliff hangers) so got the ebook from the usual places to keep me going until they arrive.

Just saying what i remember reading which was pretty much the Viewer numbers were disappointing for the cost of the show and that it was not renewed because its a great show but because they spent so much on S1. I do not want it to be cancelled just saying it was not that big of a show in the States as it is here.

Totally agree, most Americans cannot read or have never seen a book :p

That would be about half the audience for a US episode. I find that doubtful.

It's not a network show, it's on HBO. Ratings are almost irrelevant as all they really care about are subscriptions. 2 or 3 million is good ratings for them.

It was well publicised at the time, and it was only the first showing the total viewing numbers were about the same after the repeats and Tivo ect. It was all on the TV Line site.

They spat their dummies out good and proper after the event. I am not sure it made a lot of difference to viewing figures though. More tears to follow I imagine.

Edit, watch the spoilers please :) someone ruined two quite major storyline elements in book 2 and 3 recently on here.

Are those figures just the first airing then? Or did you ignore what I said later. Not really sure why you have such an issue but i will give in. You are correct GoT is the best thing to ever happen to HBO!1

I totally agree that GoT is the best recent thing HBO have done and the only issue I had is that almost everything you said was wrong. Welcome to FH, pedant central :p

I read the remainder of this thread and though I find the ins and outs of their viewing figures very interesting, all it really did was make me think of was how buff Daenerys is all over again.

Then I thought about Irri.

I have to go now.

Edit: I am, however, oddly disappointed that we didn't get to see Sean Bean's cock, as we seem to have seen just about everyone else's.
