France have put a ban on burkas. If caught wearing one you get a fine. I'm hoping they adopt it here.

Thoughts?

Don't really care what anyone else wears tbh. I'm more offended seeing men in flared jeans with the elastic around the ankles!

Well, it kind of goes against the whole "we're allowed to be dicks" thing that the anti-religion crowd keeps pushing.

It's not like it's harming anyone if they wear it :eek6:

Well, it kind of is. There's lots of evidence to suggest women are coerced by their husbands/families into wearing it for a start. Then there's the simple public order/security aspect. I like the joke a British moslem comedienne made; "all my French cousins where the Burkha, saves everyone buying a bus pass". How can you have a civil society where people walk around in masks? If I walk into a bank wearing a motorcycle helmet, I will (rightly) be asked to take it off, but a woman in a Niqab doesn't have to? How is that right?

*edit* Oh, and there is NO specific injunction in the Koran demanding women cover their faces; it only talks about dressing "modestly".

Much as I dislike it and realise it's in no small part about Muslim men oppressing women, I can't see how you can ban what people want to wear.

Are they banning ninjas ?

Actually I just read about this a little. It's not exactly a ban is it.

I stand by the Ninjas comment. Anybody asking a ninja to remove his head-dress in the queue at Barclays should expect dual-katana-decapitation !!

PErhaps they should change it to "if required, show your face to prove ID".

Fair on either side that way.

Show me a civil society and i'll talk about the effect of masks on it :p

FYI; demanding ninjas to remove mask is racist.

Are you assuming that there are no Ninja's masquerading as Muslim women? Clearly you and your unsuspecting ways will be the first to be eliminated when the Ninja's rise up.

That's not actually too far from what it is. Depends how it is enforced though.

Yeap. If it's a full on ban, it's your basic "over the top action". If it's just to prove someones ID, fair enough.

More funny watching someone wearing one stick a computer up it.

That's pretty much what the law says. Its just that in day to day life, the only people it would affect are women who wear burkhas (and ninjas).

There's only like 2,000 people that wear them in France. Seems a bit like a waste of time.

Arguably it's easier to 'ban' it now then before it becomes widespread.

My opinion on Burka's and the rest of them is that if a woman wants to wear it for THEIR religious reasons, let them, they're not causing any problems by merely following their religion.. But if its enforced by their husband and it's not their choice, then it should be banned, trickly sitaution, it'll be a bit unethical to walk around going, hey ma'am, does your husband force you to wear that, because even if they do, they'll say no.. so hey... I'm not sure..

Should they be banned whilst driving? - Yes.

Well it's fair enough. You can get fined for showing too much skin in some arab/muslim countries. Why not flip it on them?

For ID purposes you could legislate that if the face is covered then the boobs must be free for identification. That would work.

Can you imagine it though? Busy street in the middle of Nice, one person is wearing a burka. Random pedestrian rings police "Ou le merde! Burka, en la Nice Street!!" Police replies "Moaning, we are on le way"

Probably not going to happen.
