Idiotic to pay that much for deliberately-out-of-focus pictures. Sorry, I mean abstract. ;)

That said, it's definitely on my "if I had £10k of disposable to blow on camera stuff" list. Along with the 85mm f1.2 and the TS-E 24mm. And that sweet 200-400 f4 as soon as it lands.

OK, £15k. :(

I was going to post that tonight, looks absolutely fecking awesome, bloody marvellous lens. It's sharper than the 24mm TS-E II and it's a zoom, like a bag of primes.

There won't a good price until it's about a grand* cheaper than it currently is. :)

*ok, £500 cheaper

The point is that it's too expensive for what it is. It can be the sharpest, most spunk-tastic lens ever but it still doesn't have IS and it's still "only" a 24-70 zoom. It stinks of Canon milking the minted early adopters.

When the fuck do you ever need IS on such short focal lengths? I've never ever encountered it as an issue on any lens or camera. Yes it'd be "nice" but at those lengths if you need IS you probably have Parkinsons.

Is it really too expensive considering the claims that it's as good as or better than similarly expensive fixed focal length primes? As you say, it's "only 24-70mm," probably the most used and important focal lengths for the majority of photowerk.

Horses for courses Wazz but the 24-70mm is a very popular wedding lens. Flash photography is usually banned in churches and during ceremonies where light is very poor. Having four stops of IS at your disposal could be critical in these low light locations.

Indeed. IS has a lot more to do with being able to handhold in low light than focal length.

@wazz This is why a lot of shooters prefer the 24-105 IS - its one whole stop slower, but it's got four (I think..) stops of IS not to mention the extra reach. It's also cheaper and lighter than the 24-70.

You pick your tool for the job, but you could get a 24-70mm MK1 and 24-105mm IS for less than the MK2.

Personally I enjoy f/2.8 and IS.

GUFAW.

But I have a 5d3. High ISO performance is fantastic, so IS means little for those situations. So while it may be more crucial for some, for me it's nothing more than "it'd be nice."

I'd have utterly no need to have two lenses with near identical ranges.

The difference between ISO 3200 and ISO 25600 is three stops. ISO 25600 would not be acceptable on a large print for a wedding photographer, even on a MK3. IS would probably allow you to remain at ISO 3200.

I'm not saying you're wrong because every photographer's mileage will massively vary, and in your case you don't give a Toht :). My point is there *is* a large photography community out there that are like "wtf, two grand and STILL no IS?!".

Also, the MK3's high ISO performance (whilst awesome) is less than one stop over a leading APS-C sensor *at best*. Every little bit helps and personally I'd prefer to turn IS on than crack ISO away up.

WHAT WOULD I KNOW THOUGH. :(

Indeed, but to continue to point that out to someone who won't be affected by it is pointless, no? :D

I was debunking this:

Yes I was being deliberately facetious, can you not tell yet? :D

Just getting fed up of discussing the lens and hearing the exact same irrelevant whines "WAAH COST WAHH NO IS". Those things don't currently matter so why continue to whine on and on about it? I'll be the one getting it, not you guys :)

Sony's FF NEX is rumoured for early 2013 and I will be looking for a standard zoom. I'm so used to my 17-55 f/2.8 IS that I wouldn't want anything less, but I'm having to compromise at over twice the price which gives me so much HNNNNNGGGGG.

That's why MOFO.

Lots and lots of new Camera Nerd stuff to talk about.

First up, Canon:

Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 MK2 MTF figures - the sharpest and best Canon zoom made to date boasting higher MTF figures than the Canon 24mm TS-E II.
Canon EOS 7D firmware v2.0.3 - nothing massive in this one, minor bugs.
Canon EOS 6D rumours again - no flash or flip out screen, looks like a 5D Mk2 replacement.

Nikon:

Nikon D600, full frame 24 megapixel sensor - looks like it's happening, but the RRP is vastly more than rumoured making it only a bit cheaper than the D800's current price.

Pentax:

Pentax K-5 II - updated AF on the already rather good compact and fully sealed magnesium K-5.
Pentax K-5 IIs - same as the II but with AA filter on the sensor giving sharper images in theory. I don't see the point really.

Full details on the other products here.

Disappointingly no news of a K-3 which was rumoured to have a 24 MP sensor (same one used in the Nikon D3200 and Sony NEX-7).

Sony:

A shitload of new Sony stuff has been announced, full list here (including much anticipated NEX pancake zooms!).

Sony a99 - full frame SLT, 24 megapixel camera. Hands on preview here. I must admit I'm excited about what it brings to the table technically - full phase detection autofocus during video on a full-frame body? Very expensive though.
NEX-VG30 and NEX-VG900 - crop and full-frame handycams that will take a manner of alpha and e mount lenses along with converters for your favourite Canon glass.

...and you forgot to mention the possibility of a 46mp monster being tested in the field? For shame (even if it is only CR1). :)

This is FANTASTIC news.

http://www.canonrumors.com/2012/09/photokina-2012-samyang-10mm-f2-8-for-aps-c/

I whined about losing my Tokina for its 11mm f/2.8 for astro photography, but Samyang have gone and announced a rectilinear 10mm f/2.8 for APS-C, and it's a prime so I expect it'll be as super sharp as their other primes. No regrets getting the Canon now.

I will definitely be pre-ordering this little beaut.
