got the Olly OM-D at home atm, with an Ollly 12mm/f2 lens. Haven't had much chance to use it atm though :(

Any news on how you're getting on with the Olly? I love the look of it.

A good macro lens and a camera that has live view to allow critical pinpoint focussing would be most suitable.

I'm not into macro photography, but something like this?

http://www.wexphotographic.com/buy-canon-ef-100mm-f2-8-usm-macro-lens/p12862#details

You can also photograph people across the street being 100mm.

I have that lens, it's excellent. See the damselfly above for the type of shot you can get with it. Also the derpy deer. They're both taken with that macro lens. It's an excellent lens and can be bought for around £400 new.

I'd still wait for a review personally and see what it offers over the MK I version. If you're not getting more for your cash, get the MK I and go to NYC with the rest and indulge your photography. The MK I is still a very good lens.

It's going to have to be really fecking special to justify £2000 considering it's still not image stabilised.

Mmm I've seen people on t'inter (the usual fanboyish sites) lament the shitness of their mk1 70-200 f2.8L IS when the mk 2 came out. It's not instantly a shit lens just because there's a new version! My mk 1 version is probably my favouritest lens atm, it's frickin' fantastic.

A lot of these cameras are way over my head in skill levels. I am going to the states next year and want a camera to take with me. A compact camera will suit me I think and SLR or a Bridge Camera are too advanced for my needs. Do any of you know what the best make to look for at around the £250 mark would be? I want to pick something out a keep an eye out on HUKD for one you seem to get some good deals on there. I want one that is mainly point a click I am not big into Facebook so I dont need one that goes online at all.

I'm after a wide anle lens for just portrait stuff for my canon 1100d. Any ideas?

Currently in NY and realised as I'm using it that I need more in the frame for regular shots ( if that makes sense)

Lots of camera shops here but loads of lenses too

Cheers

Edit- just seen this (EF 50 mm f/1.8 II Lens) any good?

What focal length are you working with now?

The distortion of wide angles don't really suit portraits (imo) unless you're going for a dramatic effect.

Oh god G, I don't know, all I know is that my Sony handheld cybershot gets more of the foreground in the shot than the lenses I'm using, which are a18-55 and a 35-80

Yes, that's a great lens for the price.

Hum, I wouldn't think you would want to go wider than 18mm for portrait stuff. I use the 17-55 and it's pretty much perfect, in that there is near as dammit zero distortion at the wide end (and I rarely go anywhere near the wide end with portrait work). The cybershot will have inferior optics because it's a compact and they try to squeeze as much focal range in as possible. I'm surprised it goes wider than the APS-C equivalent of 18mm though, my old DSC-T7 (iirc) doesn't come close to 17mm on my 50D.

In that case a 50mm is no use here - can you clarify, you want more of the foreground in? If so you're looking at the Sigma 10-20mm, the Tokina 11-16mm or the Canon EF-S 10-22mm

Great lens yes, but from what I'm reading above he wants wider than his existing lenses give him.

The best way to explain it is like your peripheral vision when you look at something?

I have my cybershot with me too, and I'm finding I need to use it as well to get the shot, or am I doing something wrong with the camera settings

Although I have been playing with shutter speeds, and have got some nice shots, it's all trial and error at the end of the day

You know the turny bit on the lens that makes things bigger or smaller? Have you turned that?

I'm serious with this btw.

Ok let me explain, I was trying to get a decent shot of the roccafella building and I stood on the other side of the street and still couldn't get the full shot, but with my litte Sony I can get more of the shot, even to the point where I dont need the cross the other side of the street

Ok another way to explain it is if I turn the lens to get more of the shot in view, it's still not enough, so by telling you the lenses I do have, which do I need to to make it better?

I think I thought when you said "portrait" that you meant pictures of people but I think you actually meant the orientation of the camera (as in "not landscape", which has similar potential for confusion, thinking about it)? In which case you need to go wider than 18mm to get something like a skyscraper in from close range. Any of the lenses that G mentioned (that involve numbers smaller than 18) will help you out there.

Sorry for explaining it so badly, ha ha

Don't get a fisheye unless you want massive fisheye distortion.

The Sigma 10-20mm was my faithful companion for a long time and it served me very well for my New York photography. I sold it and upgraded to the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 so that I could do some astro photography, but it's since developed an issue which my replacement lens hasn't helped with so I'm finding it hard to recommend the Tokina just now grrrrr.
