Some decent test shots today with the Canon 70-200mm f/4 L and the NEX-7, all manually focussed.

Interesting, when I posted those shots I thought "hmmmm, I only applied a tiny amount of sharpening but they look oversharpned". Turns out the new Photoshop CS6 is automatically set to sharpen on downsizing and needs to be turned off.

Here they are again (minus the silly sharpening):

fwoooar smashing stuff :D

*lusts after NEX-7*

also, re that Olly Mr G: I had it in my hands Friday when I was returning the Pro-1. If possible, it's even worse ergonomically: buttons stuffed off in to wierd places and such. Didn't get to take any pics with it at the time though so I don't know if it's really an issue in use.

Well I'd prefer a mode dial on the NEX-7, I'm not fond of the slightly more faffy way via the rotary menu item on the back of the camera. It's not bad, but old habits from the DSLR world die hard. If you can borrow an NEX-7 to try, then it's definitely worth doing to make sure you're happy with the ergonomics. The menu system that they complain about in the reviews can indeed bit a bit of a pain if you need to go into the menus a lot, but to be fair once you've set the camera up then you rarely have to go back into them.

Another test shot (ever so slightly missed the focus here on the eyes of the bug).

All very good but... (!), I do wonder about the merits of using a 'full frame' lenses on a compact system. Why not just stick, say, a 7D on the back? I appreciate you might be testing etc etc and that Sony really needs to make some great glass for the NEX.

Fair points and challenges :), but my thinking for the NEX-7 is:

- a compact platform for "up the hills" and long walks

I've been up a few high hills here in Caledonia, and lugging the 7D and a couple of lenses (plus filters) really adds up weight wise so I want to hike with as little weight / bulk as possible.

- 24.3 megapixel sensor, 13.4 stops of dynamic range

I'm still waiting on my Tokina 11-16mm coming back from repair so I can do some landscapes, but the image quality at base ISO blows my 7D out of the water in terms of resolution and dynamic range / noise. The banding and noise on the 7D sensor is frustrating and any image manipulation makes it show. I wanted to tap into the new Sony Exmor technology without breaking the bank - I got this NEX-7 for less than £800. Also, see my earlier post detailing how close this sensor gets you to the D800 for a fraction of the cost.

- Metabones Canon EF to NEX-7 adapter

Canon L coupled with this sensor? Fuck please! The D800 and 5D MK3 are just so damn expensive for a serious amateur like me, so I'm saving a huge cost by using my old (... and very excellent) Canon glass instead of selling up and moving over to full-frame glass.

- a compact camera I can take on holiday and nights outs without compromising quality

The APS-C sized sensor gives me APS-C DSLR quality without compromise, but you're 100% correct about the missing lenses in the Sony lineup. There are a couple of options from Sigma that review very well indeed (19mm f/2.8 and 30mm f/2.8 primes), but Sony have the cart before the horse with their lacking lens lineup. However, there are big rumours circulating that the 16-50mm pancake and 11-18mm pancakes are going to be announced at Photokina.

The obligatory cat shot (NEX-7 with Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 @ f/2.8, ISO 400).

oh, in other news...had the NEX-7 in my hands again today. my mate has the 19mm Sigma in store now and I had a little play. Could be a teeeny bit faster on the AF imo, but it takes cracking sharp pics 0o He hinted I *may* be able to borrow it on Friday :D

Got it. It's dark. And glassy.

Can I be arsed to go to the coast at the weekend to try it out? We'll see.

Fuck it, I'm going to get one of these for my 20mm today. 72mm thread, annoying that the new 24-70 will be 82mm and I'd need to buy another one if it's good enough.
Buy a 82mm and then use a step-down ring to use it on the 20mm lens.

That would involve taking it back and swapping it and obviously paying more. I'm not really sure I can be arsed. :(

Doesn't stepping up/down filters alter things a bit though? Or is that just stepping up?
