Hey guys,

If I'm an absolute noob for photography, but interested in getting into it.. where would you recommend to start ?

I.e. What kit ? And is there anything you'd recommend to read ?

Basics only.. I don't want to walk before I can crawl and as my life is really busy at the moment, I'm wary of committing to an expensive hobby that I'll either (a) not have time for or (b) suck at :)

Any advice for taking nicer photos and how to do it would be sweet. I'm a big fan of natural shots I suppose.. landscapes and the like.

But literally, basics !

Cheers :)

What do you lot do with your RAW files .. do you keep them all .. or do your post production and then save them as jpeg or whatever and get rid of the RAW's

Cause their size it takes up so much space after a while at 10 mb a picture or whatever

KEEP, always keep.

This isn't the 90s anymore, HDD space isn't that hard to come by. Much more important to have old RAWs about to reprocess stuff when you've learnt more etc.

I keep RAW and 8 bit TIFF and a jpeg if used for a blog or Flickr post etc. I'm a ruthless editor so after 7 years I only have about 200 gb of material. One photo pal prints all his blog posts albeit small. Nice idea.

I find it very hard to bin stuff (unless it's obvious shite), I'm a hoarder but I'm also not a good enough of a photographer to get everything perfect first time so I tend to experiment with shots at the time and often way down the line. Some of my better shots have been shots that weren't obviously good ones until I processed them in something like silver efex.

That said, I tend to structure a folder with the top level name being something like "Glencoe 21.05.2011", then subfolders thus:

- Digital Negatives (all my RAWs from the session)
- TIFFs (8bit, uncompressed, full size, aRGB)
- JPEGs (various sizes for various things such as Flickr, converted to sRGB)

Import duty and VAT are separate things. Import duty is variable according to what the goods being imported are, and as of a couple of years ago digital cameras had a 0% duty, I've no idea why. VAT is fixed ar 20% of course for everything over a value of £20 so theoretically a £2500 camera could attract a £500 VAT bill. I thought that DigitalRev had different prices according to whether they would pay for your tax liability or not, but again that was a few years ago now when I was looking into using them.

Since April 2012, VAT is payable on imports of £15.01 (from outside the EU) (2.3 >> http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channels...rtyType=document&id=HMCE_CL_000014#P140_10548). The value is calculated not just by the value of the goods but includes any import duty charged (namely anything over £135 - some items will attract excise duty at a lower level). I suspect DigitalRev would have advantage of the prepaid VAT option as per 3.4 of the link...but time (and Wazzer) will tell.

What sort of photography do you want to do? Holiday snaps? People? Street / urban? Landscapes? Coast / seascapes?

You say you're an absolute noob, do you have a camera at all?

First impressions without use:

It's light. Lighter than expected.
It's small. Smaller than expected. Only marginally bigger than my 300D.
Body construction is excellent, you can tell it's really sturdy from touch alone. Nice tactile feel.
The LCD screen is BIG.
Button placement is quite different so will take a little while for me to get used to.

Once you get used to the button layout, you'll love it. It's almost the same as the 7D which is good news for me ergonomically.

CAN YOU HANDLE IT WAZZ?

One thing's for sure: I now need to go out and take more photos.

Itching for high quality lens now, lulz. Will be fiddling all evening and I might post some random guff shots with it later.
