If you're a true nerd like me, this is really worth a watch. You'll probably read a lot on forums over the next while about "low ISO pattern noise" (banding..) which Canon have never really got on top of. Sony sensors have addressed fixed pattern noise on their CMOS sensors and as such offer superior dynamic range at low ISO (could be interesting how the D800 stacks up against the 5D Mk3 given it's a good bit cheaper and will use a Sony derived sensor....).

Here's a question:

If you've not got much, or any full-frame glass and you're looking for that jump into the full-frame arena, would you consider the Nikon D800? £600 cheaper, higher resolution and probably the same dynamic range.

Looking good. I wish they had named the JPEG's a bit more intelligently but looking good all the way up to ISO 25600 in those samples. Nice, complicated scene as well rather than some wanky studio test subject. Give CR2's though!

At ISO 6400, there's nothing at all in it. I had a quick look at ISO 12,800 and I'd say the 5D Mk3 was maybe 2/3 of a stop better than the D800, but the D800's detail at ISO 100 is absolutely sensational, just awesome.

I don't see it that way.

The D800 looks more awesome by the day. £600 cheaper than the 5D Mk3 as well. If you didn't own either brand and were buying into a camera system for the first time.........

Amazon listing the D800 for a penny less than £2100. I can't see the 5D Mk3 being £3000 for long, so if you're in the market for one then give it a couple of months.

I got an email from DigitalRev today saying they have the 5d3 in stock. £2760ish with exchange rates, you might get hit with customs though. Although, having said that, I bought a few lenses (EF 70-200mm f2.8 IS and EF-S 10-22) and bits (battery grip for 50D, etc) from there a couple of years ago and didn't have to pay a penny when it arrived.

Ah yeah you're quite right. I think when you get to the checkout you have an option of either paying their surcharge or taking your chances with customs. I too my chances and fortunately it paid off.
