Could be tempted to pickup a second hand Mk2, or:

http://www.parkcameras.com/10025/Canon-EOS-5D-MK-II-Body.html

and:

http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-canon-ts-e-24mm-f3-5l-ii-lens/p1030488

I might chance my arm with the used market, I reckon we'll see quite a few Mk2 bodies around the £1250 mark shortly. There is also the option of:

http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-sony-alpha-nex-7-black-digital-camera-body/p1527077

24 megapixels, 13.5 stops of DR, pickup an EOS to Alpha mount adapter and that's a superb piece of compact, lightweight and portable landscape kit. Very impressed with the image quality out of that sensor (another Sony design, who else :) ).

I'd feel too much like Bodhi would be sitting on my shoulder being smug every time I used a Sony camera.

I mean who's heard of such nonsense!?

No getting away from how awesome Sony sensors are. They're really, really good.

All bow to Bodhi and swallow his Sony.

I was also thinking that even if Canon did do that rumoured 5dx with more MP and a lower price point even if I got a mk3 the price would hold well enough for me to sell that and have more than enough to buy the one that might suit me more...

It's no assumption, it's based on good old solid internet rumours with little substance!

I can only afford this upgrade due to some inheritance money from my grandad, otherwise there wouldn't be a hope in hell :D

Then you've got lenses. Good glass is not cheap, easily running into several thousand.

That's the problem with optics.

You can digitise the process to bring costs down, but not the actual capture itself.

It's all relative - a Phase One IQ180 medium format digital back on an Alpa camera with a couple of decent lenses is £40k or so (although you can pick up an used IQ180 for £18k+VAT: http://www.dtek.co.uk/phaseoneused.html). As used by Julian Calverley: http://www.juliancalverley.com/folio/landscapes/01/lightbox.htm. Here it is on a different camera/lens set-up: http://news.cnet.com/8301-30685_3-57335636-264/phase-one-iq180-80-megapixels-of-lavish-color/

Joe Cornish has one: http://www.onlandscape.co.uk/2012/03/iq180-first-three-months-impressions/ (see also http://www.withlandscapeinmind.com/)

How about:

D800 - £2500
Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 - £1200

£1600 change, more dynamic range, more megapixels. You could spend that change on a Zeiss prime and still have change! I think the Canon is just £LOL too much :(

Hmmm yeah.

Why must these decisions be so hard? Can't someone make it for me? :D

Well, I have the cash to move into full frame but I'm trying to save so won't be splurging. However if I was I'd buy the Nikon without even thinking twice about it. That's not saying anything negative about the Canon, it's just so expensive compared to what your money can get you, especially how much of a bargain the Mk2 is in comparison.

May have been said, but if you buy a D800, it'll need quality glass.

Landscape - 24-70 (mk1) and 70-200 f/4 (non-IS) and maybe a 50mm prime. Allow a wedge for a reasonable tripod/head.

I saw *something* *somewhere* (good source I know) that said that there are only a few lenses in Nikon's lineup that can actually, properly resolve 36mp.

... not to mention if you take guff photos all the kit in the world won't make a difference ;).

Absolutely on the lens front, top glass or it's a waste. As I say, I'd be waiting until the samples / reviews / blogs come out before spending a dime. There are already infancy woes for both camps coming out (not show stoppers), so give it some time to bed in.

Speaking of tripods, I'm finding my carbon fibre Manfrotto a charm.

Yeah I'm already sorted with a good enough tripod and head I think. It's not a world beater, but it is a perfectly decent Manfrotto jobby. I get a bizarre amount of pleasure from using it.
