But it's not an ISO of 23070946598432653294865 like the Canon so.... :D

Yeah, I saw that. If I was going FF that would be one of my first lenses I reckon. I can't do anything under 50mm atm (EF-S 10-22mm and EF-S 17-55mm). No IS though, but that's by no means a dealbreaker. Odd-sized filter thread, in that it's not 77mm like most of my other lenses. Worse, it's bigger than 77mm so vignetting could be an issue with current filters. Wide open at 70mm the aperture only needs to be a diameter of 25mm so no idea why it's such a mahoosive front element (other than it is a wide lens), they obviously have their reasons though. I'm no lens designer. :D

£2300, and it doesn't even have image stabilisation.

Some full-size JPEG samples from the 1D X have appeared. Nothing very high-ISO yet but the ISO 1600 in the second pic looks nice. I want some RAWs of some lovely low-light scenes to look at.

Also, I read somewhere that ~36mp RAW files from the D800 will weigh in at about 75mb. I thought 25mb was huge when I got my 50D!

Surely that'll be a good ~100 MB for an 8 bit TIFF? Woaft...

Aye, I want some RAWs of the 1DX to see how far Canon have come on in sensor design.

5D X
  • 45MP (With a pixel size similar to the power shot G1X)
  • 61 points AF (Similar to the 1DX but simpler)
  • 3.4 fps, 100-6400 (50-12800)
  • 1 Digic 5+ Digic 4
5D Mark III
  • 22MP
  • 61 points AF (Similar to the 1DX but simpler)
  • 6.9 fps, ISO 100-25600(50-51200)
  • 1 Digic 5+ Digic 4
  • Best HD video quality of any EOS camera
Both over $3k
Some sketchy rumours about a split in the 5D line. Also I saw that Canon will be refreshing a *lot* of their L lenses this year, could be in line for a lovely new high-mp body...

(based on those specs I'd probably still go for the 5D3 though)

I think it would make sense; there's clearly a split in those that want maximum megapixels and a reasonable ISO performance (thinking landscapers), and reasonable megapixels with superior high ISO with high FPS.

Also good to hear murmurings around revised L lenses, some of the Canon lenses could use a refresh (thinking the 50mm f/1.4 particularly).

Not me, that's for sure. Especially if it is available in March/April. I'm saving, but not that fast. :(

I've got too much investment in APS-C glass, I'd need to sell my Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 and Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 for full frame equivalents (my 50mm f/1.4 and 70-200mm f/4 are full frame compatible) which means:

- 5D Mk3, probably around £2300
- 24-70mm f/2.8 II (my 17-55 equivalent), £2000
- 16-35mm f/2.8 II (my 11-16 equivalent), £1150
- Total, £5450 to switch to full frame.

That's a lot of money just to have the latest stuff. My existing glass is awesome too, so I don't really see the point when I'm only a serious amateur.

I would keep the APS-C stuff as well, but like I said earlier in this thread somewhere, I have *nothing* <70mm in EF (except for the 50mm f1.4) so the EF 24-70mm f2.8L II would be an essential purchase I think for a decent walkaround lens. No way I can afford that as well as a new £2+k body, and I'm seriously lusting after that EF 200-400mm f4 with the built in 1.4x extender, and that's gonna be at least £5k. Gah, lottery win please.

Did you sell all your Pentax stuff G?

I've still got my K20D body (tough, robust, weather sealed little machine), a Sigma 10-20mm in Pentax mount and a Pentax M 50mm f/1.7 (a great wee manual focus that I got off ebay for about £40). My old man still has his Pentax kit, so I "share" a Sigma 100-300mm f/4 and a Pentax 10-17mm fisheye although he holds onto those.

I sold my Pentax flash, my Pentax 17-70mm (paid for the Canon mount Sigma 10-20mm) and my dad bought me out of the Sigma 100-300mm (for around £500 which paid for my Canon 70-200mm f/4). Eventually sold the c mount Sigma 10-20mm to fund the Tokina 11-16mm. I reckon I should punt the Pentax fisheye too.

Wouldn't need anything too zoomy but would want ideally, something that can go wide angle to somewhere over 60mm. To start. ;)

EF 24-70mm f2.8 II then. Or you could pick the mk1 up for a good price second hand probably once the mk2 launches.

Or the EF 24-105mm f/4.0L IS USM (probably about £1500 cheaper than the 24-70 II). You lose a stop on the aperture but it has IS and it was introduced in 2005 so probably not going to be refreshed just yet.

Much difference between the mkI and mkII? mkI seems to be about half the price or less...
