So anyhoo, the year's almost over and I've seen most of the films I'm gonna (maybe Ender's Game and The Counselor left to see), so what's the film of the year so far (may not be everything I've seen but its what I remember)?

After Earth 2/5. M. Night without a twist, but with weird Will Smith nepotism for his odd kid
Elysium 3/5. Disappointing. Massive plot holes but good world-building and Sharlto Copley is ace.
Oblivion 2/5. Also a bit stupid. Good that "proper" SF is getting made, but this was a bit dull.
Man Of Steel 3/5. Well I enjoyed it. Only got to watch it a couple of days ago and had low hopes, but it was a lot better than I expected.
Star Trek Into Darkness. 1/5 Whereas this has just pissed me off with every passing day since I watched it. As a standalone movie? Fine, 3/5, but as the trashing of a much loved franchise, you suck J.J. Abrams.
Jack Reacher 2/5. Generic.
Iron Man 3 3/5. Better than the second, still a bit overblown compared to the first. Liked the Mandarin twist though.
Fifth Estate 2/5. Watched it at the weekend. Good acting, dull direction and you can't make the internet look cool on screen.
World's End 4/5. Wasn't sure at first but loved it by the end.
This Is The End 4/5. Really didn't like it at all for the first 20 minutes but Danny McBride and douchebag James Franco really made it for me.
Despicable Me 2. 3/5 Nowhere near as good as the first one sadly
Monsters University 2/5. Even more nowhere near as good as the first one sadly.
Rush 5/5. Takes a few liberties but it works. Probably my favourite sports film and my film of the year.
Pacific Rim 4/5. Absolutely ridiculous but I don't care, loved it.
Olympus Has Fallen 2/5. Haven't seen the other Whitehouse film but this was a bit shit.
Kick-Ass 2 4/5. Really enjoyed it and its probably heresy but I slightly prefer it to the first one.
The Great Gatsby 2/5. I don't know why I was disappointed, I'm always disappointed when I watch Baz Luhrmann films.

Um, The Hobbit Part 2, Thor 2, Captain Phillips?

Really hated the film in LA where the world is ending, cannot even remember the name, switched it off, utter fucking trash.

No, it is one of the films in DaGaffer list with End in the title. Still cannot remember which one and cannot be arsed to go look it up.

Now You See Me is the film of the year for me. I thought it was great from start to finish and have watched it several times.

My mate would agree with you 100% but honestly I found Oblivion a bit boring :)

But I like loads of magic films that most of my friends hate. The Prestige being another.

Oblivion 4/5 visually stunning.

Into Darkness - as Gaffer really so disappointed after an enjoyable first movie.

Jack Reacher 4/5 apart from cruise being small ;) I thought it was decent enough.

After Earth 2/5 kept clock watching, that's never good.

Iron Man 3 3/5 better than 2 but after the avengers too much Tony Stark was annoying.

Despicable me 2 - 4/5 loved it but so does my daughter :p

Now you see me - 4/5 great popcorn movie

Fast 6 - 3/5 completely over the top, but it made me laugh.

Still to watch - Thor, Hobbit and Frozen

Man of Steel: 4/5 - I really liked this as an origin film some of the subtle moments despite make the film seem to drag were great.
Jack Reacher: 2/5 - Over hyped and no way he pulled off that part properly casting him hurt that film.
This Is The End 3/5 - Some very funny moments but it is a background film at best.
Now You See Me: 5/5 - Great action and effects and the twist got me I guessed differently through the whole film.
Fast 6: 2/5 - Let this franchise dies please. Military base with a 100 mile long runway and no air defense bleh.
Olympus Has Fallen: 3/5 - I like this at first but now it comes off as too serious and a bit dull.
White House down: 4/5 - Good film the right amount of comedy and action.
Kick Ass 2: 2.5/5 - It was OK at best yet another sequel that fails to live up to the original.
Pacific Rim: 3.5/5 - Good background action film that benefits from turning your brain off.
We're the Millers: 4.5/5 - Very funny and J Aniston as a stripper has cost me about 15% vision. Epic.
After Earth: 1/5 - Really boring. Will Smiths wooden character sucked and the shitty sons accent made me want to cunt punt him.
Oblivion: 2/5 - Boring and dull. Decent effects and looks good but was not for me.
Star Trek Into Darkness: 4/5 - Great again brilliant effects and Cummerbund played his character excellently.
Iron Man 3: 4/5 - Great action and a decent twist.
World's End: 3.5/5 - Very funny but could have been set in a comic book store and been just as funny the larger part of the plot was wasted.
Rush: 4.5/5 - Very very good. If I knew more about the sport this would easily be my favorite.

Forgot about the Hobbit but I'm actually not that bothered. I probably won't watch Thor at the cinema (nothing wrong with the first film but I'm getting more selective about superhero movies, there are too many of them). The missus has just mentioned Captain Phillips so I might watch that, but I have to be selective about what I go and see at the pictures.

Can't really say myself, maybe Pacific Rim just because of my inner 12 year old.

Haven't seen world end yet, and there's more to come ofcourse. Pain and gain was really good too.

Star Trek into darkness: I liked it, the franchise needed a reboot, followed on nicely from the 1st one 4/5
Pacific Rim: Stupid, full of bad science, full of plot holes, loved it. 5/5
The conjuring: Really good horror, best in years. 4/5
After Earth: Terrible from start to finish 1/5
Elysium: Not great but boosted by Sharlto Copley who is excellent in it. 3/5
Iron Man 3: Good end to the series 4/5
Kick Ass 2: Expected more but was pretty good 3/5
Olympus Has Fallen: I actually enjoyed it as a throw away action film 3/5
Oblivion: Again, I quite liked it, Cruise wasn't great but I liked the concept and Andrea Riseborough makes me hard 3/5
Jack Reacher: I couldn't follow it, it was that bad. The sort of film you don't bother pausing when you go for a piss 1/5
Fast and Furious 6: Was expecting it to be terrible but wasn't that bad 3/5
World War Z: Craaaaaaaaap 1/5
Lone Ranger: Entertaining enough 3/5
Pain and Gain: Not expecting much but really enjoyed it 4/5
The Iceman: Not too bad, nothing great 3/5
The Purge (Was that this year?) Crap, good idea, badly executed 2/5

Still a few films to come out though
12 years a slave
Insidious 2
Hobbit 2

Generic Hollywood movies galore and I don't think I've anything this year which I would vote as film of the year. However, there's no way I can answer this before Gravity is released here.

If I had to pick one it would be In the House.

Just about to watch Before Midnight. I caught the previous 2 movies on release and love them. I suspect this is about to become my movie of the year.

Watched it last night on the basis a few people on here rated it. Fun ride for the first hour but I found its conclusion morally repugnant.

Might as well join in with this (as much as my shit memory allows):

This Is the End - 8/10 - Wasn't expecting much, enjoyed it waaaay more than I thought I would. Tailed off a bit towards the end for me. Loved Emma Watson in it.
Now You See Me - 6/10 - Was hoping for more. Was okay.
The Great Gatsby - 5/10 - Went into this knowing nothing other than "Story about rich, eccentric American with Leo DiCaprio in it". It was alright, clock watched a couple of times. A slight case of style over substance for me.
World War Z - 6/10 - Heard loads of bad things about this so expectations were low. It was fine. Have read the book, but not even slightly precious about it.
Iron Man 3 - 5/10 - Was okay, but sums up Hollywood for me atm. Lazy with big booms. Is there such thing as too much RDJ? Have I reached it?
Star Trek Into Darkness - 7/10 - Eggs Benedict Cucumberbatch loaf was pretty good. A decent continuation of the franchise, just please fuck off with the lens flaring.
Fast & Furious 6 - 8/10 - Silly, but enjoyable. You know what you're getting and you get it. + the longest runway in the known Universe.
Oblivion - 6/10 - Expectations were low due to hearsay and I'm struggling with Tom Cruise recently. Was better than I expected.
Warm Bodies - 5/10 - Was hoping for more, enjoyable enough but not great.
Pain & Gain - 4/10 - Didn't know what it wanted to be. Worked best on a comedic level but it's a film based on the true story of kidnapping and torture. All the best bits are in the trailer.
Oz the Great and Powerful - 8/10 - Visually very good. Not sure Franco was right for the part of Oz though, but everything else was spot on.
Olympus Has Fallen - 6/10 - Silly, explosions, guns, bangs. Couldn't get over one big plot device though: 10 random people would not be taken into the safe room with POTUS, ffs! Annoyed me all film.
Europa Report - 7/10 - Other than Sharlto Copley being in it, I had no idea what to expect here. Low budget sci fi. Enjoyed it though.
Evil Dead - 4/10 - Didn't care who got killed, no empathy with the characters at all. Was rather bored.
The East - 5/10 - Not great, not terrible. Plain okay.
Mama - 8/10 - Nice and atmospheric, was good.
The Host - 5/10 - Bleh. If this film was a colour it would be beige. A weird love triangle thing was shoe-horned in there cos "there was one in twilight". Lifted from true shiteness by Saoirse Ronan, I'll watch her in anything. She's ace.
Trance - 6/10 - Thought it was cleverer than it was imo. Still, bonus points for shaven Rosario Dawson minge though
Parker - 7/10 - Jason Statham in a Jason Statham film with a Jason Statham plot in which Jason Statham speaks, punches, shoots and does jobs like Jason Statham does. It's a typical Jason Statham film btw.
The Last Stand - 7/10 - Arnie! Enjoyable enough if you can look beyond certain aspects of the "plot".
Broken City - 6/10 - Settled into mediocrity like most of Mark Wahlberg's stuff.
A Good Day to Die Hard - 3/10 - Stop the CPR and slap a DNR on the franchise, please. I found this quite painful to watch
Pawn - 6/10 - Surprisingly okay. Didn't leave much of an impression but wasn't bored during it.
The Package - 5/10 - Steve Austin and Dolph Lundgren... Shakespeare it aint. Alas it's not really particularly good at what it is mean to be.
500 MPH Storm - 2/10 - So bad it's... just plain bad. It's got Casper Van Dien from Starship Troopers though so that's, um, something.

That'll do. I went through the top 1000 films of 2013 sorted by MOVIEmeter rating (whatever that is) to see what I've seen. I'm sure there's more, but they were probably released theatrically at the end of last year.

People rag on Oblivion for a number of reasons.
Some call it another Scientology vehicle.
Some call it another T.Cruise vehicle.
Some call it shallow and boring.

I personally love it because of the backdrops and soundtrack. Sure, the plot is weak but it's visually amazing.
This still is one of the scenes that I really liked.
oblivion-trailer-2.jpg

Now watch this featurette to see how LITTLE CG composite there was for that scene.
