So much this :)

CMDR Ripeye situation update...

Total assets at approx 6million. All made from bounty hunting and kill missions.

Using a full A-rated viper with 4 gimballed cannons (actual cannons... Not multicannons) a chaff lancher, warrent scanner and shield cells.

Oh... And the union jack paint job.., obviously.

Elite condas go down without breaking a sweat now.

Yum yum yum.

If any of you newbies need a hand let me know.
If you do kill missions or bountys do you start getting factions? I'm not sure which faction to go for and don't want to go for something that's going to tie my options just yet.

What's the best way to set off. Trading to get a few credits together. Or missions?

Destroying any ship will negatively affect your reputation with the faction it belongs to.

Handing in bounties positivly affects your rep with the faction that issued the bounty. (Same for missions)

I am allied with the empire and all factions loyal to the empire due to my constant kill missions and bounty hunting.

I haven't really touched trading at all... I started out by doing whatever missions i could to get my starter ship upgraded a bit and then went bounty hunting at nav points.

The trading route is undoubtedly the most profitable once you get going. But even the thought of grinding trade routes bores me.

It's not grinding it's playing the markets :).

.... and a trader's view ;)

I have 1.9 million assets with just 31k made from bounties. I am gradually upgrading my cobra to a top spec at which point I will engage more freely in combat.

If you want to build up via trading you will need to focus on increasing cargo capacity and your jump range, probably moving from sidey to a hauler and upwards from there. When upgrading ships keep in mind you will want some cash reserves for buying cargo.

Combining missions together with sensible trading is something I don't find too boring at all. In fact, past few days I have traded on my son's account to get him into a Cobra with about 400k cash for trading, so that's twice I have done that.

Wow just managed to do my first couple of jumps. How do you find the space station you need to dump your cargo to once you come out of hyperspace.

If you go to your navigation tab once within a system all the stations are listed... target one and supercruise to it. As you do this watch the timer to target... it will start quite high but once you are nearing the target adjust your speed to keep that at around 8 seconds to avoid shooting right past. When you are within 1000 km you will see a 'safe disengage ready' message... at this point you can drop from supercruise ('c' on my binding) and you will be about 10 km from the station then request docking (larger stations within 10k is ok, but smaller outposts you need to be within 7.5k) and then dock!

Oki will give it a bash

For some reason voiceattack is taking my commands but doesn't activate some of the keyboard controls. For example I get it to do numpad for the 25% power and such. But if I say stop it says it does it but the x doesn't register is game. Nor does the u to change hard points

Any ideas?

I think I'm in the same boat as Moriath, just getting to grips.
Made the error of picking up some stuff outside a station, then it got me a 22k credit fine for having stolen goods. Bah.

I'm struggling to find missions as most stations only seem to have 1 or 2 that I can do which is tough.
Where/how do I pick up bounty hunting missions?
How do I find/get involved in faction stuff?

Limited missions at the start is normal. I tended to stick to "fed-ex" missions when I first started out. I just upgraded my cargo hold and delivered goods for the authorities until I had enough cash to upgrade the weapons on my side-winder to gimballed multi-cannons.

From there I headed over to sorbago where there was an imperial slave revolt and helped the Empire put it down by taking combat missions from the local imperial station.

Bounty missions Appear in the bulletin board and usual offer between 150k to 200k for destroying a pirate lord of some description. They are invariably elite and flying anacondas, so stay clear of them until you have a decent upgraded combat ship.

Your best course of action if you would like to pursue bounty hunting is this...

1 - Do whatever missions you can, delivery missions are easy and give good reward for the effort involved (upgrade your cargo rack if needed)
2 - Upgrade your weapons (Dual gimballed multicannons are good to begin with as they have low power and heat requirements
3 - Head to a policed system Nav Beacon and destroy "wanted targets"
4 - Eventually fit a K-warrant scanner
5 - Head to an Anarchy system and scan targets at the nav beacon for bounties. (the bounties in anarchy systems tend to be larger)
6 - Eventually fit an interdictor so you can pull wanted targets out of supercruise.

Getting involved in faction related content is related to the news stories. Keep an eye on the galnet stories to see which systems might be stirring up trouble. Also... simply completing missions will improve your rep with whoever gave you the mission, as will handing in bounties to the various authorities.

eventually you may see a mission pop up that is offered by a faction called "Imperial Naval liaison" or "Federal naval Liaison" these are the naval progression missions and will improve your Naval Rank.

If you are struggling to get started, add me in game and we can head to a system with a black market... ill drop you some gold or palladium and you can sell it to get going.

I've been doing some trade runs for 2k ish profit a time which is working out alright. Although I have a 23k fine to pay off at some point because I scooped someones silver when I was a noob and didn't realise I had to dock quickly!

I just had a bit of a mess up going to an ?extraction site, I found a 11k bounty and got them to 83% and shields down but then they seemed to get harder. I tried to boost out and escape but I think I got mass blocked by the giant planet that this asteroid field was near to as it took me 20mins real time to get past the planet and get any speed up.
I'm back at the station now and repaired up.

I wouldn't mind someone meeting up and watching me fight, my battles seem to be, fly behind someone, fire lasers, they go over me, back throttle to cut turning circle and pull up hard to get behind them again, fire a bit more. Accelerate to keep up. fire more, they zoom over my head and I repeat the pull-up cycle to try and keep them in my sights. Am I doing things totally wrong or is that about it? I dont have a throttle or decent thruster control yet so I appreciate I'm a bit handicapped there, although last battle I was straffing left and right as they charged towards me so I avoided lots/most of their fire, but the downside is that then its harder for me to aim. I seem to aim and be making 100 corrections but still only able to land one in 3-5 shots.
I quite want to upgrade to gimballed cannons or something because in the tutorial I got on with them a lot better.

Sounds about right to me.. I think it is hard at first until you get things like gimballed and missiles that start making it not so essential to line up your whole craft to hit the mob

Beware!

If you do not pay your fine off within 24h real time... it will turn into a bounty, and you will be wanted in the system that issued it (as well as all systems that share authority)

A lot of the time, when an npc ship looses it's shield it will divert power to weapons / engines and fight back hard.

Mass lock only affects your speed while in Supercruise. To accelerate, head away from the mass.

Sounds like you have the basics of combat already. Lateral and vertical thrust can help you keep on target as well as dodging shots. For example.. if your pulling up hard to try to keep an enemy in your sights and your "lagging" behind them slightly... some down thrust can help to "translate" you out of the turning circle a little bit.

Gimballed multicannons are a good first major purchase. just remember to keep enough cash back to cover insurance.

Yeah I read about the bounty thing, but there's no way I can get 25k so I have a tasty bounty sat on my head :( Am doing trade runs to work it off.
I updated to two gimballed cannons too.

Does anybody use Facetracknoir? I set it up and it tracks my face fine, but does nothing in game.
Do I need to change any key settings in game?

Check this guide. You've probably not downloaded the spreadsheet that includes E: D or something like that.

Played it for a long evening so far. Am kitting out my Cobra for exploration duties, something that really appeals to me.
The first couple of systems I did before figuring out the Discovery Scanner - just eyeballing every single planet and flying close enough for the auto detect to pick it up. Far, far easier now that I have a 500Ls discovery range to play with!

How did you get up to a cobra in one evening? Do you have the insurance money for it also?

Mercenary pre-order edition I think, it was waiting for me in a spaceport near the starting location.

Not looked into insurance yet, I thought it was automatic. Maybe I should!

Sorry, it's an Eagle :p
Phew eagle. Only one step up.. Lol. Yeah need to have enough in your credit left that if you blow up you can pay the amount due for the insurance or you go back to square one ship wise.

Starting sidey is 0 so maybe your eagle is too.
