Elite: Dangerous dev diary talks about plans for development
by Elisabeth Cardy on Dec 14th 2012 4:00PMSci-fi, Video, Game mechanics, News items, Dev Diaries0

Elite: Dangerous is about halfway to its Kickstarter goal with 21 days left, and it's indubitably time for another dev diary! Frontier Developments founder David Braben took to YouTube to talk about the long-term development plan for Elite: Dangerous.

The team has a handful of goals for the game. These aren't features that will be making it in for launch but instead are are being planned for now so that they integrate seamlessly and enhance the play experience. For example, landing on planets will eventually be a possibility, but not until those planets are stocked with flora, fauna, and sprawling cityscapes. There are also plans for players to experience the ships' interiors, to see incoming fire and lost cargo from the perspective of the ship's crew.

Skip below the cut to let Braben speak for himself.

[Thanks to intrepid explorer Mattias for the tip!]

I don't have much history with Elite. I played the original, circa 1985 on my dad's green monochrome Apple II, but frankly I didn't understand a bit of it and subsequently went back to Sundog and subLOGIC's fledgling wireframe Flight Simulator as a result.

By the time Elite II and Frontier: First Encounters shipped in the early to mid 1990s, I was already losing copious amounts of my adolescence to Wing Commander, Privateer, and X-Wing, all of them of course indebted to the space trading flight sim thing that David Braben and Ian Bell published a decade earlier. For all intents and purposes, then, I'm an Elite virgin despite a lifetime of playing nearly everything in the genre it inspired.

And if the Elite: Dangerous alpha client is an accurate barometer, gosh have I missed out.

This is starting to look genuinely good. Like really good. I don't think I've read a single bad preview so far.

If this is another X3:Rebirth abortion on release I think I'm going to be devastated.

You don't want to know how much I played FFE, the orbital mechanics and Newtonian physics made it for me.

Been getting those kicks out of Kerbal for the last year or so, that docking vid does look amazing though!

Got around to watching the docking vid. Dear god that looks dull, tedious and pointless.

Like the idea of using an Oculus Rift with it though.

Why can't they just stop milking people and just release a finished product? Goddamnit does it have to be so hard?

Err... No

It was funded via kick starter.

If you backed the kick starter you get access to alpha / beta depending on your reward tier.

Alpha testers git to provide input on game mechanics. Many were changed based on tester feedback.

Nothing at all has been said about buying ships...

Check out the latest screenshots - http://us2.campaign-archive1.com/?u=dcbf6b86b4b0c7d1c21b73b1e&id=f3f6656d39

I'm seriously considering forking out the £100 for the premium beta access since it also includes every future game expansion pack. It's almost a bargain :p
I've just done this and have been playing the game, omg, it seriously rocks! The premium beta at the moment gives you access to alpha 1 which includes 10 or so missions. Am so excited for May 30th to gain access to a lot more of the game.

Now I am going to have to buy the following:
