Watched a lot of support guides etc and i think i have some idea on my role. Thing is though about the ward and courier, should i do both? Or do you usually split that? Or maybe it depends on if I'm the only one who is support. Would also be cool to hear some fun ranged support hero names, Crystal Maiden looks pretty cool

Turns out when i saw i already owned the game on Steam and downloaded it, that it was just for viewing heh, got pretty fooled there :<

i find if you pick support you do get nagged about wards in pub games, that and buying and upgrading the courier..

That's because you should ;)

Support buys courier and upgrades it as soon as it's convinient(asap really). Nature of the role.

GEnerally though wards aren't that nagged about.

Usually you can't afford both, but if no one is buying wards/courier(as most people just wanna gear up in pub), then buying both will help your team more then your personal fast gear. I usually wait if someone buys a courier and every baby has left the base, if not i get a courier and then a bit later wards, or just buy them straight up.

Maiden is fun to play, just remember she's squishy and you need teammates(even if any hero -can- become a killer).

Support decisions usually come down to one question; does this benefit my team or me?

If it's me, then best to opt for other choice.

Oh and also i've been starting to use(coined?) the "han solo" rule when i play, and often tell it to others; don't get cocky kid.

You get a few kills, things are going great, "win in da bag son!". Then you and your friends get horribly murdered because you let your guard down just because you have 20 kills and 0 deaths.

Quick victory isn't something worth risking a loss over, just back away, regroup and strike again.

Also some people have started using a tactic where they say "Just end the game, we lost"(etc) and then use that to their advantage. Don't be that person ;)

Ive been a consistent supportplayer for like, forever. mostly since I can't farm for shit :)

Support might seem easy at first, but that's the name of the game with DoTA, there a million ways of doing things, and supportplay can be Very complex.

Do you need to support the lane, keep your farmer safe, harass? It'll def help your carry, but will leave you very lean and cheap. Can you afford doublestacking and pulling? You'll get more moneis and levels, can afford more words, get that manaboots, and MAY EVEN GET THE MECKA! Do you roam, gank the middle or toplane?

That's generally the choices you need to take in early game. All depends on what kind of support you like to play, whats the composition of the teams.

As a support, you got tremendous power to rule the early and middle phase, with your relatively powerful spells and movement.

Some supports scale MUCH better into the lategame. Shadow Demon is a perfect example. He's not only arguably the strongest earlygame support, defensively and aggresively, with disruption and 2nd skill; his ultimate is one of the best CC in the game, all throughout the lategame aswell. Literally all of his spells is relevant in the lategame.

Others, such as Crystal Maiden, is REDICUOUSLY powerful in the early game, and scale off the later you go. Her Frostbite WILL matter in lategame, as it stops blinks, but her magic damage will dramatically be made redundant after the 38-40 minute mark. It's important to make as much as you can early on, when you can SHRED through their supports and carries.

The most salient point to be made for the importance of supporters is that without good support, your carry can't farm. And without farm, your carry can't carry. I am a carry player, but without good support I achieve nothing in a game.

Anyone currently playing DOTA2 and interested in starting a team? We're currently three, possibly four, guys playing at a decent enough level but crucially looking to improve and play ranked when we have a stable 5 man, with a view to moving on to playing in amateur tournies etc later in the year. We're quite a broad range of experience level right now - one guy who played up to semi-pro level previously, one relatively new but well coached and rapidly improving player and then for me, I played in a couple of amateur tournies and I'm middling to average, looking to improve. Experience is handy, but willingness to learn and improve is most important.

We'd probably be looking at playing anything from 3-6 nights per week. Roles are pretty much TBC, the three of us are happy/comfortable playing almost any role right now so if you're a specialist in a particular role we can probably make it work.

Drop me a PM here or add me on steam: http://steamcommunity.com/id/mirieth

Am actually going to give this another try in a little while, might be able to stick to it this time.

Hell of a learning curve though? No idea where to start..

@eksdee It'd be interesting, but i just don't have the time to set away 3-6 nights for it right now. If you're in a desperate need of a support, give me a poke as it's like riding a bike for me ;)

Pick any hero you think looks cool, learn a bit in versus bot matches(ask stupid questions if need be, bot matches are for training not winning so don't be afraid to fail) and then when you're comfortable, join a real all pick match and go from there.

Visited dota for a while again, not liking the enw "if party member dc's you all get marked" thing. Luckily i can solo just fine :p

If someone has taken a few month break like me, prepare to open a sh*tton of presents.

Ah it's fine really, you get the occasional moron/insultmonkey/greek, but most the time it's just like playing with a regular party. And if you're smart about it, no one will ever know you f*cked up :D
